Daily reminder that X-2 was what it was because The Spirit Within damn near bankrupted Square and X-2 was created as a literally soulless cash grab with lots of sexual fan service explicitly to make a quick buck.
The only thing I liked about that firm was that the main character was hit and voiced by Ming-Na Wen. That was it. Everything else was boring as hell and had nothing to do with Final Fantasy.
With the exception of Advent Children, Square’s films were just not worth seeing or making since they lose them hundreds of millions of dollars, particularly Kingsglaive, and Square Enix’s stupid attempts to make both Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XV their own universes.
I loved Kingsglaive. legit good movie, and it looks ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. The problem was it was so different (and better) then the game thematically it might as well not have existed. For example Luna looks and acts nothing like her game counterpart, (who has the personality of a block of wood) and the empire is given WAY more characterization then it ever was in 15.
Evidently there were also a lot of behind the scenes changes. Noctis and his crew were supposed to have a much bigger role, outright replacing Nyx instead of being a ending cameo, if early posters can be believed. Essentially the rather sudden story cuts were reflected in the movie.
That's interesting, but not really surprising. The radical change in tone was a huge factor in why I felt that it was inferior as a sequel to the original game. Poor Yuna went through a huge amount of trauma in FFX that was only barely reflected in FFX-2.
For example, she spent hours of emotionally draining prayer just getting each of those aeons, to say nothing of the growing attachment to them as she develops their abilities and calls upon them constantly through the quest. Then at the end, she has to permanently kill each and every one of them as they beg for death (seriously, look at the scan info for the aeons in that fight; instead of the usual blurb about weaknesses and such, it's things like "Strike me down.", "Extinguish me.", "Take my life.", "End it here.", "Soon... Eternal rest."). It's like having to shoot Old Yeller half a dozen times in a row. She has to oppose and be cast out of the religion she believed in her whole life when she learns the whole thing was a lie, and kills some of its most important and revered figures. The success of her quest results in both her boyfriend and her respected sempai (both of whom are the last living links to her dead father) ceasing to exist, and again, she has to dispatch poor Auron in person. Then there are things like having to witness the mass death and destruction at Kilika, or knowing that the Ronso were slaughtered by Seymour and it wouldn't have happened if she had stayed with him. To say nothing of the constant life-or-death violence that any Final Fantasy character will experience from the countless random encounters throughout the game.
She should be nearly a basket case, Rambo from First Blood with a summoner's staff. Instead she somehow becomes a happy-go-lucky pop idol and treasure hunter. It's ridiculous; no wonder the original writer didn't like it!
Also, I liked the original combat system, and even the Sphere Grid, as wacky and nonsensical as it was. Between the new tone, new combat, and new advancement, they removed all three of the things I liked most about the original game. I'm still not sure how I didn't end up not hating it. (The return of the job system was a good thing, though.)

It was jarring at first but it's basically revealed, IIRC (correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a while), that she's basically doing that to cope and isn't actually happy-go-lucky at all.

Yuna's development in FFX-2 is pretty much how I envision she should end up as sans the world peace through J-pop shit in chapter 4 or what they did to Rikku. Someone who may have some angsty bouts about her adventure in the first game, but also someone who is determined to move on to a brighter future. And its pretty much reflected in the main plot threat of Vegnagun and the Temple fiends revealing themselves as the potential to be as destructive as Sin and ending the eternal calm which Yuna is very upset about. Also, her being the sphere hunter shit is just an convenient excuse for her to find more information on not-Tidus and her desperation to get back what she lost in the first game. Yuna becoming a barely functioning depressive wreck or PTSD psycho sounds pretty lame and betrays the morals and convictions she wants to role model herself in the first game about hope, love, and happiness for Spira. Seeing her still hold onto this so strongly to the point people (like Paine) are concerned she over-exerting herself is great to see realized in that game.
And best ending is normal ending.
Also iirc, the original writer wrote FFX-2.5 novels where Yuna regresses to her starting character and the ending results in Sin returns to life for FFX-3. Gosh, what a wonderful alternative to Yuna's character and future tribulations.

The FFX 2.5 novels may be some of the best worst fiction in FF history. Some of the story concepts are interesting, but what the hell were they smoking when they killed off Tidus with beachball shaped claymore mines?
Yuna didn't just decide to become bubbly and carefree in X-2, it's mostly a coping mechanism for everything she went through. There are several moments in the game where her inner narration clearly expresses how she's actually feeling, and it eventually culminates in the infamous "I don't like your plan. It sucks," scene. Yes, she's more outgoing and there's some definite mood whiplash, but she's still the same Yuna deep down. She's just trying to push past the pain of losing her loved ones. I get not liking the tonal shift, but Yuna's character development in X-2 is pretty solid.

I was in utter disbelief when I first read a summary of the novels, it's quite literally fanfiction-tier writing that undoes the entire point of everything. Knowing that they and the audio drama bombed super hard is a small comfort at least.

I'm of the Yoko Taro school of thought that every RPG needs a fishing minigame. It is only ever an improvement.
Why would they even bother? The debut trailer actually showed gameplay and some in-game cutscenes and faggots who think Final Fantasy is strictly awkward dialogue, futuristic settings, impossibly beautiful pre-rendered cutscenes and Nomura-belts ripped them apart.
It's so blatant and shitty that I almost respect it more as a result.
It's about dodging around the media bloodhounds. You have Tifa's default model and outfit slimmed down in the tit department and make a bit of a stink about how you're going to keep the sexualization toned down and all the dangerhairs and troons count it as a win and leave the game alone. They aren't going to actually play it so when you get a few hours in and she's in a kinky outfit later you get to have your cake and eat it too.
Reminds me of how in Kirby Super Star’s remake, that one floating head boss got changed to look less like black face, only for there to be a stronger variation of him that did have black face in the Arena modes.
That doesn't explain why the "dangerhairs" didn't whine about Nier Automata. Hek, I didn't hear a peep regarding Lady Dimitrescu from RE8. I didn't even hear a peep about that game lacking "diversity" either.
I distinctly remember plenty of whining about 2B's sexualization. But the point is that Tifa and 2B are on different scales of importance and popularity. Media was gonna smack Square hard for her if they kept her bust faithful.

The media was gonna smack Square regardless, because that's just what the media does now. Square had two choices: pussy out like a bitch, or ignore the haters because they ain't buying this game no way. It did the former.

I'm not saying they should have pussied out, just explaining why I think they did. I think Tifa's tommyknockers should have been made even bigger, flabbier, more veins even. I don't give a fuck. I just figure that's why Square went through the trouble of giving her tits the chop.
The juxtaposition between her enormous impractical tits and her kung fu moves would have been hilarious. Almost as hilarious as the articles about how boobs don't work that way and nobody with that kind of figure can kick ass. HAHAHA WE KNOW BITCHES BUT THIS IS WHAT WE WANT.
It's super impressive what they've been able to acomplish on FF7. I saw some pretty badass mods for ff9 too.

The coolest thing I think Square did with Kingsglaive is they actually recreated the Lucius Audi R8 V10 and sold it as a real car with its cool fleur vinyl pattern and custom floral wheels. The wheel design is exquisite.

what kills me is that's like 12 hours in whatever modeling program is used to make rims, plus a car with a few more cheapo modifications for 300% markup, baby
and yet if you have enormous balls you can sell that as a videogame car and make up a percentage of development costs on your way-outta-pocket backstreet boys simulator

That's probably true. I bet you could get a boutique wheel maker like HRE to fab up a custom design like the ones on the Lucius R8 and still be under the total cost for what Square sold this one for. I met the owner of HRE and they'll definitely take up a job like that. Custom vinyl is also nothing when compared to msrp of a R8 V10. An extra 20k for wheels and 10k here and there is super cheap if you really want to make your own Star of Lucius.
