It's normal to be confused by all the terms in 13. I was too, initially. One thing they definitely should have done with the plot was show, not tell.
I can only assume they kept in potions because they're a Final Fantasy staple. Never really bothered me.
No, seriously, if you see this many flaws in 13, don't play the sequels. You won't get any enjoyment out of them if all you're going to expect is disappointment. And yes, it gets even more "nonsensical".
I'm actually go in any games with a open mind. Even if it doesn't go well, there's always something to learn about the game and what my preferences are. I don't know much about the sequels other then basic stuff. Both sequels may be fun, the only way to find out is playing them. I also going to say this. I actually don't hate FF13, I understand the problems, and I did like some aspects of FF13.
