To add my own personal anecdote, the ancient Persians were slaughtered by the Mongolians with nearly 90% of them being killed. Although it was done in the name of conquest and not ethnic cleansing it is still a very dark and embarrassing stain on the nation's history. I find it insulting to place the struggles my own heritage and of struggles people of other cultures had to go through on the same level of being called a wrong pronoun or told to go to a men's bathroom.
