Intro:
KOF XV is a sequel to popular King Of Fighters franchise that takes place after the terrible KOF XIV. It was teased in EVO2019, aimed to be released at mid 2020.
Pre-reveal events:
SNK kept their rock solid radio silence till December 2020. Community was begging for some information and KOF XV started to become the Cyberpunk of fighting games. Eventually, they uploaded a teaser of their new designs of their popular characters.
It was announced to use Unreal Engine 4 for better graphics and gameplay, to be played on Xbox, PS4/PS5, Steam and Epic Games Store. After this teaser, they promised their first trailer for January 2021, which they delayed because of Covid-19 outbreak in Japan. After fan outrage they uploaded the trailer a day after.
KOF XV in 2021:
Weekly they revealed one of their characters on Twitter and YouTube, but in spring they extended the reveal schedule to 2 weeks. They showcased very popular characters such as Terry Bogard, Iori Yagami and Kyo Kusanagi while they introduced new characters along with newcomers from KOF XIV. They also brought back Yashiro, Shermie and Chris from KOF 97. This kept going for an entire year. For a 3v3 team-based fighting game, SNK showcased their characters 1 by 1, unlike how they did it with KOF XIV and their team reveals.
It added new mechanics such as super cancels from LV1 to LV2 and LV3 in order thanks to MAX gauge tweaks, along with a new CD attack that has armor and can stun an enemy. KOF XV also balanced EX moves to use half of the power-bar instead of 1 bar. SNK decided to keep 1 button autocombos which made executions easier for a combo heavy game.
As a respect to their excellent music, KOF XV has a new jukebox system containing all of their soundtracks from previous games. This of course, heavily affected the file size of the game. (Currently is heavier than Tekken 7.)
There were 2 Open Beta console exclusive releases which didn't satisfy FGC players on PC. This still didn't stop players to leak important information from the game, such as OST, unrevealed DLC cast and intro. SNK tried to take these down but it was shared way too quick to stop.
It will be released on February 14th 2022 for 60 USD.
Comparison:
Major complaints about KOF XIV were mostly about graphics that resembled PS2 visuals. Sound design was found weak, new characters were uninteresting and weird and SNK ditched lot of veteran characters from it's Neo Geo glory days. Visuals were mediocre because SNK programmers didn't use any of the modern engines. They updated their shaders and light-source in time but the difference wasn't too impactful for the game health.
Most of popular voice actors called quits. along with new J-pop influenced character designs, the characters were almost unidentifiable. KOF XV tried to fix this and brought back previous designs with better visuals.
KOF XV promised roll-back netcode as KOF XIV stuck with delay-based, which negatively affected stable connection and provided pretty bad experience. Ranked games were non-existent and casual games were pretty rare. The game eventually died after releasing DLC characters and costumes. It died in 2 years after release: https://steamcharts.com/app/571260
XIV has offered 50 characters on launch and 8 more characters as DLCs, most of those included veteran characters from previous KOF games. 58 characters till discontinued.
KOF XV has promised 39 characters in core game and immediately announced a Character Pass for 2022. It'll include popular characters such as Geese Howard and Rock Howard from Garou/Fatal Fury franchise.
KOF XV also ditched a lot of many veteran characters such as Kim Kaphwan, Daimon, Kensou, Chang, Choi, Chin, Mature and Vice. Fans were expecting long time characters that didn't see the light of 3D games, such as American Sports Team, Saisyu Kusanagi, Shingo, Igniz and Goenitz. SNK stated to bring back Kim as a DLC later on.
Conclusion:
While the game isn't out yet, I think it's clear to say that this game is overhyped way too much and will underdeliver it's expectations for long time fans. I've been playing KOF games since 2008 and I can surely say SNK has lost passion for their games after KOF XIII. It was such a high budget product and SNK never brought a solid game afterwards. KOF XIV, SNK Heroines, SamSho2019, all flopped. KOF98 is very popular on Fightcade and KOF02UM has received roll-back and lobby updates as QoL improvements.
Current SNK is cocksucking Tencent and it'll eventually suck Saudi Arabian Prince.
