I hope it's hate crimes against elves.

If the ESRB actually rates for hate crimes then I pray I can look them up.

Yellow journalism, the article's about Brazil's rating system, and goes on to cite a translation from someone on Reddit. https://ghostarchive.org/archive/pRPWn https://kotaku.com/final-fantasy-16-mature-rating-sex-hate-crimes-drug-use-1849841663

and then there's this last bit, which might be the most quintessential example of how unprofessional gaming journalism is that I've ever seen. It's about as subtle as a shotgun:

The ESRB has no rating for FFXVI yet, nor does it specifically cover hate crimes:

SqueeEnix is so daring to put out all the edgy shit they already did in Xenogears 25 years ago lol

Here’s all the content FFXVI contains from the Brazilian website, translated.

-Weapon with violence
-Sex appeal
-violent act
-licit drug use
-description of violence
-sexual insinuation
-bodily injury
-foul language
-sexual content language
-veiled nudity
-presence of blood
-victim's suffering
-eroticization
-stigma / preconception
-intentional death
-nudity
-prostitution
-sexual intercourse
-hate crime
-rape
-suicide
-torture
-gratuitous violence / trivialization of violence

Personally I like the dark fantasy route they’re going for. That’s new for final fantasy. Some people are too sensitive.

chuu~

Actually I'm surprised the usual commentators didn't make a peep about Tactics Ogre: Reborn. That game's about ethnic cleansing.
Not nearly as big of a name as Final Fantasy, so I guess it's not worth writing propaganda over, because no normies care about Tactics Ogre.

I was hoping this for Versus XIII, but this I don't mind either. Took them long enough....

True, but Square Enix seems a bit more keen on proudly wearing those games as a badge of honor these days.

Before that, they were Cavia's talented but misshapen babies first and foremost.
The franchise has gone from Cavia, to Access Games, to Platinum Games, to ToyLogic. True, Cavia did make Drakengard 1, 2, and Nier, but they don’t OWN the franchise. Square Enix has always owned it, and can give it to any developer they want.

We would have had that shit earlier in Versus 13 if 14 hadnt bombed but yeah im digging it. Stranger of paradise was pretty good too.

Even Kingdom hearts got super edgy, The latest phone game straight up depicted Xehanort's start of darkness as experiencing a keyblade school shooting ... and it was AWESOME. Very Yoko Taro like.

Pick one.

Shitposting aside, FF has always been pretty dark, so I don't know why we're pretending this is a big deal.

To recap some highlights from the ones I've played recently enough to remember key, spoiler-free points:

1 has the entire world on the brink of collapse, including, but not limited to pirates owning a town, and entire race about to die of starvation.
4 opens with a warcrime, and is never afraid to talk about what that means.
6...everything. But seriously, invasive experiments driving people to insanity, mass poisonings, mind control, and that mid point twist.
7 contains genocide to the point of extinction, several rape attempts, attempted forced breeding, horrifying experiments, a couple of settlements getting destroyed, and seeing the aftermath thereof
9 has even more extinction, kidnapping, a whole shitton of mutilation, several WMDs, yet more genocide, and just non-stop existential nightmares
10 cements SE as being kind of obsessed with genociding peoples into extinction, but also has a lot of religious corruption
12 exists
13, as shit as it is, does try to talk about persecution for things beyond your control(hilariously making it a very good LGBT/racism allegory, but they're too stupid to see that), and invokes concentration camps very well.
14 is another contender for everything, because holy shit. Depression induced suicide, oodles of rape and torture, guilt fueled murder sprees, selling of children, and that's just off the top of my head.
15...fucked if I know, with how insane the narritive of that shit was.

And none of that is counting side games. Yes, 10, 12, 13, and 15 are worse at it than others, but let's not pretend this would be the first time FF talked about serious topics.

Well of course there’s always been dark elements in FF games. FFIX especially. FFXVI though is really going for “true” dark fantasy, probably close to Drakengard levels of dark fantasy. (Close to, because no dev has the balls to be as controversial as Drakengard.)
