The Final Fantasy Thread

For that much space, the game map better be the size of fucking Daggerfall, at least.
Its actually pretty fucking big, and even the Junon outskirts are a major "woah" when you can stand there and look up at the giant-ass city built into the cliff.

Gonna be playing Rebirth soon, what do I need to know going into it ? I skipped out on Remake since I've played the original game probably three or four times now and Midgar is always a slog, and I don't want to spend an entire game just doing Midgar story events for the millionth time. I know some things have changed though and that they set up the story a bit differently, so I wrote the few things I wanted to question, not sure how much of a spoiler they are:
  • Zack is alive? So how the fuck did Cloud even get his sword then?
  • And Jessie and Biggs are alive as well? They should have gotten crushed by the plate so not really sure how that happened.
  • I heard that the little ghost things are there to make sure that the events go the way the original game went, but since they got defeated now it's open season for changing whatever they want to with this story. Or at least that's my understanding of it.
I've been intentionally avoiding spoilers due to the fact that I know that they're going to change stuff with the story and that they already have, so I really just want to know what changed between the original story and now so that I'm not surprised by anything that I should already know.

To be honest I skipped a lot to just go through the main campaign and avoid spoilers. Was impressed at how good and meaty it felt even without the side content.
At first I took it slow and did all the side shit as I went, but then I just stopped and went through the main story. These games just don’t have good side activities.

You have to play remake to understand rebirth.
Zack is alive? So how the fuck did Cloud even get his sword then?
There’s basically two different timelines.
And Jessie and Biggs are alive as well? They should have gotten crushed by the plate so not really sure how that happened.
Biggs is. Not Jessie.
I heard that the little ghost things are there to make sure that the events go the way the original game went, but since they got defeated now it's open season for changing whatever they want to with this story. Or at least that's my understanding of it.
Things will likely go largely the same but there will be a difference at the end. There’s a specific theory I’ve heard about this.

You don’t really need to play Remake if you don’t want to. Just look up a video detailing what’s changed. Remake felt like more of a slog to me though so I’m biased.

We have people who haven’t even played the original after all.

I've been a massive dicksucker for FF7 Rebirth but oh my god this port is FUCKIN' HORRIBLE. Even when I'm running over 60fps the frametime is absolute dogshit, and somehow the frame lock makes it even worse. This is also the first time I've wanted to beat the shit out of the 'worKs FoR ME' crowd.

I just downloaded 16. I have never played a ff before, but something about 16 appealed to me. Maybe it’s cause I’m a unapologetic gow/Witcher shill normie. This just looked cool
Honestly you'd be better off just playing the Witcher instead since that was a way better "Final Fantasy" game than XVI. There is a reason why The Witcher 3 is still celebrated as one of the GOATs a decade after it's release and why no one gave two fucks about FFXVI.

ff7 will always be the best everything else goes all downhill from here if you ask me.
I'm no graphics whore but it has pretty bad graphics compared to almost every other Square game, understandably, but it really doesn't look that good. I think it's also too bloated with bad minigames. I think some were mandatory weren't they? I recall being stuck at a digging site on my first playthrough.

With mods the graphics don't really matter any more. Frankly it's pretty insane how good some of them look. But even the base game was pretty impressive for the time in terms of camera and environments. The shots where the camera pans out on a cg environment as your moving are pretty impressive.

On a CRT as God intended, FF7 is one of the most atmospheric games in the franchise with the best backgrounds imo.

On modern screens the prerendered backgrounds will simply never look as impressive as they were because it was full of pixel blending design.1000337397.webp

It's absolutely true. Especially for pixel sprites. Apparently old school games look worse in HD because they were designed to bring out more details for a CRT.

Some...translator guy (I forget his name but he's pretty well known. Tim I think) pointed out that the infamous "you're the best looking guy here" shot of Squall looked really crisp on a crt. It is known.

i remember playing this on the original hardware when it released on the big CRT TV in the family room. Such good memories. The visuals of the Sector 7 slums is burned into my memory.

9 is good but it's a bit overrated
The characters have no style and no arcs to speak of. It's a parade of homages to games that actually matter, like they’re trying to get by on the coattails of better ideas. And that outdated four-character setup? It’s like watching a VHS tape on a 4K TV—it’s just not cutting it anymore.

Zidane and Garnet are good characters, Steiner too if you can overlook his awful design.
