The Final Fantasy Thread

It there an overhead map or it all third-person navigation?
There’s 2, technically hundreds of maps. But 3 actively used- 3D small area exploration, 2d over world, and a bottom map to keep track of all landmarks and monuments in Tokyo. The overworld, which is a giant recreation of all of Tokyo. It allows for 360 turning and navigation. A 2nd, which is a 2d giant version of the map on the lower screen. And when you enter an area, it’ll become 3d and there will be an even bigger area then what it looks like. It’s meant to make you get lost, but it’s still insane the ammount of stuff they crammed in there.

Is there a high encounter rate? It being Atlus I assume the answer's yes.
No, the encounters are all avoidable if you really want besides story stuff. They’re portrayed as pixelated 3D models in the 3d setting or little microchips in the over world map.

I’d recommend it. Easy top 10 Atlus RPGS and top 25 rpgs period for me.

Cool. Random mobs are the fastest way to make me reach for a walkthrough. If you roam around too much, you'll be over-levelled.
It’s pretty customizable in terms of your experience. You can choose how things play out, your own stats, what demons you recruit, etc. Most demons unless you fuse them naturally occur in one to three areas in the game and that will be it. You can have Apps, which is upgrades that can affect how combat goes.

For example, I invested a lot of app points into demon recruitment skills, so now anytime I encounter a demon I haven’t met, I can talk to the, bargain, and if the one’s besides it in the counter are lower level and I don’t have them yet, they’ll join. I play around with unique strategies like magic glass canons or physical monstrosities. It’s gotten so good I can get money, experience, and random quests from demons who are interested in some work.

Even the kind of melee weapon you use effects gameplay. If you have a mace, if you proactively attack a demon in the 3D world or just catch them off guard with a swing, it’ll cause more damage and you’re guaranteed to go first. Swords may have shorter range and are from the middle, they’re quicker to execute and can’t animation trap you.

These Pixel ReMasters may wind up being a long line of games. Apparently Square still is doing stuff for LiveALive and possibly Chrono Trigger. I Wonder if they'll get to Bahamut Lagoon and other games.

Still funny to me that a basic remake of ff7 could have printed money and not been prohibitively expensive and been guaranteed to succeed but they did this. I'd say it shows artistic integrity but I almost collapse laughing as the words leave my mouth. Just look at how raped ff7 is already.

The industry's in flux
It's run by mucky mucks
Pitching tents for tentpoles

And chasing Chinese Bucks - Jack Black

There are so many ultimately pointless plot threads and characters that exist just to fill up time but Square is too proud to let simply go away in later parts. Apparently Roche is teased to show up again.

I actually enjoy Roche since he's the first person calling out Cloud and also testing him. I love the MGS4 levels of autism about following plot threads. Like bloody novella characters in 7R.

You give me impotent fury!

It sounds like he is way over-extended, with the games being designed by committee. Some of the added bits (like Roche) are pretty cringe and look like they belong in Kingdom Hearts (which SE favors).

In fairness, honestly sounds like he is way over-extended, with most of it being designed by committee. Some of the added bits (like Roche) are pretty cringe and look like they belong in Kingdom Hearts, which SE favors.
I think Nomura gets a lot of deserved flack but is also just the whipping boy. Like I said, Nojima isn't that great either but he's treated like a genius.
Even Sakaguchi made very bad calls despite my overall preference for his era.
