The Final Fantasy Thread

There is absolutely nothing on PS1 that can top Ocarina of Time.
Dude, c'mon. Even fans agree that Ocarina aged the worst out of the Zelda titles.

N64 had party games and platformers. Sony got the rest: survival horror, stealth, racing, FPS, JRPG, action RPG, and some okay fighting games and flight sims.

I'm not just talking about how how they stack up now, I'm talking about the impact they had at the time. Ocarina gets heralded at the game of that generation for a good reason, even if it doesn't hold up like that anymore (IMO it does).

I refer to my first time playing Mario 64 for a specific reason. I'm not what you would call a Mario "fan" although I do love many of the games. I had seen the screenshots of Mario 64 and it looked OK, and the N64 controller looked odd and I didn't really understand the analog stick.

However, as soon as I laid hands on that demo unit I practically had a religious experience. I immediately understood. Being able to truly move and jump around in a 3D world with analog movement just blew my mind. I knew right then and there that this was next level shit, and I had to have it. N64 ended up having a number of mind blowing games like that, and while PS1 had more games it just never hit those same peaks.

I dunno, I've never understood the boner so many people have for Majora's Mask. It's really not a well designed game. The atmosphere and story are great, probably among the best of any Zelda game, but the actual game itself is just "what if there was Ocarina, but once every hour (at most) you have to go back to the beginning and do the same tedious checklist over and over again before you're allowed to keep playing the game". If Ocarina aged poorly, Majora aged twice as badly.

Shouldn't we have terrible opinions about Final Fantasy?
"The After Years is actually not bad. As classic RPGs go, it's one of the best of its era if you consider that it was made in RPG Maker 2000."

Look, I get you love the game, I'm glad you do, but I'd rather play Street Fighter Ex than OoT.

N64 excelled at party games and platformers. Yes, it revolutionized those genres. Sony got the rest: survival horror, stealth, racing, FPS, JRPG, action RPG, and some okay fighting games and flight sims.
Bolding mine. This is really something that can't be understated. Early '97 had a complete dearth of RPGs for the next gen consoles, and while I wouldn't say it was FF7 as well as other (criminally underrated*) RPGs that more or less made the playstation the system that everybody wanted... It did play a huge part in it.

Hey, if it ain't your kinda game then it ain't your kinda game. Not everyone likes Zelda. But it was still a groundbreaking game even to this day. I'm not really an FPS guy, but I can still see how Goldeneye was a phenomenon back in it's day. It was a bombshell like Halo was when Xbox first came out.
You definitely have a point about the RPGs though. That was my favorite genre and N64 turned my balls blue there.

Well, I mean you had this:

Edit: I think one of the major reasons people get so down on the Zelda franchise is due to how many rabid fanboys think it's the be-all-end-all of action adventure games. The series is okay over all if a bit stale and formulaic, but it gets hyped as the best thing ever. This was a problem especially pre-32 bit console as any top-down action adventure game was simply considered a Zelda-clone and not given much attention because it wasn't a Zelda game.

I know you're trying to fuck with me, but I actually liked that game. The magic and combat systems in that game kicked ass, and I actually have a soft spot for RPGs like this and FF1 and FF3 that don't put all the story into the cutscenes and let you just go out and adventure.

I actually have a ton of good memories of renting this over the summer as a kid and then watching DBZ and Sailor Moon during the afternoon.

Was less trying to fuck with you and more just poking fun at the complete lack of RPGs on a system that was made by a company who's previous systems were known for some of the best RPGs of all time.

As the leadership gets old, they retreat into what's familiar. Everyone else kisses up to them in exchange for seniority, so nothing changes.

Back in the day, their design philosophy was great. But it's all they know and will ever know.

Team N64’s argument: that the n64 is famous for multiple groundbreaking titles is totally valid. Team Ps1’s point that the ps1 had more good games and better shovelware is right too
Games consoles are like slushies. They're all made of the same stuff: crushed ice, club soda, some Kool-Aid mix. And they're all equally delicious.

(but blue is the best)
