The Final Fantasy Thread

That's literally all you've missed. Crisis Core is a mess of over explaining things that were better left alone. Gameplay is good.
Hey come on, Genesis and Angeal was totally necessary to add to the FF7 plot line. Didn't you see the secret ending in Dirge of Cerberus? Who doesn't want to know more about a character that is a blatant rip-off of the main villain?

More characters to give symbolism befitting other establish characters to. Like Angel Wings and Dove feathers (for a warrior).

speaking of FF6, you know who's an oddity in that game? Owzer. When I was little, I thought he had a big upturned nose, but that's supposed to be his mouth:

the Amano art is a mess:

But his sprite from the 2014 mobile version makes his face clear:

But uh, what is he? Is he a Hutt like from Star Wars? A frog man? There's no one else in the entire game that looks like him, so maybe he's just a grotesquely obese deformed human? Also, I never noticed he's just reclining in a big ol' beanbag chair. The details of his old sprite were a hard to make out in-game.
Wasn't Owzer a regular generic sprite when you first meet him? Did he balloon up after the Cataclysm?

Doubtful. They know that would result in fans burning down their offices.

For all the worry of cutting shit down, people forget FF7 is actually super fucking thin on content. Most of it's length comes from random battles and reading. There aren't many locations with a lot of time spent in them. Midgar is one of them, Junon is another, and that's really about it, unless you count the Highwind itself. Most of the cities you go to in 7 only really have you there for one or two plot points, not counting return trips.

Kalm just has the flashback, you stop by the chocobo ranch to get the materia, Costa Del Sol has you talking to Hojo sunning himself in a lab coat, corel has racial hate and another flash-back.

Even if they take the time to flesh these places out, there's not a lot, plotwise, you can do there, so it's not unthinkable to wrap up an entire disc and a half in a single game.
For the sake of agreeing with you, here's a list of every location you go to, the plot beat that happens there (with bold highlighting that it's a significant lengthy event).

  • Kalm - The flashback to the events of Nibelheim
  • Chocobo Ranch - Obtain chocobo lure materia
  • Mythril cave - Learn about what the turks are doing
  • Fort Condor - Nothing right now
  • Junon - Find out below town is upset for ruining the area, sneaking aboard the ship and encoutering Sephiroth
  • Costa Del Sol - A bunch of one off scenes where everyone can relax
  • Mt Corel* - Barret is getting pissy
  • Corel* - The town hates Barret
  • Gold Saucer* - Barret is super pissy and leaves on his own, Cait Sith forces himself into your party, everyone is apprehended and thrown into jail for the murder of Golden Saucer staff
  • Corel Prison* - Barret finds his thought to be dead friend, they fight over a little girl
  • Gold Saucer* - Cloud wins a race
    * Mt Corel, Corel, Gold Saucer and Corel prison all together would be significant
  • Gongaga - Backstory that doesn't make sense your first time through
  • Cosmo Canyon - Red XIII hates his dad, finds out what happened to him, no longer hates him
  • Nibelheim - The town isn't burned down and is weird
  • Mt Nibel - Literally nothing
  • Rocket Town - Cid explains his dreams, Cloud wants to steal a plane, multi-trillion dollar military corporation wants to steal the same plane, Cid joins as plane is shot down
  • Gold Saucer - Cloud recaps everyone on the journey so far, goes on a date, finds a traitor in the midst of the group
  • Temple of the Ancients - Cloud and Aerith learn a bit about the ancients, learn what Sephiroth's ultimate plan is, sacrifice Cait Sith, Cloud beats Aerith and gives Sephiroth the Black Materia
  • Gongaga - Literally nothing
  • Bone Village - Dig for treasure, pass through forest
  • Forgotten City* - Cloud finds Aerith, Sephiroth kills her, party mourns
    * it is significant, but it's not lengthy
  • Icicle Inn - Cloud steals a snowboard and gets chewed out by a Turk
  • Great Glacier - Literally nothing
  • Gaea's Cliff - Literally nothing
  • Northern Crater - Tifa worries about Cloud, Sephiroth shows Cloud some truth to Nibelheim, Cloud gives the real Sephiroth Black Materia to call Meteor
  • Junon - Barret and Tifa escape Shinra, Weapon is shown to be very deadly kaiju threats
  • Mideel - Tifa finds comatose Cloud, resolves to stay until he's better
  • Highwind - Party is determined to stop Shinra by stealing large materia
  • Mt Corel - Hop on the train and steal a big rock
  • Fort Condor - Defend a bird, bird is blown up by it's child, steal a big rock
  • Mideel - Weapon attacks, Cloud and Tifa learn the truth about Nibelheim and Cloud (my favorite track in the OST plays here and only here)
  • Junon - Cloud breaks into their underwater reactor to steal a big rock, gets dunked unless you got gold chocobo early to have Knights of the Round, steals a submarine
  • Rocket Town - Shinra is launching the rocket with one final big rock, Cloud and Cid steal it, Cid realizes his dream of going to space
  • Cosmo Canyon - Cloud hides his stolen big rocks, frail old man joins the party to bullshit discover what Aerith died doing and what needs to be done next
  • Forgotten City - Everyone finds out what Aerith died doing
  • Midgar - Shinra straps a cannon the city, kills a Weapon, Cloud air raids into the city to stop them firing more shells, last encounter with the Turks, Hojo is the father, Hojo dies
  • Northern Cave - Cloud faces off against Sephiroth

I dunno maybe he is related to this guy

I'm still wondering why Garland kidnaps Sarah and HER LUTE. You don't ransom a princess to steal a kingdom, it just doesn't work.

To teach gamers to quick-save early and often.

No, quicksave didn't exist back then, ff2 exists as torture for the vidya addicted in chinese reeducation camps

"Over explaining? But we have several spinoffs planned to explain stuff in FF7R" - Some guy in square
Literally just Nomura.

• Kingdom Hearts DDD was an entire video game dedicated to explaining how time travel functioned so that all the bad guys you spent the previous 10 years killing could come back.

• Birth By Sleep tried to explain how Kairi made it to Destiny Islands by Aqua placing a charm on her necklace: totally forgetting that he already explained in KH1 that Kairi made it to Destiny Islands because her pure heart was naturally drawn to the Keybearer (back when there was only one).

• Birth By Sleep also tried to explain that killing a person's Heartless and Nobody resurrects the original person, but the first person this rule applies to already breaks it by virtue of being resurrected into his old man body when the Heartless and Nobody Sora kills was from Terra's hijacked body.

• Union X tried to retroactively change the context of a scene in KH1 15 years prior by explaining that, when Riku stabbed Maleficent to unlock her power, she remembered that some dude said that that's how to time travel and ended up in - and I'm not joking when I describe this as such - a 'Sleeping Disney World of Data'.

• KH 0.2 dedicated a 10 minute cutscene to explain why Mickey Mouse was shirtless in KH1 but had a shirt again in Chain of Memories.

• There is a 15-20min scene in KH3 Re:Mind where all the bad guys stand around in a circle and establish who has come from the past, who is a clone, who is made of data, who is real, and who is on the sidelines to 'tag in' like an NBA team.

Nomura has this terminal illness where he will actually implode and die if he doesn't either establish that all characters had this wacky serendipitous history all along or if he doesn't convolute the simplest idea to the point where it just becomes impossible to digest.

I can almost guarantee you that Crisis Core: Reunion will have a secret extra cutscene that wasn't in the original game that directly ties to the FF7R storyline, and that Ever Crisis will try to re-frame the original Anthology to better fit what he wants to do with the FF7R story.

There are too many people in this thread that have enabled the death of Final Fantasy. I hate you.
16 doesn't look bad, and 7 Rebirth's open world needs to be shown.

the series is in a much better spot than 13,13-2, and Lightning Returns. I mean they had to cancel that big fucking Fabula Crytalis Lore Dump because it got too retarded for even Nomura. And you can make a pretty equal comparison because Type Zero was a PSP port on PS4 much like Crisis Core is. This also tied into a 3 Part story like 7R which is what the three 13 games was, and then 15 was the next mainline entry that was originally supposed to tie into it but then didn't, and 16 looks to be in a better spot than 15 was.

So it's like I can't complain. They've made improvements. You could maybe argue that they should scale back the big retarded world building and not feel the need to over explain everything by then adding OCs but the side quests relating to the OCs in 7R were pretty well done. The VR Simulator fights got rather intense.

Ya boi Yoshi P is leading the team on that one, and considering his work to not only fix FFXIV but also make it one of the best MMOs currently, I'm going to give the man way more leeway on this when deciding to purchase it or not. He's put in the effort to prove he does have some idea of how to respectfully handle his games.
Maybe he appears less is the side material? Yuffie and Vincent got their spinoff game, Cait Sith and Red XIII are pretty unique to an RPG and the 4 "initial" characters are pretty much the face of the game.
Cid appears in all of the compilation games, but he's almost always a supporting background character at most.

I like Dragon Quest.
