It really was the best of both worlds. Heisei is my favorite design. Shin was great in it's own right. The Legendary pictures aped more of the Millenium design. But I love that this had some of the jagged spikes without making them look "extreme" and having him stand up more than lean over.

They portray Godzilla a whole lot better in the monster first than they do in this insisting mess of a film. I just wanted Toho to make something like the monster verse but with better fights and less drama. Looks like I have a new appreciation for the American movies now, at least they don't try to reinvent the wheel and have every movie be a reboot.

Hey we still got Godzilla x Kong coming up even if it it's mainly focused on calling but still a lot more than enjoyable watch than some Japanese coping drama that we saw a million times. At least legendary is trying to add deep lore and making everything at least somehow interesting.

But in the end of the day I would rather have Godzilla just be a costume battling puppets and some CGI blob.

I enjoyed the usage of the setting and its limitations compared to something like Prey. And if we're just gonna be redoing and referencing past psuedo sequels to '54 then it's about as an appropriate time period as it can be set in. Liked all the performances given. I was very impressed by the CG given the budget and how behind the times Japanese CG in particular can be. It's definitely better CG than say any Marvel movie in the past 10 years. I'm sure there's some nitpicks I'll have with the story but those likely won't come up till a rewatch. Oh also I wasn't particularly huge on some of the liberties by the subtitles. Nothing that ruins the movie but there were times when the subtitle script was waxing poetic at an emotional scene where no human being would be talking this way.


I tried to keep myself in the dark as much as possible on info on the movie. Was happy to recognize lots of faces. And one man in particular who seems to be gunning after Kane Kosugi's feat of being in Godzilla, Ultraman, Kamen Rider and Super Sentai (as separate roles obviously). And yes I know two others after Kosugi have at least accomplished being transforming heroes in 3 of the 4.

I think Kane is one of the only toku guys to dub himself, too. Only other moonmedia person I can think of who did that was Minmay's voice actress

Just got back from watching this and hot damn was it good. I'll echo most of the sentiment here that the human drama was very good. I absolutely felt bad for the characters and for what they went through during the war. I was surprised that Noriko and Akiko weren't his wife and kids at the beginning of the movie. Them being homeless and orphaned added a lot of layers to the story and how they came together despite the war that's just happened. I'm glad they did it that way. I think my favorite character is probably Sumiko the neighbor that lost her kids, the actress did such a great job that she ended up being my favorite, I'm a little surprised at myself for feeling that way. Akiko was super cute that is all.

The musical score in this was also really good, the chase scene's musical sequence did a hell of a job building the tension, the theater was dead quiet during that scene.

Minor nitpicks I wish there was a little bit more Godzilla in this but it was a cool juxtaposition that a lot of his scenes were in the water vs previous films where most of his scenes were on land.

The CGI was pretty damn good, there were a few rough spots but nothing too egregious.

The ending was pretty original and I appreciated the fact that it was keeping with the period it was set in. That was probably the most gruesome death since Vs. Destroyer.

I enjoyed proto godzilla quite a bit.

I kind of wish they wouldn't have shown as much in the trailers and tv spots that would've been a much more suspenseful reveal in my opinion.

I don't know if this is my new favorite movie Shin was just so balls to the wall crazy with the designs and his heat rays that I couldn't help but love it. This is definitely in my top three.

They make it work because the human drama is compelling. Godzilla is unequivocally the "bad guy" here, and I was filled with genuine dread at his every appearance.

Shin Godzilla at least took place in modern day and not try to be some historical piece. Seriously I wish that they could just move on from the first movie and just make something like the monster verse with deeper story and off the Wall action. The reason why everyone's shilling of this movie because they're thinking it's going to be another top gun Maverick which was another garbage movie being nothing more than a future length US Air Force propaganda ad and that is woke free. Didn't like any of the characters in this film but I thought that killing Godzilla again was kind of predictable I thought in the trailer the atomic bomb was going to drop on him and he was going to absorb the radiation becoming Super Godzilla from the SNES game and really sink Japan down to challenge deep.

Yeah. The best ones are when Godzilla or another monster represent something that's really interesting. Like the OG being a metaphor for the fears of nuclear war/the firebombings. Or how in Godzilla X Mechagodzilla, Godzilla was an allegory for North Korean/Chinese aggression and had lots of not so subtle digs about Article 9. I rewatched that one recently and I had forgotten how much I like the allegorical stuff there.

I think the greatest gift this movie gives me is allowing me to finally feel comfortable saying "shin fucking sucked".

Shin was far from bad, and I get the point of making the political shit dry (because it is) but I feel like Anno did weird shit just to be weird. I love his sense of direction and Shin Godzilla itself looks great, but some things just DRAGGED.
Also, aside from Rando, the other guy who was his friend with the glasses and the hot Japanese chick who spoke Engrish (who I only like because she's smoking hot holy fuck) I didn't care about anyone in the film. I do like how they accurately portrayed the Japanese government as how they really are: incompetent losers.
BUT....I do agree, Minus One blew Shin out of the water. The only Godzilla movie that is on par with MO is the 54 classic.

Right... Just give me final Wars part 2. Godzilla needs to just go back to a fighting monsters power rangers style rather than push all this political messaging about the Japanese government being incompetent.

At least the good thing about them is they haven't let illegals into the country like many other nations have especially Europe.

The new Gamera series got this right and hoping for them to get a new movie that isn't a bunch of insisting sperging or historical pity. It was good for one or two films but doing it over and over again just sours the brand.

Okay two things:
1- I love the cheesy movies with monster brawls. I mean hell, one of my favorite Godzilla movies is Godzilla vs Destroyah. But I can also appreciate the more serious movies. Gojira, Return of Godzilla, Shin and MO are amazing movies, but so are the old monster mashes. (except Godzillas Revenge, that one is trash)
2- Japan DOES let in third worlders, but not as many as the US or the (c) UK. And thankfully the Yakuza prevent them from doing their rape shit.

I might actually want to see this in a theater, and that's so rare now. Everyone's going crazy for it that I respect. Is it just because Hollywood's been so rotten and this is refreshing or is truly good?

At this point 'film of the year' is a pretty low bar for me, sadly.

ETA: I didn't like Shin at all, too talky and boring and didn't like the style.
