The Final Fantasy Thread

  • This game is the equivalent to 'increasing font to increase page count'. Forced walking segments, roundabout paths. The fact that the sewers was its own chapter is an insult to the world.
  • Everything story related they added to the game was worthless. Not a single character or narrative change did a damn thing to enhance the story. Who the fuck is this triumvirate of Wall Market? Why do I care about this Choco Sam fool?
These are my biggest problems with the game, too. It has too much padding, and pointless new characters who aren't interesting, and slow down the plot.

Worst part to me that every major project Square does has similar issues. I don't understand why the stagger system is still here. Final Fantasy has never had well written side quests. Square has an obvious management issue when it comes to their projects and they keep infecting all their games with the same ass writing and design.

It reminds me a lot of FFXV's problems. Meaning, it wants to tell a grand story, but it cannot for the life of it actually get on with telling that story, or commit to what actually happens in that story.

To be fair, even the OG FF7 had problems like that, especially at the end, but yeah. It looks like they are once again making the same mistakes, and somehow making them even worse this time.

Oh no, you outed me in Supporters, that has never ever happened before and I feel so embarrassed.
Late news but you’re a huge faggot if this has “happened before.”
I just assumed you were a retard who needed to have their hand-held through everything but nah you were just obstinate because I offended you about Hilda in Fire Emblem. It’s not waifufagging to correctly get at the intent of storybeats, it’s waifufagging to idiotically deny it because it conflicts with how you ship Tifa or Zack. Which is what happened. It’s why @Michael Wade and @The Demon Pimp of Razgriz found any of that convincing (despite offering no concordant argument with it).

Which is the only reason this became “debatable” in the first place. And it has precedent in the fandom harassing the devs on twitter recently.
Remember who is who here:
Yeah. I’m the one doing that. Not the two people who contradict one another and didn’t even know about these quotes. It is me, not you, in a cycle of kneejerk disagreement.

The official FF7 twitter just posted this, and I just had the dumbest, yet horrifyingly possible thought ever. (archive)
The trailer just showed black feathers falling down during that scene, and it cut away before we could see who was above her. You could say this was just to avoid spoilers for the original game, but I just thought of something much worse.

You know who also has black feathers falling as their calling card, is a big enough dick to off Aerith, and is currently alive right now?

Fucking Genesis.

That is retarded as hell, but that's exactly why I'm now open to possibility of it actually happening because something that fucking stupid would be the exact route Square would take.
I unironically live for this shit.

I love deepground and im very fond of Genesis. Here's my only real problem with the concept. can the new english voice for Genesis sell it? He's not as good as the original Crisis core dub.

Okay okay what if instead of Genesis,
It’s FUCKING ANGELO
CMON SQUARE ENIX GO FULL RETARD
Edit: Whoops it’s Angeal, not Angelo
That's actually a bridge too far for me. Far as im concerned he's dead.
Alright yeah I'm done with FF7R. I won't say I hate the game but it does a lot of stuff I hate. I got to the end of chapter 18 and knew that I still had a mountain of worthless filler to go through. I'm just going to write a few things:

  • This game desperately needed the Ground Zeroes treatment. I get you can't fit the original game in a modern development standard but this was too much for too little. This would've been fine being a 15 game for $30 or something. Why do I think that?
  • This game is the equivalent to 'increasing font to increase page count'. Forced walking segments, roundabout paths. The fact that the sewers was its own chapter is an insult to the world.

  • Ghosts or whatever the fuck they are. I know about the twist at the end but if you want to change story beats just DO IT. You don't need some garbage alternate timeline nonsense.

I could keep going, but honestly I don't want to. At this point I want one of their composers to direct their next game because that's the only dope shit this game has to offer. I'm interested in Rebirth but if this game is any indication I'm only going to care about the OST.
I did not think the plot was bad but yeah it felt like MGS4 pacing wise. Long cutscenes, little to actually do in the city. It was very smart of them to make a movie to describe the plot of 1 in rebirth without having to play all of it. Endgame was bitching though.

Love it or hate it the plot operates under the fact that Sephiroth (or something that looks like him) and Aerith already know the story of the original. They cant make major changes without a third party pushing them back in line. So the whole game is essentially them nudging cloud into position where he can break the cycle and change fate.

The most confusing part of the story is sephiroth. He doenst act like the same person every time he shows up. My understanding is that the one at the Very end is a post ACC sephiroth and the ones before are a combo of /jenova/hallucinations/ something else.

As would I, and you know what? I just thought of something else.

Looking at the new designs side-by-side now, there's no way Vincent isn't actually Sephiroth's real dad in this continuity. Meaning, that's probably gonna come up, and be an absolute shitshow given the context of everything.

I will say that this does have the potential to be interesting if they actually acknowledge the elephant in the room which is Sephiroth's real mom being a terrible person. However, I doubt they actually will, and if they somehow do, they're probably just gonna use it to help push his redemption arc, or whatever bullshit.
It's ironic because Square's policy was always to swear up and down that Sephiroth was related to Hojo and Hojo alone. I dig the idea of him being the father though, They could have a sort of John redcorn thing going on or he was too self absorbed to do a DNA test.

The other major theory or assumption by fans was the Jenova was controlling sephiroth. And that's been a pretty major point of contention. I think the official story is she influenced him to a degree, but he eventually took full control and became insane on his own. Personally I like the idea that there's something else we missed, that happened in the background to cause him to become crazy.

I am unironically hyped for them to go nuts and do crazy shit. We'll always have the original.

Plot wise, I guess this is just how people see FF7. There's a definite divide in the fan base between those that enjoy the compilation and those that only like the OG itself (me). I knew I wouldn't get everything I wanted from the game. I'm fine with plot elements being changed but post-Enix autism has been a terrible thing IMO.

I guess my TLDR is that I wanted something more like the Resident Evil 4 remake. That definitely wasn't perfect but it expanded without going too far.

I think they'll probably go that route for FF9 whenever the hell that gets done.

I see 7 remake as a unique opportunity to build on the threads introduced in the compilation and make em pay off.

I have no faith in that regard. The only original project in the last decade that wasn't a narrative mess was Dragon Quest 11, and that was only because it was about as traditional as it could be. I know the FF14 expansions are good but ARR was boring. FF15 literally had its plot gutted and KH3 is a warcrime.

That's on top of all the other issues the game had. Like I said earlier with the route they're taking this game should've been a 15 hour Ground Zeroes-esque adventure that kept the Midgar plot tight and minimized the filler.

Or they could've outsourced this game to RGG and just turn it into Yakuza lol

That's what I was noticing, too, and my new stupid theory is that since multiple timelines are now a thing, there's just also other Sephiroths from other timelines running around in addition to everything else.
It's ironic because Square's policy was always to swear up and down that Sephiroth was related to Hojo and Hojo alone. I dig the idea of him being the father though, They could have a sort of John redcorn thing going on or he was too self absorbed to do a DNA test.
My thing is that even if Vincent is Sephiroth's real father, I just don't see a way it goes well if he tells him. At best, I just see him not caring, and/or not believing him, and at worst, he just goes even more apeshit, and things spiral further.

If they do go have it be so Vincent really is his dad, I just really, really hope they don't try to sidestep the fact that Lucrecia was an absolute dogshit person, and I don't want them to retcon that either. She is a horrible, stupid cunt, and I really want them to acknowledge that.

Honestly, I'm the same at this point.

For all its many, many faults, the Remake is not boring-at least when it's not being dragged down by padding, or new pointless characters. Really, that's why those issues bugged me so much. It's because they got in the way of this bizarre, and compelling fever dream of a story that I wanted to know more about.

For as batshit, and stupid as it is, I wanna see more, and more importantly, I want to know just what the fuck is going on.

Quick break before we continue the FF7 sperging: Some rumors say Strangers of Paradise will be available on PS+ in a couple days. If you havent played it id recommend it a lot, was much better than i thought it'd be
Stranger of Paradise is peak kino and you'd have to be the most "no fun allowed" faggot to really hate it.

Jack is still simultaneously the best FF hero and villain.

Also RE: The continued FF7 sperging

I like both. By which I mean the "remakes" and the original series.

That would be one of the most mind-blowingly stupid things they could do.

Fuck, they're going to do it, aren't they?
I see six possibilities here.
  1. Genesis kills Aerith, or tries to, but someone stops him.
  2. Sephiroth tries to kill Aerith like normal, but is stopped by Cloud/Zack/Aerith herself/etc, or even stupider, another Sephiroth from a different timeline.
  3. The original scene still plays out, but the actual cause of death is confirmed to be Cloud accidentally drowning her like that old popular fan theory suggests.
  4. Cloud himself accidentally kills Aerith while trying to save her, or on purpose because of some plot reason that has yet to be revealed.
  5. Aerith kills herself for the same unrevealed plot reason.
  6. It goes down the exact same way, and Square's just been fucking with us the entire time.

I think at most there's only two or just the one. Im of the theory that Someone else is pretending to be him in the fire, the holodeck and the final fight.

1702596596572.png
I know he looks like any other clone, but Im suspicious of how prominent they made him. Like it's someone else is watching through his eyes and he's putting on a sephiroth costume.

The supportive friendly sephiroth that shows up after the plate fall and the very end is the real one. Everything else is either random hallucinations, Jenova or undetermined

Agreed on Lucrecia. At the very best, she's a profoundly weak and cowardly woman. It would be the hypest shit if they actually went balls to the wall and made her a villain. Judging by Ever Crisis they are definitely setting her up for a return. Young sephiroth had a photo of her and was told she was Jenova, he showed it around hoping someone would know who she was.

My favorite weird shit is how the timeline even works. I think there's either two worlds or the FF7 gangs actions are influencing the timeline from the future.... or both.

I loved Stranger. I think my only problem with it was how it lacked new enemy's in the endgame and the DLC being essential, but otherwise it's great.
