The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy

Oh there's a weird faggot troon (?) voicing one of the female characters. 🤢🤮

I'm pretty sure one of the robot characters (Nigou) is a troon; there's a scene where the characters enter a generic anime style dream where they attend a normal high school, and the character looks female, but is constantly referred to as a he/him and "sir".

Oh god we can add it to the Woke Games thread then?

Nigou is NOT a troon. I am 70 hours into the game, and there is no evidence he is female. He is just a robot guy with big lips.

I can’t believe I am saying this, but… this troon actually did a good job?? I had no idea was voiced by a troon until now. Hiruko’s voice sounds like an actual woman.

Judge for yourself.

The game looks gay as fuck but I want to play it anyway but also don’t want to play it on switch or PC.

There's some genuinely interesting and funny routes in this game. Unfortunately they decided to bury those routes in few metric tons of shit just so they could boast about 100 endings.

Make no mistake, this is a VN with a sprinkle of combat. There's 3 maps in the entire game and the gameplay loses its luster after 1 or 2 routes, route-exclusive fights notwithstanding. Thankfully the devs were aware of this and let you skip previously-cleared battles.
The writing is mediocre for the most part but some routes are pretty good and several of the mysteries were intriguing enough to keep me hooked. I was genuinely in the dark about a lot of them, which is always a good feeling to have in one of these games.

Even though there is a ridiculous amount of routes and endings (proper and quick ones), a lot of them feel straight up incomplete. @Flopper here said the true ending left him asking "that's it?" and I got that feeling from several routes. Wish they'd let the game cook some more, as they definitely had unfinished or rushed plotlines that should have been allowed to develop further, but I guess money must have been running out.

There is quality writing in here, but it's drowned out by a whole lot of "who cares" content. Nonetheless, I respect the ambition behind the project. I want more huge overarching stories, connected through several little threads like in this game. Hopefully they keep it up and improve upon their craft.

Oh and the voice acting is really good (please ignore Moko). Whatever gripes you may have about the occasional faggy line here and there, the characters feel really lively. Sirei was definitely one of my favorites.

I couldn't be arsed to do all the routes, out of the 23 or so, I did maybe 8 of them?
But yeah, a lot of them just suffers from writing issues; I may be misremembering, but there was one route where Sirei is destroyed and is later repaired, and I believe no one asks him what happened to him, perhaps it was explained but I simply missed it.

There are a lot of braindead and retarded character moments in the slasher/zombie routes, it's not always clear which plot device works and doesn't because of some arbitrary reason the writers pull out of their ass, Class Armour seem to do absolutely fuck all - the characters just wear them "for safety reasons" but don't take advantage of their weapons or abilities whatsoever. They DO bring the gameplay mechanics into the storyline, but then it gets ignored when it's inconvenient to the writing.

For the SF Route, so much needed to be explained that doesn't; Hiruko exposition dumps a whole lot of info on you, and it's pretty much never explained, it's just a thing that happens to her for reasons. The phrase "You don't remember that timeline because you haven't remembered it yet." gets repeated over and over as well, and it gets exhausting.

So many of these endings feel like filler that it honestly feels like they could've cut it down to 50-60 endings. A few routes have a choice that's immediately followed by another choice, where all 2-3 options are immediate bad endings. Why not just stick one bad ending after the first choice? The conspiracy route feels like the absolute worst example of this, and is probably the worst route -- a max 30-minute route that lasts four in-game days, yet somehow has eight different endings that are all complete dogshit. The mystery route is terrible, but at least Uchikoshi tries to do something with it. I've done around 11/21 routes so far, and while there's definitely a fair few bad ones, ultimately it's been an alright timesink, even if for the sheer curiosity in what Kodaka wanted as his magnum opus.

There's some hearsay about potential extra/DLC routes, which I'm glad about if so; if Kodaka's able to talk about wanting to do that, rather than the "gotta pay our loans and not go under first" talk from around launch, that probably means the game's doing pretty well.

It felt like a decent read, and I can respect the idea of a two-sided route where, despite them being different loops, one side is created by the other's existence. The issue there is that, if you don't read the zombie side first, you will have no fucking idea what's going on in the killer side, and character actions will make absolutely no sense until they're spelled out to you all the way at day 100. Even if you do read the zombie side first and understand why some things are happening the way they are in the killer side, it's still not an enjoyable read.

Her voiceacting is pretty good, yeah, and there's definitely a few shit ones you can compare to. I really can't give less of a shit if the VA is trans; if you're doing a good job at what you get paid for, and aren't shoving your personal agenda in while doing so, you're good in my book. It's fair to remember how rare that seems to be in those communities.

If anything the 100 endings makes me less want to play the game. The studio getting into debt over it only makes it even worse and if the game has a sequel hook, it would never be resolved.

Really shows you how important tard wranglers are to the game industry.

Pretty good game. You don't have to finish everything if you don't want to. The prologue alone justifies the price imo. And I don't get the claims about this just being a VN with no real gameplay. There's a bunch of gameplay here. A lot of it depends on your choices though after beating the prologue though. It's all about the journey rather than the destination here.

So did the game saved the company?
The Steam Peak Players number places it far above any Danganronpa, Zero Escape or Somnium Files game. But on the other hand, the first 2 Danganronpas and Zero Escape titles only released on Steam long after their original release on other consoles, so it's not a fair comparison there. Still completely overshadowed V3, ZTD and the Somnium games.

All in all, I'd wager it's been the most successful title of either of these devs, but whether it was also similarly profitable... dunno man. It was much longer than the other titles, so it must have also been more expensive... Only time will tell.
Probably more profitable than the Somnium and Zero Escape games, those are fully voiced and skimping on that saves a pretty penny.
