The years match with the info posted earlier in the thread. That's enough information for me to break reasonable doubt and assume the information as genuine.

The farms has a non-intervention policy so that means nobody posting here might bother to check if he's alive through the US Embassy in Tokyo (there's even a US number so for burgers there's no excuse of international calls), aside from perhaps though who (rightly) consider the livelihood of this dude critical to the wellbeing of the site.

However there are thousands of people reading this thread right now, and nobody has even confirmed the status of this guy. He could be alive right now and on the verge of actual suicide for all we know.

Why hasn't anyone reading this done what is ostensibly the right thing to do? Call up the embassy and say you're worried about the wellbeing of a US National. For all we know Byuu may still be alive but we can't ensure he won't actually kill himself in a few days if adequate help isn't delivered to him.

Apparently they've been getting a lot of calls about David Ginder, and the level of concern was sufficiently high that they put in the effort of finding him. Anyway, turns out he's absolutely fine - they managed to track down his workplace and catch him there; he explained that he'd had a bit of a meltdown over the weekend but he's bounced back. They actually gave me his number, and I phoned him! We had a lovely chat and Dave explained that he's really embarrassed about everything and ashamed of what he put his internet friends through, so will probably stop posting on the internet for the foreseeable future - he said he saw it as a clean break and he's going to focus on going to therapy and making new friends in Japan. Dave even decided to use some of his savings to book himself into an exclusive ryokan (with a private onsen!) in Hokkaido - he's not taken a holiday in three years so his company's let him take a month off. Lovely bloke, it sounds like this was a real wake up call.

To respect Dave's privacy I will not be discussing this further. I will, however, put these details into an anonymous Googledoc and post it on twitter, so that various news outlets can publish a retraction.

Tossing an imageboard site up is like an afternoon's worth of dev work. Install web server, install imageboard package, etc. Maintaining it is the hard part, especially given how often its users like to post illegal things.

I've bugfixed code Kirtaner's written. I'd be substantially more concerned about byuu.

And another question: where did this info come from? I get that a KF user posted the initial catch, but has he said where he got it from (he was asked but I saw no further reply from him). I checked out his work - it's pretty impressive. I was involved with the reverse engineering scene for a while, but nowhere on the level of this guy. Very few are. He would have had no problem getting employment in any major corporation on any continent. Might not have made millions, but could make a very very good living for himself, and with a lifestyle in a country of his choosing. The japs are big on reverse engineering. They do it all the time, ditto the Chinese (look at their latest fighter jet lol). It's always been a very grey area, and for that very reason persec and opsec is always taught at first level when getting in to the game when you are tested by the higher-ups for aptitude. It's no surprise he covered his tracks so well, but also having said that, the throwing out of a bit of 'chaff' to put people off the scent makes a lot of sense as well.

It's not hard to implement even for a retarded script kiddie like Kirtaner, there are a lot of platforms to choose from. He just forked Wakaba, added some garbage in PHP to it and called it Taimaba. He's been trying to polish that turd since 2007 and his code is still garbage, that's why he won't make it open source. That, and then everyone will see how exactly he implemented the secret CP board on 420chan.

The hardest part of running a chan site is moderation, you need to be actively preventing it from turning into a shithole full of CP. That is obviously not a problem for Kirtaner, in fact he considers it a bonus.
