The Final Fantasy Thread

Worst part of rebirth is all the soyfans ejaculating to it online and suddenly acting like it's an auteur avant-garde project rather than cookie-cutter basic storytelling to varying degrees of success.
That’s every Square Enix game.
Admittedly I did enjoy Rebirth a lot more than Remake. Probably because the rest of Disc 1 lends itself better to the expansion-for-its-own-sake content ethos than Midgar ever did.
Midgar felt like it was interrupting its own story a lot… with more story but not story we’d care about. When it should have slackened a lot outside of the OG story beats. While the rest of disc 1 is almost Dragon Quest-like with each place having its own little story alongside the main throughline.

Finished Final Fantasy V and I don't know any other explanation for why it isn't in most people's Top 5 outside the fact that they simply had never played it. I fucking love the job system. I still need to finish FFX-2.
Most people who've played it love it. It just gets absolutely no exposure because it's not a Le Nostalgia game like 6 and it's too old and primitive for people who got into the series with 10. You have to either be within a very narrow age window or a massive JRPG fan to give it a chance at all.

Im watching a playthrough of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth or whatever and I cannot get over Barrets goofy ass voice, I keep hoping hell ask for menthol cigarettes or something at some point.

Why are you not watching it in Japanese? Native language aside, the acting is better.

Wait what? The story may be bonkers and crazy but the acting from the English cast is phenomenal (except Caleb Pierce as Zack). Some rando NPCs sound wierd sometimes but every main character sounds great especially Barret, the man's storyline hits like a truck in Corel, and he could pull off crying and sobing in a realistic way that doesn't sound fake and actually makes you feel for him.

The Japanese voice cast is good too but come on dude, we got good actors in English this time let's enjoy them lol.

V is also too silly for some. There isn’t a lot of melodrama and there’s a lot more levity compared to other entries.
This is good because it makes it stand out and keeps the series from having an inflexible tone but means a certain mass of plebs will devalue it for being different.

FF9 long suffered a similar fate, partly for being too goofy, by the way. People objectively wanted things more like 7,8, or 10 so wouldn’t judge 9 on its merits (until it became the cool position to like FF9).

Pretty sure the meme was the main reason the game was ignored, at least in the west. Though it doesn't help the games afterwards are considered the peak of the series.
Sad but true.
Job system is peak in FFV thought. But variety in FF6 (esper system), FF7 (materia system) and even FF8 (junction system) with FFX (grid sphere tree system) are peak too.

It always makes me wonder what would've happened if Square brought every FF game over.

FF3 and FF5 were huge in Japan but Square considered them too complex and difficult for dumb amerikajin. Meanwhile they're over there playing Wizardry somehow unaware that we do have RPG autists in the states.

I just finished Final Fantasy 9 and I loved it. I forgot how slow the battle system was after being off the game for a couple of months and playing through a bulk of FF5 (which loads faster and has faster ATB bars) in the time between, but man I just love the cast of 9 so much. I think I like it as much as 10 which is my favorite but I need time to think about it. I might go back and play FF3 one of these days because I enjoy the job system so much, but that's for later (when the pixel remasters go on sale again because I'm not paying 17 bucks for an NES game).

RPGs were invented in the United States, and a lot of Final Fantasy 1 was shamelessly ripped off from D&D. Like to the point where they outright had a Beholder and they called it a Beholder and they changed it so they wouldn't get sued for just brazenly freebooting a monster.

But somehow Final Fantasy V was too complicated for us retarded Americans, so they developed Mystic Quest for us instead. After releasing Final Fantasy IV. 🤷 I'm stumped.

I've personally always believed that the reason for them skipping games had more to do with how much of a pain in the ass it probably was to localize RPGs compared to other games at the time. I can believe (for them) it probably was too complex and difficult (to localize and translate) for Americans.

It's kinda crazy how much Japan just rips shit (sorry, are inspired) when it comes to games between the mid 80's and late 90's. It's pretty noticeable with game soundtracks when you have the help of the internet.

Of course, I've heard that early Dungeons and Dragons ripped off Lovecraft wholesale at one point and got sent a C&D to change a bunch of books and stuff so I guess what goes around comes around.

Edit: Actually, maybe I shouldn't just say Japan. Dooms whole soundtrack pretty much ripped off everything at the time and I'm sure there's other western games that followed suit.

Everyone was stealing some design back in the day, we like to think that it was just asians and third worlders at the time, but the fact of the matter is, they never thought that people would care about their little games.

The voice cast is legit solid for the most part. Even yuffie was good which shocked me. Her character is the best she's ever been in the series. im actually really excited to see how her arc in Wutai goes.

Calaeb Pierce is pretty good for the quiet moments but the big problem I noticed with him is he's not good for high energy anger or emotionally righteous outbursts. I dont hate him, but if I could get a perfect AI replacement for at least one character it would be zack.

Sephiroth is unironically gay now.

It's hilarious going back over older comments after beating the game. Ordinarily Id agree with you but there was a WILD little bit of dialogue that im surprised no one has picked up on or memed.

Sephiroth has a line that basically all but implies he's (symbolically?) banging
The planet
And that her cries are of ecstasy and rapture. It was wild lol

you would think Cloud seeing Zack again would revoke a more stronger response but all we got was "oh, hi Zack!

speaking of Zack, from the clips i have seen, he dose fuck all the entire game. that must have been a let down for the fans.
The reason they did that was actually kinda awesome

Cloud's delusions get much worse in this then Canon. He remembers zack but his mind cant accept the full truth so he fills in the blanks and replaces a Shinra grunt that died drowning with him

But yeah Zack's arc takes a while to progress. I liked it, but it felt like they took the prologue for something like say KH2 and cut it up into tiny pieces for each chapter. He only really influences things towards the end.

So let me see if I have this straight. They gave the audience the impression that Aeris is clairvoyant, i.e. knows things that her original self wouldn't have known in part 1 (and I assume in this part), baited the audience with the idea that certain characters may actually survive (Zack Fair being a prime example) even though they didn't in the original, and they still choose to kill off Aeris...for what purpose? Because that activates her Holy materia? Ok, so you want to repeat what happened in the original, even though Sephiroth still survived? How are they supposed to resolve the story then?

Now That I got full context i actually want to gush about the ending for a bit.

Its basically a well executed Have your cake and eat it moment. Cloud manages to save Aeris but because Sephiroth fractured time she appears as dead to the party. (the multiverse shit isn't natural to FF7. It was all one timeline before sephiroth tried to go back. Basically the planet shattered itself like a mirror into pieces to prevent him from taking over. Sephiroth wants everything synced back up to one verse with himself winning.)

This has the consequence of making Cloud seem even more insane then usual to everyone that witnessed her death. They just saw her die and he's all peppy and nonchalant because he's seeing and talking to a live version of her in another verse. He's synced with multiple realties and seeing shit in the environment no one else can see. The reactions of Barret and Tifa to his derangement are priceless, they dont know what the fuck to do.

I just love the literally insane hopeful energy cloud brings that is contrasted with the crushing undercurrent of dread to come. The way I see it, even if he manages to save her somewhere else she might as well still be dead for him.
Does gackt appear in this game to have maximum level of if shitty FF7 content?
No! i was legit disappointed but you get to see a full version of loveless with Latin lyrics so that was cool.
