The Final Fantasy Thread

Back when Matsuno was on board, his original version had it that you could learn every skill. He left Square during development and they released International Version (oddly enough, it did not have a International release) which locks you into a specific job because one of the designers thought you shouldn't max out everything.
Meanwhile one of the complaints about FF12 when it came out was that every character felt samey since they could all unlock everything.

I don't know, I think that whole system was doomed from the start.

I think this is my favorite Uematsu track. A spooky tune to get you into the right mood at the start of the game. Narshe Mines is pretty much perfect.

Balthier is clearly the *actual* main character of FF12. And to a slightly lesser extent, so is Ashe. Shit, so is Basch. That is literally half of the main cast who have a greater claim at being the main character
It does a good job of getting you invested in Reks' and Vaan's story.

Then he gets sidelined, which hurt the story a lot.

I don't really think much of Balthier. Balthier claims he is the best character and fans mostly go along with it. He is not a very interesting character and has no motive. Everything is instigated by his father, which feels like a contrivance.

Why are mobile games such trash? These days, phones have insane processors that can run Dreamcast games in an instant.

I'd rather play a hacked PSP, simply because here are better crafted games on those platforms.
Because everybody has them, so they need to dumb it down to the lowest common denominator.

When compared to the rest of Ivalice, FFXII is definitely is the weakest link in terms of gameplay systems. I also blame the fact how its world was not as glamorous or wondrous as it was hyped up to be as told in the rest of the games. I get that it's all on a timeline, and obviously you would need ages of war to develop job classes, but this was just as handled poorly.

tl;dr there is definitely an emphasis on story over substance in FFXII. Everything feels like it was trying to be Star Wars than Final Fantasy in XII. Golden Age? Who cares! Let's go full fedora and retell Star Wars and subvert expectations.

Kinda not surprised Matsuno left, he excelled in the grimdark and edge but he couldn't cut the mustard for wonder and grandeur.

They could have just made you do the canon game first and then let you do the Lunar Ruins stuff on New Game + or something.

The Lunar Ruins are actually pretty damn good
Fuck the Lunar Ruins, give us Live-A-Live

That FF fans are big proponents of tell, don’t show is no great shock

They can’t just lock a guy in the cupboard and bang it all out like they did with recreating the FF8 source code?
So you want another FF8 debacle, that's what you're saying.
