The Final Fantasy Thread

If that's the case then what's the best way to experience most of them?
@Pissmaster is right on the money. The GBA versions are the best for most of these. They just slightly upgrade the graphics in some areas, fix some old translation errors & technical bugs, and add new content. It's worth looking to see if there's some kind of cleaned up fan version of the GBA versions of 1-6.

Or you could just pirate the Pixel Perfect remakes and use the guide here (https://www.rpgsite.net/feature/115...-the-final-fantasy-pixel-remaster-games-on-pc) to replace it with your preferred font (I'd go for the FF6 one).

The pixel remakes are pretty stupid. SquareEnix is holding the older versions hostage so people will have to buy these new versions. Just screw the customers over for easier money, that's nothing new in the industry. If you really want them I would only recommend 3 and 6. 3 because it's nice to finally have a new remake, and they actually spent more time on 6 and, other than the lack of bonus content, is a pretty kickass remake.

1. GBA (Dawn of Souls)
2. GBA (Dawn of Souls)
The GBA versions made them both a lot easier. FF; Origins on PSX is a 1:1 reproduction of game mechanics except you can turn on auto-targeting so your characters don't beat up monsters that are already dead. This includes your stats going down in FF2 (spirit gain can decrease strength, strength gain can decrease intelligence, intelligence gain can decrease vitality.)

If you want the full "experience" then definitely play the PSX version.

Wow they actually explained where the black materia came from in a satisfying and interesting way. Im digging the lore. Its a little early to call it at chapter 10 but this is shaping up to be the best written Nomura game.

Also if im reading the implications right, I really dig what the Whispers "actually" are.

The expanded nibelheim was darkly hilarious.

a final revengence style duel
That would be a hell of a lot better than what we got in the OG where Cloud just nails his final form with an Ultima Weapon Omnislash for 9999 every blow and that's it for him.

Standing here... I realize...
You are not like me, trying to end history.

That song may not quite be on the level of Guile's Theme, but its close.

Personally I love the shit out of the og ending but yeah sephiroth blocked that move twice so that's not going to happen again.

Also whoever decided you can have a date with sith cid and Vincent deserves a raise.

I like them because now the older games are finally on modern platforms. 1 and 2 previously weren’t available at all, 3 and 4 had weird weird 3d ds graphics. (and I’m not a graphics whore, but it did not look good at all) and the pc ports of 5 and 6 were just botched. I do think they should’ve kept in the bonus content though. Like 2 was just completely missing soul of rebirth.

So I finished Rebirth. FF7 Remake and Rebirth are probably the best games Square Enix has published in the past couple decades. Unlike 13, 15 and 16 (I finished all of them) the remakes don't have the same trainwreck qualities to them, despite the idiotic story additions. These remakes are exactly how the delusional creators wanted, whereas previous Final Fantasies have never come out feeling fully developed. For example, I've rarely seen people criticize FF16 for its story, but it was worse than 13 and 15 in that respect, and nowhere close to as good as the FF7 remakes. If you haven't played FF16, it starts out as a dark fantasy Game of Thrones kind of setting, but gives up after 6 hours and slowly transforms into Power Rangers. All the factions and the characters, including the main love interest, are gradually faded out and forgotten as it simplifies and boils down to big monsters punching each other. Half the side missions are worthless filler, and it's often surprisingly ugly looking, despite being a PS5 exclusive. It's more like Devil May Cry than people expected, as it has a similar level of depth and thought put into it as Devil May Cry 5. Final Fantasy 13 has a fairly good story, but told in the wrong order, so half the game you barely understand what's going on. And 15 is a joke, but likable because of its high ambition. It's a bug fixed alpha version. The FF7 Remakes on the other hand finally match the level of quality Square was putting out in the PS2 era. I enjoyed it a lot. It's a bit like a 200 episode anime adaption with filler arcs. Yes, it's not as tight as the original, but this is still pretty unbelievable as a modern game. Like in Remake, every event from the original is elevated and and produced as lavishly as Square could manage. Everything goes on for a bit too long. But it's not for lack of effort or money. They're taking everything too far, and I don't mind the madness. I'm very much looking forward to part 3.

So it's fucking awesome?
You'll probably enjoy it! All the big monster fights are very good. The open field content is mid, and the credits say parts of the game was outsourced to Platinum Games. Those sections feel like Nier Automata's open areas. Get through them as fast as you can so you can enjoy the actual good stuff which is the big monster fights.

So, according to the comments, Gus apparently threatened to make the girls pay their debts to him with sex slavery if Cloud didn't win the race? Is that really a thing? And they were kept in a cage?
I just reached this part yesterday and yeah, that's the implication. They make a point of showing that Gus is a total sleazeball but he's the kind that's fun to watch. His VA clearly had a blast.

There is no possible way Remake and Rebirth are better than Dragon Quest 8 and 11.
You're probably right, I've never played a Dragon Quest game, even though I've played many jrpgs like finishing Legend of Dragoon and many Legend of Heroes games.
cookie-cutter basic storytelling to varying degrees of success.
The median quality of storytelling in modern AAA is so bad that remakes, both FF and RE, are in a different dimension of quality to most new games. If one also regularly consumes Netflix and Disney+ shows, then Rebirth will absolutely seem like an auteur masterpiece. This is how bad things are.

Not to bring the wokeshit wars in to this thread, but wow, FFVII Remake really pussied out. I remember the original FFVII wasn't hesitant to have fucking blood, dead people, open killing, and Jenova being barely a resemblance to a nude woman. What a bunch of faggoty pussy assed horse shit. They really should had aimed for an M/Z rating.

Well, at least it won't be a slog. Everyone whining about how Remake is bastardizing the original is right in their own way, but I can say that FFVII was more of a watch and see game than to actually play it for me. It is really pretty and is a watershed video game, but I've had more fun with FFVIII and FFIX.

As for the story, I really don't fucking care. It's done by the same team who already did it. It's not like it's mostly like George Lucas adding in unnecessary shit to the original trilogy of Star Wars that does jack shit to the story. I have a problem with DEI shit (something that Nomura even has a problem with it appears) but other than that here's hoping they don't do something faggoty like opt out of showing how fucked up Hojo's Jenova Project was, impregnating Lucretia, injecting Jenova Cells into Sephiroth when he was in the womb and her having violent seizures and awful visions of Sephiroth doing horrible shit as Jenova metaphorically rapes her and her unborn son.

Ok I finished the main story. There's a lot to unpack, but I liked it and I agree with fat. It's the best writing and presentation FF has had in while. It has a lot more balls too. Unlike remake we actually get to see a fair amount of blood and messed up monsters.

I think the most impressive thing about is the amount of restraint they had. I expected them to go insane from the get go but they really eased into it. Genesis and deepground are not in it at all and are just BARELY referenced. I appreciated how everything had a more coherent story structure and even when everything goes insane at the end, it feels very entertaining and legit interesting in a mysterious way as opposed to being bullshit. What sells everything is the character and party interactions. They put a real emphasis on making everybody feel authentic and have good chemistry with each other.

Also when you beat the game you can replay the entire thing with the girls in bikinis.

Game of the year.

Is the dog multiverse real or schitzo?

. It's real but it actually makes sense. None of this multiverse shit existed before sephiroth attempted to go back in time. It's all a defense mechanism of the life stream to prevent him from winning. There's technically 5 verses sure, but only two of them really matter. The rest get snuffed out as aerith's soul bounces from one version of her to the next while sephiroth hunts her down.
So is Zack back alive? Is he also force ghost? I remember Aerith death was 1/3 into the game which surprised me since I assumed it will be far later

. Yes he's alive and he gets pulled out of time from when he's supposed to die. Presumably because he's one of the few Soldiers who's strong enough stand up to sephiroth without getting controlled
For those who played Rebirth, did they cut the part at the end of Temple of the Ancients where Cloud beats Aerith?

Yes, although cloud says some seriously messed up shit to her and it's pretty heavily implied nothing was going to stop him from doing that if he couldn't get it from her.
And I thought Remake was bad. Rebirth is depressingly bad. The characters are disgustingly incompetent. How many times did they watch Cloud lose it and never once confront him or brace themselves in case he tries attacking one of their own again (already happens twice)?
Nahhhh. I thought the way handled cloud and the party's reaction to him going cray cray was excellent. First off, tifa is deliberately covering for him and there's enough external excuses for the party to either ignore or overlook his increasing instability. Moreover he's the biggest gun on the team. He's got a good enough track record of fighting sephiroth in remake that it's enough for everyone until
. The very end. Barrett and Tifas reactions to cloud at the end are amazing. They clearly realize he's insane (to them) and are a hair's breath from laying into him

Sephiroth is clearly not going to join the players side, its obvious the viceroy is Genesis working with Septhiroth to change the timeline. I for one am happy to finally have a conclusion to that after credits scene from Dirge of Cerberus, somehow Genesis must have used Weiss omega weapon powers to get between worlds and helped his buddy Sephiroth out.
I would love that to be true and there's enough wiggle room for it to work. But there's some implication that maybe Rufus was supposed to be or supply the Patsy? Sarruf is an anagram of Rufus

What sells everything is the character and party interactions. They put a real emphasis on making everybody feel authentic and have good chemistry with each other.
What I noticed is that party banter during walk-and-talk sequences tended to grab my attention and was worth listening to. Usually in modern games the filler dialogue between cutscenes is just noise, because it's thinly disguised directions from the game designer. A game designer who thinks you are retarded. There are a few exceptions to this, like Witcher 3. In Rebirth the party members talk and react appropriately to whatever is happening, sort of like real scene writing.
