Suga returns on BTS 'MTV Unplugged' special, plus the K-pop stars drop surprise Coldplay cover

Members of BTS teamed up with MTV to treat fans to performances from their latest album "Be" in a special edition of "MTV Unplugged" that aired tonight.

Oh, and smash hit "Dynamite", of course.

"It's really an honor to be a part of the 'MTV Unplugged' legacy, where so many legends have performed," group leader RM said at the top of the 30-minute broadcast. "We're definitely thankful, honored we got to be a part of this."

During its '90s heyday, a string of top musicians including Mariah Carey, Eric Clapton, Nirvana and Shakira graced the MTV Unplugged stage. The show, known for presenting a stripped-down look at musicians and their songs, picked one of the world's most popular groups in BTS, which includes members RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, V, Jimin and Jungkook, and was named Time magazine's 2020 Entertainer of the Year.

One of the most exciting moments for fans, is seeing Suga return to performing. He'd been sidelined after undergoing shoulder surgery last fall. The group's record label, Big Hit Entertainment, said the surgery was needed because it was "a problem that had constantly been a health and wellness issue" for the singer.

"It's been a while since I've been on stage, and I missed it a lot while I was recovering," Suga said. "It feels good to be performing together. I'm very happy."

The 'Unplugged' special hops between slick performances on highly produced sets ("Telepathy" and "Blue & Grey") to more intimate conversations between group members and a surprise cover of Coldplay's "Fix You". (Which, along with the rousing rendition of No. 1 song "Dynamite", put each member's talents front and center.)

The framework for the special is BTS' latest album, "Be," which dropped in November. Many of the tracks were influenced by the pandemic which has prevented the group from touring and connecting with its devoted fanbase in person.

"We miss you ARMY so much," Jungkook said. "We look forward to seeing you again, and until then we will continue to stay by your side this year with good music."

"Blue & Grey" is one of those tracks spawned by the pandemic. Member V, who helped write the song, explains it to viewers: " 'Blue & Grey' is a pop ballad track with charming acoustic guitar sounds. I tried to express my inner sadness and uncertainty so I translated the feeling of burning out as 'blue' and the sadness of not being able see the ARMY as 'grey.' The melody of the song is simple, so I paid closer attention to delivering emotions through the lyrics."

The song expresses despair, with lyrics such as these: "Where is my angel? // Someone come and save me, please // Can you look at me? 'Cause I am blue and grey."

The show wraps on an upbeat note with BTS performing "Dynamite," their first song recorded entirely in English, first to debut at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 and first to earn them a Grammy nomination. The wall of framed record awards in the background underscores why BTS earned its own MTV special.

Did the article not include a link to said performance? That's dumb lol.
P.S. Shoutout to Rap Mongrel.

New Creamcatcher song; shame about Dami's forced shitty rap in every single fucking song.

agree to disagree but i adore dami's rapping, the boca rap really sent that home for me. no hate, we all have our own opinions. dreamcatcher are probably the only group i really enjoy watching live just based on the sole fact that their mics are on, are loud, and they actually fucking sing. i love twice, but holy shit after so many years in the industry i wish they'd actually SING and not just mime.

someone mentioned stayc a while back too and they're very good for rookies, both the songs they released were bops and i'm excited for their future. sieun i like in particular because again, anyone who makes the effort to sing live even with errors here and there is a better performer than those who mime imo.

I fully support SHINee in making music and doing their thing as a group for however long they want to or are able to. That being said, I am not sure I will ever be able to listen to their new stuff without thinking "It's not bad, but it would be better if Jonghyun was on this"

Kpop in 2021 is a mixed bag for me. Basically all the groups that got me into it are now either on the sidelines (Red Velvet, EXO, TWICE is getting there etc) or straight up disbanded. Good songs and releases definitely still happen, but it feels like no group is operating in full on powerhouse mode. Any legendary group today had some 2-3 year span where they just hit home runs nonstop. Even groups that I tend to really like their stuff, agencies are so ADHD re: concept that you can't really trust that any group is going to just deliver every time right now - or if they do, it'll be 1-2x a year. Also, I'm sure the profit calculations would beg to differ, but there are too. many. boy groups. We HAVE to be approaching peak boy group at this point, I just don't understand.

kpop is easy to listen to. i don’t have to think very hard to enjoy most of the music, which is nice.

however every time sm tries to convince their idols that they can rap i think it’s cute that they still try.

all of blackpink’s title tracks sound the same.

I rather listen to Koreans try to rap, instead of black dudes. But I may be biased, because I don’t like rap and really don’t like black people.

know we got Eminem and stuff, but they’re just wiggers.

So which is more likely to happen: Kris Wu gets the death penalty or Seungri spends less than a year in prison?

I can't believe it, Twice actually released a good song, it's been so fucking long.
Lol ikr. IMO everything after Fancy has been pretty meh, save for maybe one or two releases....

In chronological order:

That's a lot of dicking around since 2019. Dark age shit.

The Feels feels like a return to form. Nice callbacks to Cheer Up, What is Love and Yes or Yes in the MV as well. Appeals to longtime fans but idk if it's enough to really establish themselves as a big player in the West a la BTS or BlackPink.

Wished there was more Jeongyeon. Can't help but think that aside from her injury and anxiety, the pressure is on for her to get back down to her old weight :( I can see why it would be easier for them to simply bench Jeongyeon rather than have her stick out like a sore thumb among the other eight (underweight) members.

That being said, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if she walks when the contracts are up.
