The Final Fantasy Thread

Okay. I played ff1/2 back in the day but never got back into the series after it moved off Nintendo. (Despite having sony consoles i just never picked it back up ) I've been wanting to get into the series lately but I'm a bit overwhelmed with it. Any advice on what game to start at/which to skip/core titles etc? Where do the movies fit in? Do I have to play Kingdom Hearts too?
Just pick a fucking game and play it. Pretty simple.

I've never played FF X, but X-2 is like a primitive Bioware RPG story-wise and the combat system is super fun.
X-2 had the best combat system of any game. Real-time but tactical. X was just dogshit. Every boss fight was "Sigh, okay. What unique mechanic do I have to deal with?". You couldn't just grind levels and outdo a boss like any gym that counters you in pokemon.

I'm gonna give Squall Edgelord remake a shot but I'm not hoping for much. I hate Squall and Cloud to no end, and people always prefer those to any other FF game. FF4 was super nice, although also having shit puzzle boss fights, but the line-up was great and nobody felt like a true main character or a complete waste.

"We spent years on the FF15 engine so we could mill out games. Except those are remakes, and you get 1/3 every third year :)".

@Marissa Moira you may be the first person i've seen praise ffviii for much at all, mostly people shit all over it. I enjoyed it a lot for the mood and the mechanics, even if the story was shit. Squall is likable if you're into brooding, moody types, but as much as I enjoy the game (I've beaten it with all GFs, ultimate weapons, bosses, etc multiple times) I still have a lot of trouble liking many of the other characters.
  1. Quistis was interesting on but her story and growth are largely neglected once rinoa joins
  2. Zell always feels like a punchline who never grows at all
  3. Selphie is given some actual trauma but then is also neglected in favor of rinoa
  4. Irvine could have explored some interesting topics, especially following his initial emotional reaction to assassinating edea, but outside of the later orphanage reveal he just blends in with the rest
  5. Rinoa started off spunky as a big driver for the story but by disc 3 seems to have lost just about all agency and trips over herself for the men around her
The supporting cast like Cid, Edea, Xu, Laguna, Ellone, all seemed to have suffered collective brain damage, but maybe that was just Ultimecia's manipulation of the timeline to try and prevent Squall from knocking her out. I wanted to like them, but I still feel like many of the other FFs had more interesting and likeable cast members, especially 7 and 9.

When I think back to Final Fantasy VIII what makes me most nostalgic is the relaxing music and the locations. Every location is designed so well. They're highly detailed and have that lived-in quality. A lot of it is inspired by European archeticture I've heard. I'd like to live in quite a few locations from the game, well, save for the monsters, war and the sorceress of course.

Personally, I think IX's got the best cast. Most of the characters are endearing and likable. I already mentioned Vivi, but Zidane's a great lead character; he's charming and funny in stark contrast to the seriousness of Squall, Cloud, and even Terra and Cecil. Garnet's got a wonderful arc about loss and maturity, especially in the latter half of the game.

Not all the characters are made equal; Freya's subplot was cut almost wholesale out of the game, Steiner doesn't receive as much development as the rest, and Eiko can be grating. But at the same time, IX's cast feels so much more alive and personable than previous games.

Also Quina is the best comic relief in the series, fight me.

What about Vivi?
He's just the Token Black Mage

I think Auron and Yuna were good characters in 10- fairly believable, just the right amount of tragic. Lulu was pretty okay too.

I tried 12 but have never made it past the first 3 hours; all of the characters start off as so bland that I never wanted to beyond the first session.
12's gameplay carries it entirely. It's battle system is what Xenoblade borrowed from as well as the exploration aspect.

I've eyeballed the HD release, would you recommend it?
Yeah I would, the game now comes with the ability to speed up everything built in, removing tedium almost entirely. The battle system is also improved and doing the 100 level trials allows you to transfer experience and rewards to your party giving you a leg up in all parts of the game.

You still get kinda bottlenecked collecting the chops to gain access to the city, but you can purchase them from a vendor for some huge sum of gil.

I've played a translated rom of the original Japanese release of FF4 and thought the difficulty was OK. But when I played the DS remake I got brick walled by a difficulty spike and quit. Been meaning to go back to that sometime. Those character models are an eyesore though.

Which FF4 translation? The Je one or namingway edition? The Je one is atrocious and text reads off as if it was written by a 12 year old.

Hey, great article there, I love Mato's stuff. I honestly can't remember which version it was but that J2E one does look pretty awful there. I hate when translators add jokes and references that weren't in the original. Localize, but don't invent shit. Grumble grumble, look how they ruined Dragon Quest, grumble...

Translating from Japanese to English is tricky as is. I know the Live a Live Translation by Aeon Genesis isn't entirely bad. There are some weird flubs and really awkward dialogue.

The FF 4 J2E translation is just... what. I have nothing against swearing, but adding more swears to spice scenes up is just poor taste. Plus the pop culture shit reminds me of early Funimation DBZ with the lame jokes in order to be funny. I can tolorate some small extra lines from the OG Japanese scripts, but making characters say things that make them completely OOC is another story.

Final Fantasy VIII is my favorite game in the series, although it does sometimes share that distinction with other titles.

I know it's never gonna happen, but I would appreciate a Crisis Core type prequel to VIII starring Laguna, Kiros and Ward. Laguna is a far more likable character than his son and his friends are more interesting as well. He also has a compelling story that we only ever get a glimpse at in the main game, and one of the most badass battle themes in the series history:

As for the so-called "remaster" I don't see any reason to buy it. It's already possible to make FFVIII look way better than that pitiful effort Squenix sharted out if you are so inclined... Has been for years.

I was never fond of squenix's remasters of their snes/psx games, they always looked like shit
