Whoa. What.

Yes, IceCreamMan, please post more pictures of Alaska. I know some people who used to live in Alaska (on an air force base maybe?).

Unfortunately, all that snow is what it'll look like in Ohio in a month or two :( Right now it's 40-50 degrees, which is tolerable, but it's going to get much, much colder.

Ok, if you want them, I shall provide.

Over the weekend we saw significant snowfall. 9 inches or so, according to meteorologists. This caused a great need for shoveling. Here are the results. I'll go find more neat stuff to post pictures of tomorrow.

This is the intersection right outside my house, which will probably be a recurring theme to my pictures because I saw the desire for more when I was in my driveway. It's hard to tell but there was a ton of snow out there.

This is what I came out to this afternoon.

As you can see, we kind of carved a path up to my front door.

It's interesting to note that Fairbanks, which is in the interior of Alaska, doesn't really get a lot of snow during the winter. The coastal regions see a lot more, due to the increased humidity (Fairbanks is a very arid region, we're really almost desert-style as far as aridity goes), and sometimes they literally get snowed in, to where they can't leave or do anything at all. Last year in a town called Cordova, right on the coast, the Alaskan National Guard put out a call for volunteers to come down and help shovel people out of their houses. I will attempt to find those pictures, it was fun and me and some friends had a good time and drank lots of beer.

Thank you for reading and looking at these pictures, I enjoy sharing my state with other people. :)

Its darker up there than it gets here in rural Arkansas.

So in a few hours, I have an eye exam. True to my nature, I can't help but wonder about all the horrible stuff that can be discovered during it. I really wish checkups could be "routine" for me.

dumb question time. For the past few weeks, this touring company has put an ad in my local newspaper, wanting tour guides. I majored in History, and you would think this would be a good job for me, right? I looked the company up last year when they posted the ad, and looking at these dissatisfied customers made me not want to apply for the company. Should I apply for this place, or just skip them due to their bad reviews?

I have a job interview this afternoon AUGH YEAH

It's at Chris's favorite restaurant, McD's. I hope it will tie me over until I get a job in a pharmacy this summer. Money is money, whether you earn it from MD's or some glamorous job.

sparklemillhouse - it's not a dumb question. Considering I have a college degree in business and might work at McD's, I'd say go for it. If they have you work a probationary period and it doesn't work out you could always quit if you figure out it's a crappy company. I think the downsides are pretty low.

Edit: I had the interview at McD's and the manajerk said I was the best of the candidates so far. I hear back on Thursday, I might be a :qsand: chef for real soon.

I hope that works out for you, GrandNumberOfPounds! To celebrate your impending employed-ness, I will now share with you some photos.

Lets talk about Fairbanks a little bit, guys. Fairbanks is the second-largest city in Alaska, with around 30,000 people in the town itself, and 90,000 people in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. This isn't very many, and the fact that the borough is the size of the state of New Jersey serves to illustrate my point about us being rather rural. But it's neat, and I love it. Today it was 21 degrees when I went to the gym, around 11 AM. It is now 0 degrees outside.

Despite the temperatures, people desire a clean car. I think it helps us believe we are somewhere warmer, as that's a common refrain amongst transplants: "oh man it's so cold how do you people stand it?"

A lot of folks that live here are here for work, and that includes our big military bases, Fort Wainwright for the Army and Eielson Air Force Base for the Air Force. They're a great economic driver, and by and large the Joes and Janes are really nice and caring people just trying to do their jobs and live their lives. Some are jerks but that's the same anywhere, and it's definitely a minority. I apologize if that seemed harsh, I don't mean to denigrate the military, because as I said, 98% of them are real nice, cool people who do cool things, like defend our freedom and all that. I told a couple of dudes in uniform today that I was glad they did it, and to any former or active service members reading this, thank you, too. I'm a big cowardly baby who couldn't morally commit to shooting folks so I stayed home, so I am grateful that y'all do so.

I thought this was an interesting scene, so here's a photo about it. What you're looking at are giant dump trucks, the big yellow ones from our Department of Transportation. As I said previously, we got around 9-10 inches of snow over the weekend, and we need to place it somewhere when we plow it, so what we do is we gather it up in giant trucks like this one and place it on undeveloped lots that people own around town, mostly for free since these lots have no development on them anyway.

This is one of those piles of snow. Soon, a giant dump truck will come to pick it up and take it away.

This is an action shot! The light had just turned green as I was fumbling clumsily for my phone, but as you can see, this is what it looks like to drive around here. I like the way the sun hits Birch Hill in the background.

And finally, here's a local food establishment run by a good friend of mine who does that MMA bit, those cage fights and stuff. I worked out with him today so I came back to his joint here to get some food and shoot the shit for a bit. He keeps telling me to get into the octagon but I really don't want to hurt people because I'm too big for that sort of thing. I always find it funny to show people pictures of his Hawaiian-themed cheesesteak place. Foods really really good too, it's a sort of Mexicali fusion, no phillies here! All pineapple and teriyaki, that sort of thing. Several kinds of cheeses, real good stuff.

Thanks for reading. Let me know if there's anything in particular you want to see more of, friends.

All that snow looks lovely...I really want snow this winter but this area hardly gets any. If we don't I want to make trips to somewhere that does.

Gas is expensive in Alaska. Here in Arkansas its 2.88 a gallon.

I'm so amused by the existence of an Alaskan Hawaiian-themed Mexicali cheese-steak stand.
