lazy, shitty, barely put together dragnet scam operations out of an indian call center were omnipresent for like 10 years and peaked during covid before puttering out.

Fun story with that, they haven't puttered out.

What's happened is the tsunami of VOIP traffic that scam call Indians generate on the voice network is getting checked by T-Mobile and ATT entry switches. AT&T was trying to fight this traffic by putting pressure on the tandem carriers (these are big VOIP carriers like West who are also multiple CLECs). T-Mobile decided to do traffic analysis on their switches instead and put the CLECs that originate the majority of scam calls on a hotlist, so that any burst of dialing coming from a hotlisted CLEC dumps straight to carrier voicemail rather than try to connect through.

This has been honed and refined, and some of the smaller end-user handset CLECs have joined in.

This means most landlines, corporate VOIP and discount mobile carriers are still exposed to shitty, scammy Indians. For the people doing software-based blocking, the Indians are also paying to swap their DIDs, they are paying for cellphone farms who receive test calls to see if the software-blockers have identified their DIDs as hot. Once they do, they run bots to complain to the software companies that the DID is legit, then dump the number and exchange it for another DID.

Corporate VOIP gets around this problem by just putting every DID behind a phone tree. If you present the caller with a phone tree, an Indian scammer is not going to fool with the menu. 99% of the time the Indian who is calling has their own phone tree. That's the robot voice recording you hear when Indian scammers call, and they want you to answer test questions or DTMF 1.

As soon as you dump AT&T or T-Mobile as your voice carrier, your % of Indians calling you is going to go way the fuck up, since those two carriers have whole project teams dedicated to doing nothing but trying to get rid of Indians.

when i switched from t-mobile prepaid to mint a few years ago i got significantly less indian spam callers.

Also, the business i work at constantly gets calls that are spearphishing for small businesses, i'm certain they're scam calls. it's all "hi im with (company with vague name i have never heard of) can i speak to a manager" and they're articulate and professional but most definitely not an american, then they aggresively start trying to sell something like new roofing, new windows, plumbing, etc. It's a rented unit in a strip mall, none of those things are even the business owner's responsibility so it's just bizarre to have to constantly turn them down. They're too nice for me to be mean to them because they actually could be legit but i'm certain they're just trying to squeeze info out of gullible old people
