Zodiac Age for FFXII has been surprisingly good. The voice acting is solid, the story is pretty solid political intrigue, the battle system is much better than 13, and the world feels like the right size. The licensing system is disappointing but functional; not too complex, but really lacking compared to classic job systems IMO. In the end, 90% of all battles are the entire party hacking away at everything in sight. Boss battles are also pretty disappointing for the most part. The quickening system (limit breaks) sucks but it doesn't matter much.
I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. I can't remember the last time that I wanted to see what happens next in the story of an FF game. I know a lot of people dislike Vaan but I generally like the cast quite a bit; there isn't really a main character, and Vaan is pretty believable as a brat who gets sucked up into politics and war. Balthier and Fran are great characters and the world feels pretty consistent unlike FFXV where everything was patchwork garbage. The music is pretty good too- different style from Uematsu but fits the world nicely. FFT had a great soundtrack and FFXII carries on the spirit well.
I'd recommend picking up Zodiac Age while it's on sale sometime. I've heard it improves upon the original a lot so I wouldn't bother with the original release.
...I guess i don't know how anyone can come to this conclusion. FF1-VI are pretty bare bones old school turn-based, VII is just "Attach materia and build up AP", FFVIII is beta-stage level and easily exploitable (there is some fun in that), and 9 is "Get weapon, fight monsters, earn AP" - FFX Sphere Grid is about on rails as the game is. FFXII is the most detailed of any game.
Is FF12 worth a buy? I hear less about that game than any other. I remember on its release most people mainly focused on bunny ass
Yes, Final Fantasy XII is worth a buy. The international and Zodiac versions with the job classes get the closest to the directors vision rather than the original western release.
It has the best world building in the game as well, the bestiary is detailed and the more of each enemy you defeat the more information gets unlocked for them. The hunts are also very interesting, a lot more interesting than FFXV. Voice acting is the best in the series, and the soundtrack is great as well.
