The Godzilla Thread - Plus other giant monsters, no matter how popular or obscure

Ah, nice to see a fellow Gigan enjoyer.

I'd really like to see Gigan's origins expanded on a little bit too. Just enough to sort of give us an idea of his history but not enough to explain everything (besides if we saw what his life was like before being a cyborg or something like that would cause people to focus on potential angst rather than everything else about Gigan). I always saw Showa Gigan as the kid friendly version of Millennium Gigan but always preferred the intelligence of the former.
I agree with your views but allow me to play Devils Advocate for a moment.

I say keep Gigans origins mysterious and vague because it makes him cooler. Make him like Boba Fett in the original Star Wars movies where he's a cool looking badass in armor with only the most minimal of characterization, ("No disintegrations"). Let the viewers imaginations run wild with Gigan and let them come up with their own origin story for him. Is he a captured monster forcibly converted into a weapon by a bunch of alien cockroaches?, A merc for hire?, A serial killer who upgrades himself after each kill? Let the 10 year old boys come up with their own version of Gigans origin, it will probably be better than what a room full of executives at Toho can come up with.

Now...this beings up an interesting point...

Because of Gigan's cybernetic nature, and apparent intelligence...it would be an interesting idea if he has made his own automated base/outpost for himself somewhere in space where he can repair/get medical attention sort of like Superman's Fortress of Solitude.

Isn't Gigan literally just a monster-for-hire? Didn't one series literally joke about him being paid. Literally jobber monster chicken.

Did you know there's an actual connection between Zilla and the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie?

Creature designer Patrick Tatopoulos.

Koopa's look in the de-evolution sequence was the precursor to Zilla's look. The '90s was pretty wild.

(There's also through him connections with other movies like Bram Stoker's Dracula and Stuart Little of all things. Fan crossovers could have a field day going through Tatopoulos' filmography alone.)

That image of Gigan having a supervillain lair made me laugh harder than I should have.

They made an animatronic of Zilla? That's pretty cool and sad.

They had 150 million, (twice the budget of Jurassic Park), to throw around as well as animatronics, suit actors, connections with one of the greatest stop-motion animators ever, cgi, and the movie is full of incredibly dated PS1 tier cutscenes. Jurassic Parks dinosaurs still hold up even today, hell even some of the cheaper Showa Godzilla movies effects are still entertaining enough today even when the suit is falling apart. Independence Day's effects are awesome and still hold up today. How did they drop the ball so hard with the 98 film?

Edit: replaced "lesser" with "cheaper" because some of those cheaper movies can still be fun and entertaining even when made with pocket change.

Gamera probably rocks the MAP flags 24/7

Zilla 98 would have been at least okay as A Different Beast From 20,000 Fathoms Ripoff, but putting the big G name on it fucked it even if they had done any of the cool possibilities
and iirc Godzilla 1984/85 used some fuckhuge robot thing like the T-Rex and it was basically nothing

there was this great live show bit with Kamen Rider (maybe J? #1? whatever), Ultraman, various other randos and baddies, and then Gigan suddenly does a run-in, starts wrecking shit, only to be interrupted by SKEEEEE-ONK

The 1998 Godzilla was not as bad as it was made out to be by some reviewers and I do like his head design in that version of Godzilla. The one Godzilla movie I do not like is the 2014 film, as 2/3rds of it is the main character and his daddy issues where it only becomes about the mutos and Godzilla for the last third of the movie.

I mean, if the director wanted to make a family drama movie, why did he not just do that and leave Godzilla 2014 to somebody else?

Kent Brockman vs "Gorblatt! The Thing From The Depths!" would have been a decent enough movie. Calling it Godzilla was hubris.
One Godzilla knock off that was conceptually interesting is a movie called the Giant Behemoth from 1959. Basically, a prehistoric sea reptile in hibernation under the ocean gets irradiated by nuclear testing nearby. The thing goes on a rampage in the nearby city. While it is slowly dying from radiation poisoning, it has absorbed so much fallout that it also irradiates anything nearby. So, the military and a team of scientists have to figure out how to stop it without scattering its remains across the city and irradiating the surrounding populace even further.

The one good thing was the cartoon that came out a year later though it used the design of the 98 version was closer to what Godzilla originally was. I really wish they would use the unused script from 94 which had Godzilla take on an original monster called the Gryphon, I mean could that still be made today?

I would assume it's in some dev hell that it's more trouble than it's worth to unravel who owns Gryphon
but yeah I've barely glanced at GINO Cartoon and it's absolutely redeemed the existence of GINO.
beyond that time GINO jobbed the the real guy, there's also those various fanarts of Godzillas bro-ing it up and GINO is this kinda weird burger guy,
I recall some guy also did one piece of GINO hanging out with a bunch of iguanas and generally cool.

The 2014 movie was a massive disappointment for me personally. That movie had so much going for it but instead it just flushed it all down the toilet. The film could’ve been a fun father son adventure with Brian Cranston as the crazy dad trying to uncover the mystery of Godzilla. Instead they kill the Brian Cranston in the first 20 minutes leaving the boring son character as the lead.

The movie also has two new monsters (which I’m always in favor of as opposed to just remaking Mothra and Ghidorah over and over). However unfortunately they’re really unremarkable and bland. Seriously I legit can’t remember anything about them which is kind of a problem because usually what makes a Godzilla movie interesting is Godzilla’s opponent and the story around it.

Finally and most egregiously the film makers decided it was a good idea to constantly cut away from the monster action. I paid good money to see Godzilla blow the fuck out of cities and beat the crap out of monsters and the movie constantly teases it but cuts away every time. I guess they were trying to “subvert expectations” which admittedly in a way they did; they subverted my expectation that this was going to be a good movie.

Overall the movie is just boring as fuck and doesn’t do Godzilla justice which is sad because there were elements of an entertaining movie at the beginning but obviously that didn’t carry through the rest of the film.

What form of currency is Gigan paid with? (sorry if dumb question)
From what I have seen, Gigan is usually some sort of mysterious cyborg space monster that several alien races have temporarily taken control of for him to do their dirty work, but Gigan usually ends up resisting their control eventually and starts acting out of his own volition. It was never officially elaborated on what his original origin was in most of his appearances as the beings controlling him were not from where he originated or created him in the first place.

I just love practical effects. Shame Sony raped the movie with shitty ideas. I like "Zilla", especially the older concept art of him, but they shit the bed hard. Amazing that smaller budget Japanese movies have better effects and cooler monster stuff than a movie with a huge budget.

The poz must grow. It's amazing they can't help but shove their faggotry into everything. Really shows how "secure" they are in their "identity" and world view. "Something something Godzilla reproduces asexually therefore he's queer" or whatever.
