The Godzilla Thread - Plus other giant monsters, no matter how popular or obscure

I hope movie General MacArthur and movie President Truman are like lol get fucked have fun dealing with this shit, Nips. We fucking outta here

Godzilla movies that have too much Murica in them don't work imo, or at least the Murican parts of them don't. Shin Godzilla toed the line and pulled it off as far as how involved can you have the US be and the movie still works, but I hope in this one America is more in the background. Don't need two Americas front and center, Godzilla is America, one is enough

I must say I liked the American '85 movie. It was quite impressive they brought Raymond Burr back to reprise his role of Mr. Martin from American version of the first movie and he gave a solid performance.

I liked how the clueless ginger adult child officer was like 'yeah let's go get Godzilla' and Burr told him shut the fuck up retard we only have the budget to film me standing around talking in a situation room

But yeah the American-added scenes ended up being pretty influential on the themes of the Heisei series

And the corridor, don't forget the corridor with that big Dr. Pepper vending machine. They did some dumb stuff with it, like removing the explanation of that big green bug on the boat that took like a few seconds in the Japanese version but I think that Burr's speech at the end makes up for it.

yeah as much as there's questionable choices beyond that, Steve Martin returning was dank

Burr is the one who did the heavy lifting ofc, but I thought all the American actors did a better job of conveying the awe and horror of watching Godzilla stomp Tokyo than the Japanese cast. I got more feels from those scenes than any of the original movie, except when Godzilla wakes up and btfos the Super X

Aside from the comic relief ginger officer compulsively drinking soda. But then Japanese version has its own comic relief hobo character.
Even he finally gets serious lol

So does the hobo at the very last instant before Godzilla steps on him

The Return of Godzilla is my second favorite Godzilla movie (#1 is the 54 movie)
I fucking LOVE the tone and atmosphere of the movie. It has that hazy 80s warmth and the music, THE MUSIC. I bought an LP of the soundtrack I love it so much. Godzilla looks incredible, and the human characters are really pretty good. My only gripe is the occasional lazy eye from Godzilla thanks to the janky animatronic.
The Burr version is really good too, and Burr flat out told the people making it if they made it a comedic goofy movie he'd be out, and insisted it have that dark tone.
Which, aside from ginger dude and the Dr. Pepper machine, it kept. The part with Burr talking about Godzilla while footage of the 54 Goji is playing is haunting.
FUn fact: the soundtrack was taken from a shit 80's scifi movie, separate from Godzilla, but I like it, it adds that creepy, dreadful feel.
Edit: movie is Def Con 4.

For me every Japanese Godzilla movie where Godzilla is he only monster is an enormous treat and something very special - I really love '54, '84 and Shin.

I like the suit, this shot is fucking amazing:

I'm not a big fan of the animatronic head used for close-ups, it can look good, for example when Godzilla is hit by the cadmium missiles and is bleeding from the mouth

But it can also look a little goofy.

I think the eyes are the problem: too big, too white, too human-like, just like the late Showa. When they are obscured by the smoke it looks great.

Shame it's unavailable in any legal form of distribution. It's nice to have the Japanese version but having both would be great.
Do you have the Japanese blu-ray remaster from a few years ago? I read a review saying that the remastering job wasn't that good. At this point I might go sail the high seas for a hd version even if it didn't have English subtitles. I've really been wanting to see an hd version of '84.

I have this one:

It's DVD but it's OK - it's the original Japanese cut and it does have English subtitles and dubbing.

This looks pretty cool I might have to see if I still have a free 30 day Netflix trial or something. Also is it just me or is it an anime trope now to have some deep voiced breathy adult male saying foreboding things right before an action sequence? I don't know it seems like I see that more and more these days and it's kind of annoying.

Oh great another giant ape. Is it just me or are westerners incapable of making unique and cool looking kaijus?

They can but its all a matter of familiarity and sticking with whats safe.

Why the hell you think they stick with big monkey? Because even normies know who King Kong is.
Gettin' real strong Rogue One vibes with this dialogue...

Riiiiiiiiggggghhhhhhttt....🙄🙄🙄

Unless this girl can turn into a giant monster, guess what boss girl, you are not a monster.

You are a fucking human character in kaiju media, you are unimportant by nature.
New Teaser for Godzilla Minus One dropped.
US release is December first. Looks really dark and the fact its set in the late 40s is something new.

Hopefully its not Shin Godzilla but in the 40's.
