Here's a WIP of where I'm at, It's very likely that I'll be continuing my track record of being late but shit's a little hectic on my end. Really hoping to squeeze in more painting time this weekend. Sharp-eyed Kiwis may notice a hint in the top of the photo at what TTRPG I'm taking inspiration from.
Title: Not so itsy bitsy spider
Medium: Digital
Challenge Name: "Palette lockdown".
Choices: 15, 16
Description: A lone spell casting kiwi runs into an arachnophobic's nightmare.
I wanted to spend more time on this but I ended putting all of my time into my metal piece. If I don't post it now I'll miss the deadline lol. I wanted to stay true to the challenge and use only the colors provided, including not using any black. It was difficult but a lot of fun.
Time Spent: about an hour and a half. I kept changing up what I used the pallet on
Art Specific Critique: go for it, light
Permission For User Edits: yes
Title: Colorful ghoul
Medium: Aluminum wire, 12 gauge. Acrylic paint. 23 inches in height, 17 1/2 inches in width
Challenge Name: "Palette lockdown".
Choices: 7,8
Description: a floating ghoul head that doesn't seem to want to go away.
Time Spent: about 5 hours. 1 hour wrapping, 4 hours painting. Closer to 6 with prep. I tried to use minimal editing so that the colors would look correct. Unfortunately I couldn't get the darkest green to not look black. IRL it's much closer to the challenge.
Metal isn't the easiest thing to paint. In order to give it the best chance of sticking there's some prep I have to do beforehand.
Whenever I make something like this I have to lightly hand sand the entire piece. This will help make the metal more porous. The grit should be between 200 and 400. Anything below 200 is too rough, anything above 400 will start to polish the metal. Then I spray the whole thing down with either a white or black primer. White is better when working with dark colors, black is better for lighter colors.
When applying the paint, the goal is to completely get the primer covered. It usually takes a minimum of 3 coats, but the more paint there is the brighter colors on the final product are. It's annoying but the back should have a minimum of a one coat. This helps prevent lines of primer showing through on edges.
I haven't done this step yet, but I'll finish up by coating it in a protective spray. If I want to really make sure no paint chips I'll use modge podge and then spray a gloss coating over it.

Title: Two Faced Beetle Medium: Ibis Paint X with sub Challenge Name: Palette lockdown Choices: 6 - Sundering Sunspots, 9 - Giant Beetle Description: A made up beetle with two faces and toxic drool, it started out being based on the Kuwagata beetle, but I got bored with just that so I came up with my own design. I HATED the palette I got, I wished so badly to get 5, but alas, spirit of the challenge. I am still extremely busy with other art stuff, so I didn't have the time to make it all pretty; it's readable in grayscale, and that's what matters to me. I adjusted the tone curve at the end a little, so the colours might seem a bit off... I'll upload the unedited version if asked. Time Spent: 2 hours and 38 minutes, I couldn't come up with any pose cool enough. Art Specific Critique: Yeah, sure. Permission For User Edits: Sure. Challenge Feedback: I really wish I wasn't so busy because this... THIS is a challenge. It has a theme, it has the element of randomness, and there's a very specific skill you're learning to use here, using colour palettes in this case. And though I hated my palette, I was very pleased to see that it was well put together when turned into grayscale. I was starting to think these weeks were just random little illustrations to fit a theme, but this truly did feel like not only a challenge, but a tool to learn. Moar, pls!
I'm gonna deliver this one even later than usual, probably only by the end of next week or so. I have too much work right now but I don't want to rush this challenge like I did the previous one. See, I fucking love creature design, it's my favorite type of art (I even designed a creature in the card challenge ), so I definitely want to take my time with this one.
My rolls were 16 and 7, which would be a mimic with the Odds 'n' Ends palette, but I'm not wasting the creature design challenge on a chest, so I switched the numbers around and got a spider with the Industrial Brandish palette, which funnily enough is similar to the previous palette.
The background is supposed to be a cave, I'm not too happy with it, so it will probably be redone.
So, I've procured some hardware. World is to become marginally worse off that. But that's after I fugure out how everything works. Because I have no idea what I'm doing I can't find whatever is called "blending brush", I don't understand why nothing is smooth, etc., so I did not use any particular color schemes sugested. Sorry, camarad OP. However, I did roll a d20 for a monster.
Title: "spoider" Medium: Krita Challenge Name: "Palette lockdown". Choices: 16 - Spider Description: Dungeoneering was never good. It got even worse when you found yourself face to face with famous gay spider from hell, starring in popular web-series for mentally-ill teenage girls "Fuck fuck shit bitch fuck shit bitch fuck fuck cunt bitch shit shit fuck bitch shit why is hell full of gays and furries and where's Hitler shit fuck bitch bitch fuck shit fuck bitch wanker cunt bitch shit piss fuck". At least hauling two liters of Jarate all the way down here just in case doesn't seem like a wasted effort now. Loot might be right behind that door, so be your aim true. Time Spent: I don't have a definitive answer. Spent a lot of time figuring what buttons do and what am I doing. Didn't quite figured that out, so you might say I'm still in the process. Art Specific Critique: would be quite welcome, as long as there'd be more than "yo shit suks". I kinda figured that out on my own. Permission For User Edits: Be my guest. Notes: don't forget to write a note
The dimensional merge is upon us! Or rather is approaching, rather expeditiously might I add. With the Sonichu medallions still in circulation, their chaos that follows seems to curse anyone in their possession. Does the medal make the man, or the chicken before the eggs, what matter is its out there, coming to a home near you!
Apologies for my poor Chris-Chan impression, this challenge focuses on his rather peculiar but infamous Sonichu medallion. For the uninitiated, Christian Weston Chandler is a self-proclaimed "digital goddess" who has created numerous medallions, most of which do nothing but some think the originals have some kind of negative forces that turn people into retards or gay or something.
Create a custom medallion for either your favorite lolcow, or the cow that maybe brought you to the farms initially. You can either draw one or literally craft one out of clay (for those who are into pottery) which would be fairly messy, do what's most convenient for you. An example would be a balldo medallion for Rekieta, A zannyberry medallion for Ralph, or maybe you have a cool idea for just a cursed medallion in general. Include with it a couple sentences in your submission description that shares the type of curse that would beset the wearer, preferably that matches a habit or proclivity of the lolcow you've chosen. You will make them now, now! Now! NOW! NOW!!!
I posted an alternate beside the challenge cause I didn't like how the traditional one turned out.
This medallion is the Baited medallion, and it curses the person's speech to forever gaslight or provoke unnecessary responses from anyone who can hear you within a certain distance. "Oh, you think it's a nice day outside? What's so nice about it? Kind of a subjective opinion you have there despite acting like it's an objective fact". The effect would persist even if you take it off, your words will forever be irresistible to the human ear.
I have to make a confession, my explanation for "proper" thumbnailing in the last challenge was half retarded. Manually resizing the image to be smaller to appear like thumbnailing doesn't solve the problem. I usually export my images in a smaller file size with the assumption that manually resizing wouldn't cause anymore problems, but it does.
I'm still not sure how this feature functions, but I imagine it's doing something to compress the file size otherwise I'll never understand wtf it does. Sorry about the misinformation.
Submission Format Title: Name of your submission Medium: Did you use a pencil, pen, a program. If so what do Challenge Name: KF Medallion Description: Tell everyone what the medallion does with a couple short sentences. Time Spent: Hours? Days? Weeks? Art Specific Critique: Yes/No (If yes, you may include intensity like harsh* or light) Harsh may result in being called a faggot and/or nigger* Permission For User Edits: Yes/No/Please Ask. Other users might have some tips to share about your work that could help you improve. Challenge Feedback: Share your thoughts Future Challenge Suggestion: If you have an idea for an upcoming challenge/theme/genre, feel free to include it
Keep Up The Excellent Work
All of the submissions up to this point have been astounding. There's no rest for the wicked, our struggle continues.
Title: "Tipjar Of Greed". Medium: digital, Paint Tool SAI 2.0. Challenge Name: "KF Medallion". Description: this forbidden artifact awakens a great desire to obsess over someone and give them goods, in order to gain attention of some sort. Originally fabricated in the Vortex by an unknown magician, it made its way onto DarksydePhil's hands, who now uses it to reach the daily goals. Time Spent: some hours. Art Specific Critique: yes, however you want. Permission For User Edits:you can use it.
Description: I was stoked as all Hell for this challenge, big bloody monsters and fantasy are my bread and butter. Gouache is a weird-ass medium because it's like watercolors and oils had a very autistic baby. It's fun though, my technique is to start with light watercolor washes for my base colors and then use the gouache on top. Gouache re-activates when it gets wet, but the watercolor won't.
Time Spent: I actually have no idea, planning and painting took three work sessions. Next project I might actually time myself, I rarely ever pay attention to how long work sessions last.
The finished product!
Materials and dice!
Plans and color swatching!
My dice glow in the dark and that brings me joy.
This guy is on the hefty side for a Kobold, and that's because of a personal bonus challenge I made for myself- I am not a D&D player but I love Hero Quest, so I added a few extra dice rolls to determine this Kobold's Hero Quest stats. He's slow-moving and hard-hitting, but with fairly low defense against attacks.
Stat card!
There is a reptilian monster in Hero Quest called the Fimir and the average Kobold could easily have the same stats, but I wanted to make this guy more unique so I rolled a D6 to determine how many spaces he can move per turn, and did 4 D4 rolls for the rest of his stats.
Hero Quest uses special dice that are basically a D6 but featuring three symbols-the white shield, the black shield, and skull.
He can roll four dice at once to attack, with each skull rolled representing a potential hit to your character. Player characters then roll their defense dice, with each white shield representing a blocked hit. (For enemies defending against player character attacks, they need to roll black shields to defend a hit)
Fucking hate math? Hero Quest only makes you count up to like, 6.
Art Specific Critique: Yes please tear me a new orifice
Permission For User Edits: sure homie
Challenge Feedback: This was a very fun one, like I said in my previous post I'm a sucker for anything that uses dice randomization. Having to work with an assigned palatte is also a fun challenge though I ended up with a color scheme that I actually work with a lot!
I'm new to this thread, but I'd like to improve on my art. So far for this challenge I have this as my WIP. Using a pencil and an old Patcon sketch diary I used to use in my art 1 class. I'm planning on doing a Mickeychu medallion. After about almost 30 minutes this is my WIP start. I've never drawn anything like a medallion so I'm kind of nervous.
Welcome, cast aside the self-doubt, we're all here to learn and improve. You dont have to start with the medallion challenge, if you like something from prior challenges in the catalogue, start with something you'd be more comfortable with.
Yeah about that... I'm just there because I like such activities due to them being a good way for, well, keep myself focused on something I'm losing interest to do despite my passion for drawing.
Title: What The Fuck Is A Kobold? Medium: Procreate plus a canvas texture I found online Challenge Name: Palette Lockdown Description: My best attempt at drawing what I think a kobold is based on answers here and some Google references. Time Spent: 3-4 hours Art Specific Critique: Yes Permission For User Edits: Yes Challenge Feedback: I loved the creativity of combining the theme with dice rolls, but I'm not sure the limited palette was the best for this format. Future Challenge Suggestion: Kiwi Comic Page. Basically the same idea as what created the current background collage for the forum. Optional modifier could be to choose a particular artist's style to emulate.
As a quick aside I wanted to say I am extra impressed with all the Kiwis who are submitting traditional art. Everyone is doing a great job though.
Title: Mickeychu's Medallion of Misery Medium: Traditional. Pencil, colored pencils, and paper. Challenge Name: KF Medallion Description: Mickeychu's Medallion is an unholy, cursed artifact created and worn by the members of the Chu clan. This medallion grants the wearer fame and notoriety beyond their wildest dreams, but at the cost of bestowing the wearer and their family with terrible misfortune. Such as madness, financial loss, and even the loss of loved ones. The current owner and wearer of Mickeychu's medallion is the notorious ogress herself, Tophiachu. Time Spent: About an hour. Art Specific Critique: Yes. Harsh criticism would be preferred. Permission For User Edits: Yes, absolutely. Challenge Feedback: This was really fun to start with! I'm personally not satisfied with how it came out, I think it looks decent at least. I really love the whole cursed lolcow artifacts. It really got me into a dnd mood like I was coming up with cursed loot for players.
Welcome, cast aside the self-doubt, we're all here to learn and improve. You dont have to start with the medallion challenge, if you like something from prior challenges in the catalogue, start with something you'd be more comfortable with.
I appreciate the warm welcome to the thread, unfortunately I didn't see your message until I started working on the drawing early in the morning. Maybe if I have time I'll get around to doing the other challenges. I'm excited to see what challenges you have in store for us next though.
Like I said, I'm lolcow on my own, for myself, and I've got here thanks to one of my Welsh lads, kek.
Anyways here's what I've ended up with.
Title: Tainted painter' medallion Medium: Digital drawing, made in Krita Challenge Name: KF Medallion Description: Among curiousities that you've seen on your journey, something was blickering in the light of hot spring sun. upon investigation you've found a medallion resembling... many things? It's sure as water is wet not a holy object. behind what resemble brush lays shiny pentacle, accompanied with a bunch of jade crystals. You wonder who might've be owner of this little trinket... Time Spent: two hours. If I haven't messing around with brushes could've done it faster. Art Specific Critique: Go on. Permission For User Edits: You're free to go as always.
Challenge Feedback: I have a pleasure doing what I like. This challenge is great.
Future Challenge Suggestion: Makes me wonder if comic related challenge will be organized, like "make a comic cover" one that Null have done few years ago. Was fun.
Title: Silver Balldo Medallion
Medium: Fine silver clay (99% purity after firing), 5.8 grams in weight
Challenge Name: KF Medallion
Description: A token made of fine silver to ward off sex and drug demons. Especially those from the Minnesota region. Legends say if you throw it in a toilet at a special Minneapolis Airport bathroom you might get a wish granted by Larry Craig.
I will include some art sperging for those who are curious about metal clay:
Metal clay is something I came across in highschool. It's made from powderized metal that is mixed with an organic binder. It's body safe, you could theoretically eat some and be okay. It feels and acts exactly like regular clay. A major drawback is that it can be overworked easily. Someone might choose this method over pouring molten silver for a few reasons. A big one is that it's easier to add delicate details than it is on wax.
It comes in every metal type, including gold. As far as I'm aware, they all need to be fired in a kiln except for fine silver. As long as the piece is under 10 grams, it can be fired with a hand torch (creme brulee torch, dab torch, whatever you prefer to call it).
Time Spent: a total of about 6-7 hours over several days. I could spend another 3 polishing it.
Art Specific Critique: Yes, light. I don't have a lot of experience carving clay. I know how to, my hands are shaky. Makes it hard to get details correct.
Permission For User Edits: Yes
Challenge Feedback: Loved it. Great excuse to bust out the silver clay. I forgot to include my thoughts on the last challenge: It was awesome! Better than I expected, bravo. Loved the execution. I saved the color palettes so I can use them on future pieces.
Future Challenge Suggestion: I kind of like the thought of making propaganda posters. Or drawing in a specific artist's style.
I wasn't sure how much room I would end up with so I have lots of details that didn't make it to the final piece. I might revisit this once I have more experience with carving. The spades somehow ended up looking like butt plugs. Thankfully it kind of works lmao.
this is what happens when you stray too far from your original style, Just to emulate an authentic sonichu medallion,
Title: the Linkarachu medallion medium: digital challenge name: KF medallion challenge description: WARNING: adblock may not work if watching YouTube, may cause you to wear lots of brown clothes and a fedora, the urge to be snarky, and a craving for dead gay muppet gangbang porn. time: 15 minutes art critique: this has set my drawing creditials back 100 years feel free to lay into it like linkara does with comics permision to use: granted go right ahead theme: always great taps! Future prompt: asides the haunted paintings nothing new
Medium: Krita Challenge Name:CweekC 6 KF Medallion Description: The pig medallion glows. Trapped in a pill bottle. Looking for it's next victim. Time Spent: 3 hrs. A lot more time was spent thinking about this challenge. Art Specific Critique: Yeah Permission For User Edits: Yes Future Challenge Suggestion: I think something related to anatomy would be fun!
Notes: I realized too late that medallion is more like a coin or piece of metal. If I had known I would've made it a coin or something.
Title: The Shaming Of The Prudes Medium: Procreate Challenge Name: KF Medallion Description: "He who possesses it shall conquer the world, in exchange for his career and family..." My original idea was to recreate the Behelit from Berserk as Rekieta's head, but I remembered a shitpost edit I made months ago and thought it would fit perfectly given Rekieta's current skelly mode. Time Spent: 4+ hours Art Specific Critique: Yes Permission For User Edits: Yes Challenge Feedback: Another great challenge idea, with plenty of ways to interpret it and do your own thing.
