The Godzilla Thread - Plus other giant monsters, no matter how popular or obscure

They can but its all a matter of familiarity and sticking with whats safe.

Why the hell you think they stick with big monkey? Because even normies know who King Kong is.

Unless this girl can turn into a giant monster, guess what boss girl, you are not a monster.

You are a fucking human character in kaiju media, you are unimportant by nature.

Hopefully its not Shin Godzilla but in the 40's.
Yeah, I'll agree with that but I still find it lazy and unimaginative.

Godzilla Minus Zero is the movie I'm most looking forward to watching.

Had no idea this was even going to be a thing. Has both Kurt Russell and his son playing the same character decades apart. I tend to like Kurt Russell so this already seems more interesting than the cartoon.

New trailer for Minus One is here, looks a lot more grimdark than Shin.

The idea of watching Oppenheimer and then Minus One back to back seems almost perfect. This will be the godzilla I always wanted: dark and grim. I kinda wish they had kept Godzilla's design under wraps but hey, I'll gladly see this if it comes out in my area (Shin Kamen Rider came out so why can't this?)

Damn that was brutal, people getting crunched left and right. I'm getting more and more excited to see this in the theaters. Is this going to be released here in the states at the same time as Japan? It'll be interesting to compare the reactions from both Japanese and American audiences.

I'm curious about this though, is he burning, decomposing, does he actually get hurt by their weapons?

I do like the callbacks to the 1954 film such as oncoming train being stopped by Godzilla's attack and him grabbing part of it with his mouth. Also, this brief shot looks to be similar to this screenshot.

I wonder if the line, "That monster will never forgive us," means this Godzilla will be like the one from GMK where he was brought into existence by the souls of all Japan's victims from WWII decades after the original was defeated.

The release date in Japan will be November 3rd while the US release will be December 1st.

The very premise of Godzilla attacking essentially right after the bombs dropped is all it takes for me to be interested.

Theory: He was there when the bombs dropped, and went back into the ocean to recover. He's also sort of like Shin Godzilla where while radiation does hurt him, it doesn't actually kill him, and just ends up making him stronger.

Very rarely has a movie got me excited, nor do I go to the theater often. I had fun at Maverick and Sonic 2 last year, without expectations of them being cinematic masterpieces. Minus One looks like it actually means business, though. The aesthetic alone has me chomping at the bit to watch.

I haven’t been into Godzilla much since the ‘90s, but this looks like a proper enough callback to revisit the big guy. I, too, am pumped.

Gamera Rebirth is pretty good.
It smashes the parts of Showa (the crazy kaiju fights and plot), Heisei( the ancient origins and human story), And even The Brave (damn good kid characters and kid story). The human animations are a little rough, but the rest of the budget went to the properly brutal Gamera kaiju battles.

It was a good return for Gamera.

Just finished watching Gamera Rebirth and I'll go out on a limb and say it was better than Singular Point and the Planet of the Monsters trilogy (although that's a pretty low bar imo). The fights were all good the redesigns I thought were really good. Guiron was probably the most original of the monster redesigns with his acrobatics and attacks that impressed me quite a bit. I'd probably put Viras at second and Zigra being my third favorite of the monsters. The technobable was kept to a minimum, I'm looking at you Singular Point and Planet of the Monsters. The kids story was pretty good and ya the human animations were a little off but everything else looked pretty good.

I'll admit I didn't actually see that plot twist coming at the end even though it's been used in other franchises so that was a nice surprise.

Overall I'd give it an 8/10.

P.S. One of the end scenes had me a little confused so I wonder if they were gonna try and do a longer series in the future.

Not gonna lie, the first end scene was telegraphed pretty hard since the character repeatedly said he just wanted to be a businessman.
The instant all the characters got their protosmartphones, I called it right then and there how that plotline was going to resolve.
I did belly laugh that they went the full mile with the presentation and his attire to make it just that blatant.

Only one episode into Gamera Rebirth but I enjoyed the Sega product placement

Did anyone actually watch the Skull Island show, or just conclude it looked stupid from the trailer or whatever?

So like, Kong only appears this the show for like...30 seconds in each episode until he becomes plot-relevant in the last 2.
The rest follows a human plot that is determined to undermine itself with "witty" dialogue and a mother-daughter drama that flops on its face due to the daughter being the biggest eye-rolling shitbag character on the show and also the most important person there.
It's a little lackluster.

That's what I keep saying to everyone is that you can't make just a fun monster movie anymore without it having be a subversion of what it is. Give me rubber suit monsters fucking shit up on a miniature stage or wade pool then whatever the monsterversus or modern toho doing.

Fuck evolution stick to what worked and use current year technology to enhance it. Just like how they did for the millennium era of movies, warts and all!
