So, I was visiting my dad tonight. He asked me to pick up some snacks (he's trying to quit smoking) and like a good son with nothing better to do, I obliged. So, I get there and he's watching Dragon's Den.
We don't really have much overlap with TV shows. I like sci-fi, cartoons and cooking shows. He doesn't like fiction, watches Dragon's Den, the news and sports I don't. The only things we both really like are true crime shows and boxing. I've watched Dragon's Den with him a few times and while I enjoy it, it's not one of my shows.
Anyway, when I see what he's watching he tells me it's a good show. I agree and remind him I've watched it with him quite a few times. On screen, there was this guy being ripped into and I ask my dad what's going on. He explains it and we both agree that the guy was an idiot who thought the Dragons were fools. The next guy's preview interested me, so I stayed to watch it. I think I surprised my dad when I began to tear the product apart, highlighting different ways it was a stupid idea aside from what the Dragons said.
Then came the last pitch, beer bins. We were both curious about this, especially since there was a bidding war in the preview, so I take a guess over what exactly they do (I was guessing a bin with a removable cupholder sheet inside that you could could put ice under. It was just a bin perfectly proportioned to hold 24 beer bottles/12 wine bottles with handles). He said my version would make a good product and then explained to me a few ideas he's had over the years. As well, we discussed a few things about our restaurant and relevant side projects.
It was just one of those moments, you know. Everything seemed to click between the two of us. We get along well enough but tonight, it feels like we connected.
