The Godzilla Thread - Plus other giant monsters, no matter how popular or obscure

I wish Legendary had some balls and just picked a decisive winner instead of having them team up to fight mechagodzilla.

I'm torn on Mechagodzilla being in this movie.

On one hand, ripping off Batman V Superman (of all fucking things) to kind of get out of having to have either Kong or Godzilla lose is lame.

On the other hand, I get Godzilla and Kong fighting Mechagodzilla, which is a 5 year old me's dream come true! And while it is cool to see Godzilla and Kong fight each other, there is that part of me that would get a kick out of them teaming up too.

I'm still holding out for Mecha King Ghidorah, but I'm resigned to Kevin being its power source at this point.

Some fans were speculating that it would start off as Mechagodzilla using Kevin as a power source, and then Ghidorah would start to regenerate inside of Mechagodzilla, the heads and wings would sprout out of the body, making it some hideously twisted version of Mecha Ghidorah.

Not going to happen, I would kind of be down for that if they had gone that route, lol.

Like a reverse on the heisei ghidorah/mechagodzilla. That would be the best of both worlds for me honestly!

The filmmakers are apparently insisting that there's going to be a winner of this fight.

If true, then I think Kong is going to win. I have a feeling that they haven't called him "King Kong" yet for a reason.

The cynic in me always felt they only called him "kong" for licensing reasons.

On another note I give props to legendary for giving their monsters their own identity as "titans" and not referring to them as "kaiju".
It's a pretty spastic thing to be so uppity about but to me there is a true difference between the easts kaiju and the wests giant monsters.

I was already not thrilled about this movie, since having Godzilla fight King Kong is like having Super Mario fight Pac-man or some equally irrelevant icon that's done far less and is far less likeable, but holy fuck are the fans insufferable.

Maybe it's just because I know Goji is going to lose because, you know, he can kill a regenerating alien god dragon but not a damn gorilla.

The new Singular Point teaser didn't really do anything but show off Rodan and Jet Jaguar more, but I'm still excited for it.

New Skull Island animated series? I'm down!

I am not sure who else is familiar with the Monster Island Buddies channel but he posted a lengthy video yesterday about the Godzilla fandom possibly being toxic. I never knew about the YouTuber he talks about but hearing how the fandom got a stigma because of Deadzilla rightfully upset me.

I think it's a wonderful video he did, rightfully pointing out how the word "toxic" has been thrown around so much that it's lost its meaning, and that the shitty actions of few shitty individuals don't equate to the fandom as a whole, so in his honest opinion, the Godzilla fandom is still a good fandom (and in comparison to other fandoms, as long as you know what to avoid/ignore in terms of elitism, yeah, it's one of the more chill ones). I wasn't aware of what happened with Deadzilla since I never watched his videos to begin with far as I know and my only exposure was his guest appearances in Monster Island Buddies, but MIB clearly was so effected by it that it still is upsetting, yet he still respectfully talked about it as an example of how it cast a dark shadow over the community.

Only thing I disagree with him on is his comment on gatekeeping since I do believe there needs to be some form of it to make sure the community doesn't become warped into something it's not just to appease a small minority. There's a difference between that and elitism although it can overlap, but I think tokusatsu fans know better than to bend over backwards for newcomers who have no real interest in becoming one with the community.

All fandoms have undesirable elements within it. Its just the way of things.

In my experiences, I never found the Godzilla fandom to be THAT bad. I think part of the reason is that Godzilla is weirdly diverse in how people get into it. It attracts fans of Japanese pop culture, fans of foreign films, fans of special effects films, fans of monster movies, fans of B/Cult movies and this is after taking into account all the different film series there have been: The Classic Golden Age of the Showa Period, The Updated Comic Book Continuity style of the Heisei Period, The Experimental and Creative Millennium Period, and several American films to boot. (By the way, I have talked to younger fans that said the 98 film was their first exposure to Godzilla and helped get them into it)...it surprisingly covers a lot of ground with plenty of entry points for fans to get into. Because of that, its hard for the minority of shitbags to really ruin it.

Steven Universe's fandom is so awful, I've avoided the show entirely. I can't judge it. I've never watched more than one episode, and that isn't enough to get a fair assessment on the show, but Christ almighty the fans are so awful, I want nothing to do with it. Rick and Morty fans are so awful that it went from being one of my favorite shows to one that I stopped watching. The declining quality of the show is part of that, but the fans' awfulness is so noticeable that I don't want to be counted among the schmucks.

But Godzilla...yeah, never really been a problem. You get the occasional over-obsessive dork or the people that draw sexualized fanart and what not, but its not big enough to where it applies to the fanbase as a whole, and its easy to ignore. One of the reasons I still get excited for new Godzilla material is that its one of the few pieces of pop culture that hasn't been completely infected with woke crap. Again, there have been attempts (I've seen arguments that Godzilla is ACTSHUALLY A FEMALE and Mothra is a Mega-KWEEEEN or whatever) but it hasn't snowballed into anything that dominates the fanbase and starts mass arguments. And I think a part of that is because Godzilla appeals to fans with different tastes that like it for different reasons (again, surprisingly) and you don't get that massive unified cringe that other fanbases have.

Part of Godzillas success is that he has so many different movies and different tones that so many different people can enjoy his movies. From serious looks at the horrors of the nuclear age to cheesy B-Movies there's at least one movie that appeals to you. Godzilla is either a reminder of mankind's reckless abuse of science and the evils of war personified as a radioactive dinosaur, to a commentary on Japans relationship with other countries, to goofy movies where Godzilla dances on the moon and does a flying drop kick on a giant beetle. End of the day whether you want a philosophical look at the effects of WW2 on Japan or want a WWE smackdown between two monsters there's something worth watching.
