The Godzilla Thread - Plus other giant monsters, no matter how popular or obscure

Ah, nice to see a fellow Gigan enjoyer.

I'd really like to see Gigan's origins expanded on a little bit too. Just enough to sort of give us an idea of his history but not enough to explain everything (besides if we saw what his life was like before being a cyborg or something like that would cause people to focus on potential angst rather than everything else about Gigan). I always saw Showa Gigan as the kid friendly version of Millennium Gigan but always preferred the intelligence of the former.
I have the concept of gigan being an actual sentient kaiju sized galactic mercenary mostly because the concept seems fun

Double post but who fucking cares can I say I'm just sick of "serious force of nature Godzilla" so much new Japanese shit is just turning Godzilla into a glorified walking prop (and the anime trilogy could barely mange walking) with a gormless vacant stare all the time I want my Godzilla with some damn character and personality dammit it's why kotm and Godzilla vs Kong are among my favorites in the entire series because they let the monsters be expressive and full of personality even the fucking robot had so much expressiveness

But no we gotta get Godzilla back to his "roots" doncha know not that silly fun stuff that 95% of all Godzilla movies are we gotta pander back to the like 5 movies at most that were serious. That's how you spot a fake Godzilla fan the moment they start complaining Godzilla it's taking itself seriously just because the original was a straight laced affair

That's one reason Biollante is my favorite Godzilla movie, Godzilla expresses emotions (well, frustration, rage, 'I'm sick of this shit,' and 'Oh, you're approaching me?' which is enough emotion for me) and isnt just an allegorical toy.

I can just imagine the Legendary Godziila doing this with a completely stone-faced expression - one that says "I will kill everyone responsible for making me do this."

The poz must grow. It's amazing they can't help but shove their faggotry into everything. Really shows how "secure" they are in their "identity" and world view. "Something something Godzilla reproduces asexually therefore he's queer" or whatever.
Ironically the only film that covers Godzilla's reproduction is the '98 Zilla. The baby Godzillas shown in the Japanese installments are never explicitly stated to be direct offspring of Godzilla and they never explain how he could reproduce if he's the only one of his kind remaining. He most likely adopted them as his own.

That's pretty much how Minilla and BabyGodzilla became Godzilla's sons. We don't know where the eggs came from otherwise, but Minilla emitted distress signals that attracted Godzilla where he chose to take him under his wing (he was harsh to Minilla in raising him, though). BabyGodzilla is apparently an actual Godzillasaurus whose egg was laid in a Pteranodon nest and Rodan cared for it like a brother. Supposedly Godzilla could sense BabyGodzilla after he hatched and was looking for him, but for all we know Fire Rodan's sacrifice or his memories being implanted in Godzilla as he revived him or whatnot are what got BabyGodzilla adopted. He took on Godzilla's characteristics as he grew mainly due to radiation, but that's actually a thing that happens where sons will take on the image of their adoptive fathers.

I like to think Godzilla got tired of minilla after destroy all monsters and ate him because I fucking hate that thing and everything about him and his design and he shits up the ending of final wars too. I love the show era for what it is but there were definitely missteps along the way

I haven't caught up on this thread yet so I don't know if this guy's videos have been posted here before but I figured you guys might find this interesting:

Lots of good information on one of the most ambitious Godzilla movies ever made and one of the few that gives my favorite monster, Anguirus, some respect.

I'll have to watch that. Destroy All Monsters was one of the first Godzilla films I owned on VHS, and I may be biased but I still think it's one of the better Showa films. A great soundtrack too.

This thing turned up in my youtube recommends some time ago. I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned in this topic yet. I have no idea what this is from, and the fanfictiony crossover aspect kills my curiosity, but 'Snow Godzilla' looks pretty cool.

I thought the Legendary monsterverse films were huge disappointments. @Hepativore and @The Gifted Kid well explained why the 2014 film fell apart. While I agree, to be honest, it was still better than the two films that came after.
I don't really know how to explain it. I realise we're talking about a character and franchise that aren't exactly the pinnacle of profundity. But I think we can look kindly on Gabara, breath-powered flying Godzilla and gorilla aliens as part of a film series that had already gone through several installments, from horror to spectacle, into kiddie fare and senility.
Given Hollywood budgets, Hollywood effects, and Hollywood hype, especially the 2014 trailers I didn't expect the whole thing to go that way in just two films. I didn't expect it to turn into such a fucking cartoon. They went Pacific Rim on it. They went Atlantic Rim on it.

I could type out an autistic list of complaints, but in a nutshell, the monsterverse is like any other franchise trying to ape the MCUs success. Legendary had more success than most, copying a bunch of superhero films, but from the start they forgot that Godzilla isn't a fucking superhero.

Shinkalion is pretty fun as far as anime that are made to shill toys go. That's from the movie version. Which, among other things, features Evangelion and Hatsune Miku. I don't get all the weird train stuff, but my buddy's a big train autist, so he explains stuff.

Lol Godzilla just wrecking everyone's and their little robots' shit

As is proper

So who pays him and how does he spend the money?

I'm picturing that after every job he goes to an alien titty bar full of giant alien strippers dancing in lingerie while he flings singles off his hook hands.

The new American Godzilla films had their problems but they did a fantastic job of giving the monsters emotions and conveying personalities that the Japanese films couldn't truly convey because of the limitations of working with suitmation technology. Ghidorahs three heads bickering and having their own personalities was great. My favorite part of Godzilla vs. Kong was the part where Kong is swinging through the buildings like a monkey in the jungle before Godzilla blasts him with his atomic breath and Godzilla lets out a small chuckle. He's either thinking "Heh I still got it", or "Bitch that's what you get for messing with the king".

there's an interesting concept in the idea that there are sentient kaiju out in the wider universe of godzilla who interact with other aliens like orga was

You had to go and bring up what was running through my head when I typed up my last post. I can't understand filmmakers who have to give inhuman creatures - especially reptiles - human expressions and gestures - like smirks - to convey what they might be thinking or feeling, and I can't understand filmgoers who have to have it spelled out for them to that degree.

It's a deficiency at both ends. Sorry not sorry. There's more sincerity and empathy in the few moments of 'lesser suitmation' Heisei Godzilla dealing with the wounding and apparent death of Godzilla Jr., than all the rubberfaced multimillion dollar emoji sets featured in the Legendary flicks.

That includes - no, wait, yes - that includes all the human characters.

Kong swinging and flinging about Hong Kong like he was made out of marshmallows and strong farts is another thing that comes to mind when I think about the unintended benefits of older, clunky suitmation vs. the best, slickest, most expensive movie magic that modern Hollywood has to offer. There's no weight to these absurdly huge creatures. I don't want them to be crushed to puddles by their own sheer size as if it was a dull, grey examination of real world physics and I did kind of like a few moments of Kong swinging through the tunnel in Antarctica but these hulks were effortlessly suspended higher than my sense of disbelief. No gravity, no gravitas, it just boils down to a big monkey shaped cloud of pixels bouncing spastically around the screen, and a director rubbing his pecker raw.

A Space Godzilla sorta gets into that
