The Final Fantasy Thread

It's this game

I think it's kind of started to branch off, but it does have it's roots, infact, the SaGa series (which is what the series those Final Fantasy Legends games actually are from) technically does have it's roots in FFII as well, but yeah, it's becoming a new franchise of it's own since the goal is to release a new game every year which can either turn out to be like Pokemon or like Call of Duty, I hope it's the former or by game a year they mean any Bravely Default game whether it be a spin off or the main series... only time will tell.

It's about fucking time someone starts this thread! I would have started it sooner but, you know, didn't want to looked biased or anything. Which I fucking am!

I'll second the motion about Tonberries being fucking assholes.

In all seriousness, VI is the best game. Hands down. It's completely open and nonlinear after about halfway into the game, and the evolution of the game (such as which characters are available) is up to the choices you make.

My first FF game was actually the first one, on NES. It's difficult in that format, the newer PS1/Colorswan version on Origins is much easier and plays more like IV-VI do when it comes to inventory. I still play this one from time to time, with a different party setup each time.

As for the newer/playstation generation of games, most have been pretty linear and, for me, not as interesting. I think XII is the best of the Playstation FF games. It plays fast and the graphics are quite good. Whoever thought up the idea of remaking X in HD for PS3 should be fucking fired.

Whoever said anything ill about VII, or has yet to do so and will, you can bring me my goddam fucking tea.

I only got into the Final Fantasy games in the past year or so, but I'll give my two cents.

I downloaded VI on a whim, and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I had some quibbles with how trivial it is to render the game utterly broken *cough Osmose cough*, but other than that I felt like it did what it did pretty well.

I dove into VII afterwards, but honestly, VII didn't do much for me. Maybe it was all the hype it gets, maybe it was the somewhat crash-happy PS1 emulator I was using it on, but I had issues getting into it. I can see why it's hailed as a revolutionary game, but coming into it some fifteen years after its release...it hasn't aged especially well, and there's a lot of games that have done the same sort of thing its done since. I did enjoy the battle system and some of the side characters, though, so it's not all bad. If they were to remake it (I know, it'll probably never happen), I'd probably give it another go.

Shortly afterwards, I swapped Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (what an awful game) for the infamous XIII, which I rather liked. I know it's been discussed to death in the earlier pages, so I won't exhaustively analyze it. I do think that part of the reason it got such a bad rap was because of how long it spent in development; when the final product was released, it couldn't live up to what people expected. I know it would have been divisive either way, but I don't think years of delay helped.

I did really like XIII-2, though. Aside from a ridiculously overpowered main villain, I feel like it managed to fix a lot of XIII's flaws; getting rid of the oppressive linearity, making characters likable from the start, and adding a few twists to the battle system to keep it interesting. The fact that you can put a funny hat on a Tonberry and keep it for a pet should sell the game just on that merit.

Also, III, IV, V, Tactics, and Lightning Returns are all on my game backlog.

I love the series. I've never played XI or XIII (or anything after XIII, although they're all--with the exception of XI and XIV--on my to-play list), but I've played all of the others. I didn't necessarily dislike any of the main series games, although VIII was probably my least favorite in terms of battle mechanics.

I enjoyed the sort of "Star Wars" vibe I got from XII, although Vaan was annoying as hell.

X and X-2 are some of my favorites, even if there are elements (such as some of the voice actors) that I dislike.

In terms of the storylines of IV and VII, I think you have to look at them in the context of when they were released. (The sequel to IV and Crisis Core are, coincidentally, some of the only FF games I haven't played. I had a copy of Advent Children since day one of its release, and, although it wasn't a good movie necessarily, it was still enjoyable. My sister klepto'd my copy, though. *sigh*)

Every FF game can be made too easy if you collect enough items, money and experience.

Let me clarify what I mean when I say creepy animu shit:

-Lolita stuff. From the top of my head I can think of Yuffie and Serah as being the best examples of this (Tho Yuffie didn't really had an old guy creeping on her, maybe Don Corneo)
-Pantie shots... :C
-Annoying as fuck kawaii uguu little girl characters (Seriously, fuck you Eiko)
-The subtle, underlying hate the games seem to have agaisnt homos and trans (O hai Stallone Justice Warrior)
-"I must become stronger, push my limits"
-Mopping, whinning emo characters who brood all the time and always say shit like "Oh I only feel alive in the heat of the battle" (Fuck you Squall)

Ugh, here we go. I had a feeling this would happen.

Don't get me started on Jon's review, if it can even be called that. "ERMAHGERD TEH GAEYM IS PLAYING ITSELF DURRR!!1" Yeah, well, get over it. Couldn't care less about Spoony, sorry. I wish all the blind haters could just sit back and try to immerse themselves in the game without acting like biased pricks. Trust me, it helps. That is, unless you REALLY think the characters are that one-dimensional. If so, you may as well stop playing.

"Yes you can avoid using autobattle but"
Please, no 'but's. If you know this, you shouldn't have to continue.

As I said, if you really want to know more, you're gonna have to suck it up and sit through the datalog entries and/or Episode Zero. It clears a LOT of stuff up. Lightning doesn't come off as a bitch because she wants to, and Vanille isn't all sunshine and rainbows. XIII isn't going to hold your hand in every single way (shocking, I know) and no, it does not automatically suck just because it's different. I do agree that it was lazy of them to do this, though. The brief flashbacks of the 13 days in-game hardly gave you a clue. But hey, if a game actually wants you to figure things out on your own for once, I say kudos.

If XIII was 2linear4u, I seriously encourage you to give Lightning Returns a try. You get a shit ton of freedom and lots of areas to explore. *gasp* Yes, I really did just say that!

Yes, it was linear.
No, it didn't explain things well.
Yes, the battles are all scripted.

We know. Nothing else needs to be said.

Phew. Sorry if I sound like a sperg right now, but I really am sick of seeing the same old arguments against XIII. You didn't like it? Fine, I understand. The game has its fair share of flaws, as does every game. But please stop trying to claim your opinions are facts. (Same could be said for literally every argument out there, lol.)

With that said, I hope we can avoid starting any flame wars and simply let opinions be opinions. /Rant
I know that feel. I have a friend who bitched about XIII but never played it.
"Did you play it?"
"No, but I saw Spoony's review."
"If you never played it, how would you know it's bad?"

Then he got angry because he can't give me a real answer. Stop quoting Spoony and get your own damn opinion.

For the record, I played XIII, I can bitch about the game all I want.

I...don't recall the FF game with the angsty janitor horses.

...actually, I would totally play that.

Honestly, Spoony's review was god awful. It felt so rushed and spiteful, even compared to his other stuff.

Spoony's reviews, whether they're meant to be taken as such or not, are not serious. There's no interest in actual criticism, and to assume that he's making a critique that's fair and honest is to miss the point. He gets paid to entertain people, that's what he's good at, and doing a sober review of a video game is boring.

I'm most likely the minority here who hates 8 and 13, but one thing I want to know about 13's sequels which I never played. Do the stories get any better? Reviews aside I have my own list of reason why I hated the story and most characters in 13, but I have heard mixed options on both characters and story with the sequels.

Objectively? Probably not

In the context of FF13's shitty plot? It can only get better.

One can only hope. Btw off topic, but good to see ya, been awhile since I've been on the forums.

First of all, you are NOT in the minority when it comes to hating 13, dude. Have you even read the thread?

As for your question, it all comes down to personal opinions. I know, cliche response is cliche. But I, for one, enjoy the mythos of 13 and find myself getting invested in the characters, so I can go along with the stories, plot holes and all. However, from what I can tell, you'll probably hate the sequels too. So yeah, stay away from them.

Reading the thread I only found a few posts actually hating it, most were neutral that I read on this thread, but that's how I view it. I'm not here to crucify anyone who likes it, we're allowed to like whatever we like.

Also thanks for giving an honest opinion on the sequels.

True, but the Vanish&Doom/X-Zone trick in FFVI could be pulled off fairly early on in the game.

It stops working on later enemies. I've never found Doom to be worth using.

I thought it worked on everything except Kefka?

As far as easy ways to break VI, I still prefer Osmose. Just grind the Auction House until Zoneseek comes up, and then teach all your characters Osmose and you can suck the MP out of everything that isn't undead - and those go down with a single Raise.
