The Godzilla Thread - Plus other giant monsters, no matter how popular or obscure

M'kay, I'm back. Now I wouldn't say I feel underwhelmed, buuuuut I'm gonna blame myself for getting way too hyped up and expecting something grandiose about the Titans. But at the same time, I feel like the movie was just 20 minutes too short? It's just shy of two hours, but I think it could've benefited a tiny bit by another scene or two of something. Maybe spend a little bit more time in Hollow Earth, or with Mark Russell as he keeps an eye on Godzilla. Or I dunno, perhaps we could've gotten a montage of what the other Titans have been up to since we know they're out there doing their own thing. Honestly am not sure why we didn't get more mentions of them.

My thoughts have gone all over the place, so spoilers I guess.

I came for the monster fights, though, and I gotta say it was super cool. Easy to follow, choreography was fantastic, watching Godzilla move like a crocodile was awesome (the fight with Ghidorah had to have rejuvenated him, probably feels 1,000 years younger lol), Kong using Hong Kong to his advantage was super like him to do, the first wrangle in the water was real tense, and Hollow Earth itself is neat and I love the Kong temple there. I believe it was mentioned there might've been Hollow Earth people in the past, but they're long gone now. Actually, I don't know why people don't like Hollow Earth, it's been built up for years at this point, so the pay off was worth it, though yeah, I agree that it could be an entire movie on its own. There's a lot of things about it that haven't been answered which I think was done on purpose.

But for sure I loved seeing Kong again now that he's older. Although interestingly enough, I think we've forgotten that compared to the other Titans, he's young. Like he may still be a teenager in Titan years because all he wanted was to go home. Him going into the Hollow Earth because he believed/hoped there was family down there was sad. The little girl, Jai I think her name is, being that little connection and acting as a link was a good idea. I almost choked up when Kong signed back to show he fully understood everything. The humans try to browbeat it to the audience as much as themselves "These creatures can't think for themselves, it's all instinct" but it's nice for these movies to show that is not the case, it never was.

I'm still trying to decide if the lack of a "clear winner" was a good idea or not (although yeah I agree with @StarkRavingMad, Godzilla definitely won since Kong was practically out just before MechaGodzilla burst out), but I'm leaning it towards being not a big deal. Godzilla was never after Kong, Kong was just in the way. Humans made him be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and he wanted nothing to do with it. The humans convinced themselves the two were going to duke it out for title of king based off of ancient drawings, but nah, I don't think Kong really cared, especially if Skull Island has been wiped out thanks to Ghidorah's storm making things worse. Godzilla this entire movie was just being a grumpy old guy who wanted Kong out of the way so he could go after the real target, which was MechaGodzilla--or more likely the remnants of Ghidorah. That's why he was super pissed, and I don't blame him for busting through two human cities when he normally was steering clear from them.

Though weirdly enough, he could sense the radiation spiking in the Hollow Earth right where the Kong temple was? Like did he know there was a disturbance/enemy down there? Uhhhh okay.

Thinking about it, most of the movie feels like they're leaving it up to the fans to decide where to take the world to next, and to interpret what's going on in the Hollow Earth and with Apex/any organization that has it out for the Titans. Like for reals, where did Jonah and his group go? They're still out there, I don't think they work for Apex. They sold the Ghidorah head to Apex, but why? What're they planning? Was MechaGodzilla truly made to replace Godzilla, or was it to kill Titans? There's like multiple answers given in the film, and any of them are plausible.

I was still super into what went on, though (even the side-plot with Maddie and gang, guess we needed an audience surrogate to get a tour into another organization not Monarch. Thinking back on it, however, I don't think it was all that necessary), and the carnage was what I came for. I actually cheered and clapped when Kong crushed the one H.E.A.V. the CEO's daughter was riding in as she screamed "NO-NO-NO". Like got'cha, bitch! Loved it. But not as much as Godzilla and Kong going apeshit on each other in Hong Kong 'cause they're just a couple of cranky Titans who just want to go home and sleep. I pretty much believe Godzilla was telling Kong "Know your goddamn place, peasant" when he pinned him down and roared in his face, and Kong submitted, but still with a bit of rebellious spirit to him.

The personalities with these two are *chef's kiss*, I love seeing them in motion. Just give me a cut of the film of these two on-screen doing whatever and I'll watch it forever.

MechaGodzilla's design has definitely grown on me. It's just too bad we didn't see more, especially once it went rogue which was poggers (but instead of being possessed by the spirit of the original Godzilla, it was Ghidorah trying to come back, I suppose). My brother said he was expecting the other two heads to start sprouting from the neck, but this isn't like the trilogy films, kid, he's not made out of nanomachines this time around.

So yeah, it was worth seeing it in theaters, but there definitely should've/could've been more to it. Looks like at this point, if no more films are happening, it's going to be left up to the fans to fill in the blanks themselves, and I'm okay with that. Now that we know Godzilla is still the actual king and Kong is just gonna make the Hollow Earth his home, all's right with the Monsterverse.

Seriously, it's this meme:

Anyhoo, three-outta-five stars, I guess. It's the weakest of the series tbh and I still reaaaaally like KOTM over it, but those monster brawls were worth it. I'll rewatch it for those in the future.

EDIT:
Anyone know how downloading the rock worked to make a source of power?
For one thing, I really like the scene where Kong's just checking out the place, it helps to add on to the mystery of the Titan lore in how they were once worshiped. The charge port (literally is just a charging pad in the shape of Godzilla, it's great) I'm sure is just a way to absorb radiation directly from the earth's core, especially since it looks like the blade is a plate from Godzilla's species and it was activated when the axe was put in its slot. It also didn't look like it was completely bone, the tips of the handle were some kind of ruby or something, like decoration or as a conductor.

Just chalk that up to an open mystery for the fans to play around with. Honestly am gonna be peeved if the prequel comics actually explain a few things that were hinted at in the movie, my copies were delayed on Amazon for a week, and had they come in on time (like yesterday/earlier this afternoon), I could've read them and psyched myself up more for the film.

watched a pirate copy
it was okay
maybe it was encode somehow lowering the budget but holy shit when the CG was phoning it in there was some stupidly lazy and bad shit
there was a clear delineation between "the cg we cared about" and "the shit that filled time", like those chains, any of the water around things out at sea, like the boats or the monsters
I don't know if it's a matter of cg effects backsliding or that they used to pick what to do with cg better or what, but there were more than a couple of shots where I was like "bruh, that's really what you're turning in for the finished work?"
I don't really watch Hollywood modern shit so I forgot how weird and plastic modern actors look. And how weird and plastic their words sound.
Kong on the throne was worth basically the whole movie. Every human was stupid and annoying and a waste of time. Mechagodzilla was good from the back and not so good from most other angles as a design. Skull Cockpit was metal af. HK fight was pretty good. "Kong good gorilla" was fun.

I am going to watch this movie later today in a theatre. I am mostly blind and I have low expectations (since Adam Wingard is directing) but I hope the movie is fun, will post thoughts later since I have been looking forward to this movie to see how it will be handled.

Saw it tonight.

Not much to add, it was okay, but this whole Monsterverse cannot continue if they keep playing musical chairs with the cast and established ideas. The continuity is barebones and does not properly set up future films. I know there are contract disputes and dying old media that have investors worried, but come on pepper the film with easter eggs. That’s how Iron Man built the MCU.

I just saw it with my wife today. I loved it, but I cannot ignore some of the plotholes or seemingly missing plotpoints. I will pontificate in a spoiler.

1. How did tech dude get the Ghidora skull? Did he take it from the Ecoterrorists? Did one of the heads not get completely vaporized in the final confrontation between Big G and Ghidorah?
2. Where did that Serizawa kid come from? What was his motivation to kill G?
3. The Kong throne scene. Yeah it was cool, but how did he know how to do all the things he did?
4. Was Mecha G working under Ghidorah's influence or did it's programming just go haywire?
Overall, despite potholes and some minor "Ugh" moments with some of the human cast moments, I dare say that GvK was my favorite Monsterverse film so far.

1. There are supposed to be two Ghidorah skulls I think, 1 in MechaG and the other as the pilot control. At the end of KotM they show a severed Ghidorah head so one of them is probably it.
2. Bad screenwriting or secondary material probably, motivation would be revenge for his dad nuking himself and blaming Godzilla.
3. Skarsgard talks about genetic memory for fish and birds, I think it was supposed to be based off that.
4. My read of it was influence from whatever was left of Ghidorah.

Could definitely be wrong but those were my takeaways.

1. Pretty sure Jonah and group sold it to Apex, but for what reason, we don't know. Here, FWIW, there was apparently an IMDb summary that said this:

"In a new world where man and monster now coexist, Monarch must lead the way to a prosperous future alongside the Titans, keeping humanity in check. However, rival factions that want to manipulate the Titans for war begin to rise under the guise of a nefarious conspiracy, threatening to wipe out all life on the planet. Meanwhile on Skull Island, strange seismic activity draws the attention of Godzilla and Kong alike."

I think there was definitely a rewrite that happened and it cut out some plot-threads that were leading up to that blurb. I honestly do believe the movie was cut short and there was supposed to be more to it, but a lot of fans were saying that the short runtime was a pro move on Warner Bros./Legendary's part 'cause it didn't overstay its welcome. Which yeah, I get, but I was still left wanting more/feeling like something was missing. The lack of Titans probably had something to do with it, honestly.

2. Aftershock (I believe, can't find the copy atm) and novelizations had Serizawa briefly mention a son, but I don't think he ever stated what he was doing unless he mentions robotics; when I find Aftershock, I'll edit this if it's wrong. (EDIT: Yeah, he's not mentioned in Aftershock. Mistook Serizawa for someone else, I think it was Houston Brooks who talked about his son?) Chances are, it's to get back at Godzilla for "killing" his dad.

3. Maybe he just wanted to take a seat, he'd been on his feet all day lol. Was a neat scene regardless. Honestly, the whole Kong temple scene was interesting 'cause whether it's based on instinct or he was drawing to conclusions in his head, Kong was able to do a couple of things that comes off as contrived, but it showcases his intelligence. He was discovering history of his ancestry whether he recognized it or not, and I think it's cool.

4. Kevin's Ghidorah's conscious I think still lived on probably due to the psychic linking Serizawa did, but we don't know what was going on with that nor why it was Serizawa was seemingly okay with it. He may have recovered it enough to finally take over, or he could've rushed it because Godzilla was on to everyone and he was just itching to get his revenge.

I came back from the theatre and after watching it, I have to say it's a really good mindless monster movie.

The human characters were mostly just there and only served to move the plot along but I liked Black Alex Jones and the mute girl, they were pretty interesting characters while the other human characters were okay. However, the Token Nerd character was probably the worst part of the movie for how annoying they were and contributed so little that anyone else could've done what they done. But at least there was no pretentious bullshit like in King of the Monsters so that is good at least.

Aside from that, I enjoyed all the monster fights as it felt like each fight got better than the last with the best fights being the Hong Kong fight for the set pieces it is using as well as how Godzilla or Kong weren't holding back any punches, plus the fact they had a clear cut winner was a pretty ballsy move on the director's part. However, the final fight with MechaGodzilla is probably the best fight in the entire Monsterverse as it was just a brutal beatdown with no fucks given and the right amount of action.

I was surprised that Adam Wingard pulled this off and with the way this movie ended, it would be fine if the Monsterverse had ended here since this satisfied almost everything I wanted in one of these mindlessly dumb monster movies that focus on fights.

I would wholly welcome more Monsterverse material, though, I just love the lore so much.

I thought about it last night, and I think of all the cinematic universes, Monsterverse has gotten lucky it's been created by actual fans. Not that I don't doubt actual fans have worked on the other cinematic universes out there 'cause yes, the age of the fanboy is exciting but real super worrisome because everything's turned into fanfic tier shit, but Godzilla is versatile enough to take on anything thrown at him. Kong: Skull Island miraculously managed to get worked into being a pivotal point to the Monsterverse for what was originally meant to be a standalone film, and each film being directed by four different fans managed to flow relatively nicely into each other. Other film series can't boast the same with such confidence.

The Monsterverse clearly wasn't planned from the get-go when the 2014 film came out, but there was legit love put into it and the directors made their dream monster films (though I dunno who's the bigger fanboy than Dougherty when he stated his Shogun Warrior toy is his Hobbes). I'm sad to see it go, but I'm okay with leaving it to the fans to do their own thing with it. Maybe it's a good thing it ended on its own terms, its world is open-ended enough to explore and draw to one's own conclusions with it.

Oh, I don't know if it was ever stated by James Rolfe in the past before, but in his GvK review, he mentioned he was offered by Adam Wingard to have a cameo in the film. However, his second daughter was about to be born, so he turned it down. Missed opportunity, but what can you do.

The dates don't match. Principal photography started a year after his daughter was born.

I don't know what truly made him turn down a cameo that would take a single day of filming with allegedly all expenses paid, but he pulled the NO TIME card.

I was quite impressed by the way that all the characters in this film were able to look at any event or situation, no matter how bizarre or nonsensical, and instantly understand what the hell was going on and deliver exposition about it,

As for the title bout and the winner, what can I say?

I'm glad that King Kong definitively won, as in the original. The early scene aboard the aircraft carrier in which Godzilla narrowly stalemates Kong and they cut the engines to trick him into leaving brilliantly foreshadows the later scene where Kong pretends to lose and slows his heartbeat down to fake his own death. After Mechagodzilla wastes all of his ammo on Godzilla, Kong comes back to easily defeat him and prove that he is the strongest of all monsters. The last scene where Kong puts down the axe but Godzilla is still too afraid to face him again really drives the point home.

Probably good that they made it that subtle, because I couldn't take all the fanboy cope and delusion if Kong had straight-up beaten Godzilla down with his superior primate intellect the way he logically should have. I mean, Godzilla is a cool character too, it's good that he wasn't totally overshadowed.
