Blue Magic is always OP. They kept it around because it's tradition at this point. It's a relic from a time when kids were expected to meet up at school, compare strategies and determine which spells did what. At the time no one expected you could one day print out a list of enemy moves and torch the game.
Eh not always, Quistis and Kimarhi were kinda shitty.

Kimahri sucks ass and so does Quina from FFIX since all their damage is random or annoyingly grindy or gimmicky.

Quistis is okay since she comes with a lot of free magic shit in her limit breaks that you don't need to achieve with gimmicky setups like Rinoa and Selphie.

Quina is great, Frog drop is amazingly powerful and white wind is the strongest healing spell in the game.

Having blue magic behind limit breaks really sort of fucks up what makes it really good, which is being able to Cast White Wind, Mighty Guard and then -Insert whatever damage spell is good-

Yes you can abuse FF8's limit break system but if you are going to do that Squall, Riona and Zell do it better than Quistis does anyways.

That's what I mean. I fucking hate grinding up frog drop so it can broken. Zidane, Freya and Steiner can do 9999 damage with less prerequisites. And the best way of healing in FFIX is auto-regen plus long summon animations.

I will admit Quistis low tier since she only has degenerate to break non-boss battles. But then again this is FFVIII where there is over 100 ways to break the game so even decently balanced in that game will be considered shit.

Yes but you get other rewards for Frog Drop (and really Frog Drop is much less of a Grind than Choco Hot and Cold)

At least that would have just been a bold direction to take the remake in and not a horribly contrived reason why things are suddenly going differently now.
Which is funny because a lot of differences have nothing to do with Time Travel. It's a weird situation where the character who feels most consistent with their original self is Aeris because at least there's an explanation for her new behavior.
What seems especially galling, but not surprising, is that I think a huge chunk of the audience would be just dandy with Aerith being spared because they are more concerned with feeling good than emotional and narrative impact. It is literally the most important and well known scene of the game and they would have it altered without considering WHY it’s the most important and well known scene of the game.
I feel like you guys aren't that familiar with the ff7 fanbase. Especially with regard to Aeris and the schizophrenic way she gets treated. People will say they ruined an iconic moment by sparing her but really are just mad she lived.
Half the fans of the game think she just dies for shock value or to hurt Cloud's feelings with no relevance to the rest of the plot so the idea they're too consumed by reverence for her is simply not the case.
It's probably been mentioned in this thread, but VIII would have been a better candidate for this kind of timeline shenanigans. That game had actual time travel as a major plot point, and the whole time compression shit opens up a bunch of possibilities if they ever decided to do a "remake" in this style. But they won't because VIII isn't near the level of popularity of VII.

It's just baffling that this is the direction they want to take with the long-awaited remake of one of the most beloved games of all time. I honestly would have been fine had they just left the major changes in and not bring up the time travel shit (like Biggs and Wedge surviving, because frankly I half-expected them to go that route from the beginning). At least that would have just been a bold direction to take the remake in and not a horribly contrived reason why things are suddenly going differently now.
It's actually a fan theory that Rinoa time travelled to avoid a bad future. I guess Squall and Rinoa are like knock-off versions of Cloud and Aeris anyway but yeah time travel only works if it's the focus of the story. Which I doubt it will be for ff7. They'll have Cloud recount the story of how Sephiroth killed a green dragon once after witnessing a cosmic event in the previous game.

I can't parse what you're saying here.
I don't see what's so complicated. If she were to live the people moaning most about it aren't gonna be moaning for the story's integrity but because they wanted the satisfaction of her being killed off. Basically, shipping has completely devastated the story so you have people who want her to live for petty reasons and people who want her to die for petty reasons with almost nobody in-between at this point.

Basically the most significant scene in the game is a football for fandom politics.

Still dont know what the fuck that "hole for a face" creepypasta was about in one of the FF games when switching discs on the original PS2 version.

Now you"re speaking my language. Buttigieg Jessie ride or die
Why did they change her so much? Questions like that make me wonder about the development process most of all.
I wonder if it's as bad as they wrote the plot-critical and/or originally presented scenes and scenarios first, and then all the filler second. It would explain why the tone wavers a lot and the new ideas seem so much more indulgent.

I've seen it attached to that one theory about how in reality Squall got fucking pwned by Edea when she magic'd his ass at the assassination. The implications being that it was a headshot. The rest of the game after that point, supposedly, is Squall's dying dream.

The writing in ff8 would pretty easily allow for that, specially with how unfeasible things start happening and the fantasy elements get kicked up a notch. I don't think it's correct, but it's a pretty cool interpretation anyway. The game is so wish fulfillment already, it could just as easily be wish fulfillment for a dying Squall.

It's an indictment on 8's writers that "SID" doesn't lessen or improve the story in any way.

The story falls apart after Trabia Garden, so I interpret it as a fever dream.

The character has almost no personality in the original game, almost to the point where I’m not even sure it can be called a change. My only major complaint is that it makes just about every female character extremely horny for Cloud during the Midgar sequence, kinda dulling the tension of the core love triangle.

She was clearly a shy dorkish girl in the original imo
