The Final Fantasy Thread

I point out that a "happy ending" makes sense marketing-wise in that it automatically implies a harem ending in the style of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Which people are still gooning over years later.

I would not be shocked if that is what ends up happening.

Hey now Sphere Break fucking owns aside from them mandating you use bad coins during the tournament. Fuck coin count echo.
Have to vehemently disagree as someone who has always struggled with math, but the coins being bad certainly didn't help. I actually managed to get to the final round one time by pure luck but Shinra stomped me.

I don't see why people have a stick up their ass about FF7 Remake. This was never going to be better than the original, but it does provide a different experience, one that's more modernized for better or for worse. I'm glad they're making changes to the story, characters and gameplay, otherwise why bother? We're only up to what, Aerith being killed in the Remake? If I want to experience the story, I can just fire up the original game and get the real deal right now. It's less about the remake being true to the original and more about what they're going to do with the rest of the story going forward. The more action based gameplay is also, in my opinion, better than the turn based one, although your mileage may vary.

That said, I do agree that some decisions have been...questionable. Much of the changes to the story also seem to be entirely centered around doing the most edgy and whacky thing possible because the players would totally not expect the devs to do that(First episode and second episode final Sepiroth fight, how Aerith dies, the whole Sepiroth clone subplot ect.). The episodic format itself is also hardly a decent way to release the games, it's like Square hasn't learned from Valve. If they couldn't do it at their peak, nobody can.

The way I see it, the FF7 remake should be treated similarly to a game like Pokemon ORAS, the remakes of Ruby and Sapphire. They add many new features and a new twist on the story and some locations, not to mention many more Pokemon and updated gaming mechanics. Does that mean that the original GBA titles are outdated and shouldn't be played? Not at all, the definitive game that takes place in that region would still be Emerald, not ORAS, despite the outdated mechanics, and that's why you should play both and treat each game on it's own merits: Despite both being similar, both have their pros and cons that make each worthwhile in their own way.

I might be behind on the discourse, but I only caught up to the new chapter right now.

To stress, I am fine with 90% of the changes made to Rebirth. They even fixed most of my complaints with the gameplay. Moments like the following kept me invested and entertained as hell:
My beef with the story is the last hour. I'm done sperging about it but it doesn't enhance or change the story in any meaningful way. It just feels like some George Lucas type cooming over his multiverse fanfic.

Fair enough, going back to ORAS it's biggest differentiation in the story is also in the last few hours (the postgame). I am not crazy about it and it doesn't really feel like something that would happen in the original title, but it's the gameplay that kept me going. Stupid shit happening isn't something I care that much about when I can just go back to the original, and even then ORAS is still much better than the likes of Sword/Shield or even XY. Similarly, this isn't the worst that FF has gotten either, I remember FF13 being stupider.

I want to see the world of FF7 in more detail, but I have to play a game that's not enjoyable in order to do so. Plus it's overpriced, and I have to wait an extremely long time to play the second part because I refuse to buy a PS5. And once it comes out on PC, I'll have to wait even longer because Square releases shit timed exclusively to Epic, and even when it finally does reach Steam, they'll most likely keep it at $70 even when PlayStation discs are down to like, $40. I might be able to pirate it, but there are no guarantees because they could just use Denuvo.

All of this trouble for a game I don't really like, but still want to keep an eye on because I liked the original Final Fantasy VII when I was a teeny tiny literal child. Pain in the ass, dude. This is like the most retarded shit ever.

I bought the steam version of FF7 (the original of course) and it's pretty optimized to modern hardware.

Finished all Pixel Remasters.
FF6 got all the atention in detail. Man, even the arragment version of Searching for Friends is probably the best one in the entire hexology.
Not really a surprise, it was the most popular of all pre-7 FFs due to when it released on the SNES being a sweet spot for nostalgia havers.

My theory is that
. If aerith somehow survives she won't be able to get together with cloud. Because they won't exist in the same timeline.

It's either that or what I said.

One is bittersweet and therefore "deep," the other attracts coomers. Tough call.

I've thought about picking it up, but I decided on a rule that I wouldn't buy straight ports/remasters of stuff that runs in emulation anyway. I no longer use any platforms that don't allow the easy installation of emulators.

Well, this port at least had better polished 3d models in general. CGI's are unchanged thought.

Can't believe im saying this but...Zack should've stayed dead. Mind you i was excited to see my boy Zack again, but after all this, he should have taken the bullet to the head. Fuck the whole multiverse thing in FF7, it only served to make shit unecessary convoluted. I personally feel if they hadnt added the multiverse angle, then the game would have been more enjoyable story wise.

I think it all really depends on the payoff. Part 3 will make or break it. Personally I do think his arc was dragged out but I've got faith in the team.

In other news intergrade is getting record sales on steam so that's pretty nice.

You know I remember bitching here about Tifa being the better narrative choice, but I thought they did a really classy job with Aerith and won me over.
???
Are you sure you’re not thinking of another argument? People had argued that I was stupid for thinking Aerith had feelings for Cloud (because they interpreted Zack being that kind of plot twist) but Rebirth has also killed that off. I even gloated about it but, alas, the Zackfags are poor sports and don’t seem to be posting here any longer.

Tifa has never been the better narrative choice in these optional scene situations. Mostly through bad timing.
In the OG, Remake, and Rebirth the timely narrative is locked onto Aerith because she’s the more important character (overall and in the specific moments where these scenes occur) so you get story/substance more out of Aerith’s scenes for that reason. They always carry a through-line while the Tifa scenes act more as a break from it. And in Rebirth it’s so overwhelming that I don’t see anyone really arguing otherwise anywhere. In the OG the devs put their thumb on the scale to make it likely you’ll get Aerith’s scene. Leaving Remake as the only entry where it’s even a little debatable (but still Aerith’s scene fits better with what’s going on in the story at that time, and seeds the new plot elements by having her presage her own tragedy).

I was the one bitching lol Id still want Zack to win out but the whole scene with him and marline sold me on why aerith wants to be with cloud.
