I've been building my own computers for 16 years and I've never had a board just up and die on me. It was working completely fine and bam!, it just shut down and that was it. It makes me sick that I'm probably going to have to shell out hundreds to get it all working again (:_(

I'm surprised to hear that because it's the most common major component to fry.

I built this pc 3 years ago, so ASUS no longer makes that model, and no online retailers carry it anymore. I took it in for diagnostics and the tech is pretty sure it's the mobo, I should hear more by Wednesday. If it's the motherboard, I'm totally screwed, because current mobos don't use the same chipset, so I'll have to replace the CPU as well (and most likely the RAM). Oddly enough the only board I've ever had die on me was an Asus. Asus stuff either lasts forever or does catastrophically.

I've had it happen fairly often but I used to make computers mostly from junk left over from fixing other computers. So I'd end up with flaky motherboards that wouldn't run someone's Windows any more but some Linux variant would be more fault tolerant. And then sometimes they'd finally finish dying. One of my favorite worst computers was literally in a pizza box for part of its life.

Oh I feel that dude. One of my current Windows 98 machines for retro LAN parties is literally the result of getting shitfaced drunk one night with some friends and one of them just starting to rummage in my junk draw. We couldn't find enough screws so bits of it are held together with blue tac, bent wire, tape and superglue. The power button on the case didnt work so there are two bare wires that you have to short to start it. It's, interesting. runs ok though.

Edit: found a picture, yes it's a Dell case, the mobo is Dell too so boring and reliable wins out in this case.

So my pc died after 5 years of service and I'm trying to build a new one. I got almost everything planned out already but I'm having trouble choosing between the gtx 1050ti and rx 570 which were said to be the roughly the same in performance and price range. Any tech savvy kiwis can ELI5 the pros and cons of both and what you would recommend?

I only know of the GTX 1050ti as that's in my PC, but I like what it gives me with what I normally do.

I got a 144 lb block of marble that came from from WA. It's big enough for a few projects I have in mind. When it's done and all polished up, I'm told it will be a smokey purple color. I do use power tools to get a piece to the size I want, but hand tools are used from there. It's going to take me a long time, considering how hard and unforgiving it is, how slow I have to take things, and the fact that I have to do every project in clay before I even think of carving the marble. But, you know, I'm determined.

I'll probably post a project or two in a different thread when I get done.

For the past few days, I've been waking up to a moment if feeling dizzy until it wears off. I hope I'm not coming down with vertigo.

Also, my phone slipped out of my hands, landed screen down in the hard ground with an unpleasant noise, now I'm stuck with a spiderweb pattern to see through. Yet somehow I could not gather the strength to feel mad at myself over it. I hate getting old.

doesn't sound great, you might want to get that checked out.

If you tried to take a dollar from me, I would go to great lengths before I let it go, waste enough time that it's not worth it, but if you told me I could make TWO dollars with some effort, I'd be like it's two bucks, whatever.

Am I normal

I was thinking for an upcoming Kiwi Farms stream maybe we can do one for charity, maybe give the money to some Autistic charity or something.

I fucking love the fact that my bestie works in a mini-zoo, cause hillarious shit keeps happening:

- Two days ago, she saw that one of the parrots was looking real ill, so she moved it into quarantine and spent the rest of the night holding fingers it won't die. Next day, her supervisor explained to her that parrot (a girl) was fine, and, in fact, such state was caused by her being fucked silly by male parrot. I told her that she knows how parrot ahegao (it sounds pun-able in russian) looks now, and we both laughed like morons.

- Today she called me as she was walking the pony (most of those talks consist of me hearing her cuss the horse out for either trying to eat something, or to run away), pony got bored, started sniffing the phone and managed to succesfully put me on hold (which is hard to undo on that phone, so I had to redial), then ran away to eat garbage again.

My pc died on me. I thought it was the power supply, as the mobo’s lights and LED read-out weren’t coming on, but upon installing a new supply, no dice (:_(. I built it three years ago, so of course I can’t just buy a direct replacement because no one is selling it anymore. I just hope my cpu and memory aren’t fried as well. Hate this shit *sigh*

Mine died too. And there is no way I can get a new one at the moment. Using a tablet feels so weird. But I do have a keyboard and it's better than nothing. I shall have to wait awhile to replace anything. The monitor was about to blow anyway.

Been taking the shoulder pads out of some jackets I have. I find that they look a lot better resting closer to the natural shape of my shoulders.

I remember my mom would take the shoulder pads out of everything. In the 80s literally everything had shoulder pads because of the Dynasty look. I have always hated shoulder pads.

Unfortunately, a lot of padded jackets were made with about an inch or two of extra fabric to accommodate. So although a jacket will look better, it will still look like a set piece from a post-Depression Bing and Bob movie. And you can't reasonably have it tailored, either. The shoulders are really hard to alter. It's more cost-effective and practical just to buy a new one.

I live for going to bed with less shit in my apartment than when I woke up; cleaning plates the second they're done and throwing out anything remotely useless.

At the same time, the idea of having to install this new CPU cooler, instead of using this 8-year old stock one, just fucking bothers me. It's the last part of my build after I installed fans and all, but dear lord do I hate building pcs. If it doesn't work, I lose all connection to the outside world. Moving from one tower to another had me on the edge of ending it.

Then again I never build PCs from new and on a nicely lit table. I sweat over my bed.
