The Final Fantasy Thread

I think Tidus is easier to connect to because you learn about the world with him, as opposed to trying to figure out if Vaan is even relevant to a global conflict.
He's the worst fish out of water I've ever seen and hearing his shrill voice kills all of my interest in replaying X even though I really enjoyed it as a kid. My tolerance shitty voice acting is absolute zero at this point.
It's the epitome of a cash-grab prequel.

And spare me the thought of Zack fending off a platoon and gunships, like he's in a Rockstar game. In the original, he is shot with such speed that players are left reeling. What a bleak, unforgettable image that was.

That image really angers me because it reminds me of how little SE actually understands about FF7.

Seeing what happened with the FF7 """series""" makes me really glad that I asked for an N64 for Christmas back in the day, and I was a turbo FF fanboy during the SNES days.
When we were able to afford one in like 2000 my mom let me and my brother decide between an N64 and a PS1 and I'm happy I lost that argument and we got the PS1. Not even current year raping of one of my favorite games can change that. FF, Soul Blade, Soul Reaver, Ape Escape, Digimon and the list goes on.

I can also attest as a kid that PS1 had the superior shovelware as well. And fuck me them delicious demo discs.

Should I play this game? I have it on my Vita. Yes? No?

Eh, I got a PS1 later and have a lot of love for it. It certainly wasn't lacking for games. But N64 had the truly revolutionary stuff, the stuff that completely changed video games back in that day. Besides, the only time that there was an actual drought of games to play was the year leading up to the Gamecube, aside from that I always had something to play.

So Final Fantasies 1,2,3 do not have the bonus dungeons do they? 3 I would understand but 1 and 2 is a little souring. Never did Soul of Rebirth or the PSP dungeons.

Maybe so, but the majority of its library were turkeys.

At least the Gamecube had REmake + the worthwhile Dreamcast games. What did N64 have? Zelda, Mario. Doom 64. Pokémon Stadium, if I'm feeling generous.

The 3D action and platformer games were beyond what the PS1 was capable of, due in large part to the analog stick being standard from the start. I'm not even a huge Banjo Kazooie fan, but the games were a revelation in terms of 3D adventure games at the time. Mystical Ninja was the same way, and that game is the reason why the series has a cult following in the US.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were revolutionary games, and the Turok series absolutely blew any FPS on PS1 out of the water. Rogue Squadron was absolutely phenomenal, and Episode 1 Racer might be the only good thing to come out of Star Wars Episode 1.

You had Smash Bros, which needs no explanation. You had Mario Kart. You had your Pokemon games. N64 also had its own hidden gems like Shadowgate, Bomberman, Ogre Battle and even Castlevania which is criminally underrated.

Also, you can't just dismiss Mario and Zelda. They weren't just revolutionary for their time, they're also regular features on people's top ten lists to this very day. Playing that Mario 64 demo unit sealed the decision between PS1 and N64, and while I was really jealous of my friends getting to play FF7, nothing on PS1 ever made me regret that choice.

Well that's FF3 in the bag. I really dig it, and I think this 16 bit version is definitely the best way to play it. I ended up beating the final stretch on my first try, but I'm guessing that the issue people had with it isn't the difficulty per se, but that you have to do it all over if you fuck up. Which of course isn't an issue because of the auto saving. I nailed the final bosses to the wall though, which was satisfying.

n64 had, two zelda, Mario Kart 64, Paper Mario, harvest moon 64, two banjo Kazooies, Mario 64, Original Smash brothers, The only 3 good Mario Party Games, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, it had quite a few titles that generated major buzz while the gamecube was just weaksauce followups outside of Smash brothers and Thousand Year Door.

Gamecube sold way less than the n64 and for good reason.

Blast Corps, nigga!

Seriously, boot that shit up in an emulator and give it a go, it’s a cult classic

I love the remake because the ghost things that try to keep the plot going exactly as it's supposed to go are just the angry fans lol

N64 sold largely off the early year hype that people had for it when it first came out. By the time OoT came out, the rose was long fucking off the bloom in terms of fans realizing how bad the system was and you can make the case Smash Brothers and Mario Party and other N64 debut franchises REALLY didn't take off to be a huge big titted hit until the Game Cube era.

Gamecube was better than the N64 but by that time, the N4 had done severe enough damage to the Nintendo console reputation that it didn't sell as well as the N64, who's early success came before everyone realized what a huge fucking turd sandwich the system was.

You're talking sales and popularity though, which is an entirely different subject. No one is disputing that the PS1 was the more popular console or even that it had more games worth playing. My point is that the N64 had the tippity top tier games of that gen when you stack the cream of the N64 library against the cream of the PS1 library.

N64 was home to the majority of the truly groundbreaking games of that gen. There are a lot of games that I really like on PS1, but aside from FF7, MGS1 and maybe Resident Evil, there wasn't much that really ascended to those heights. There is absolutely nothing on PS1 that can top Ocarina of Time.
