The Last of Us Franchise - Because it's apparently a franchise now. This thread has been double-DMCA’d by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

For someone that didn't play the first game, how was it explained why the crazy doctors needed Ellie's brain and not just blood samples?

I know there was apparently a secret document saying they've been butchering people anyway to try to find a cure, and that Ellie might be sacrificing herself for nothing anyway, but I don't know why they needed brain samples in the first place.

You would think having a live host with the immunity would be more beneficial in the long term.
It’s something about how the fungi plant takes over your brain. It formed around her brainstem but it didn’t actually infect her. So they need to extract the brain in order to collect the tissue samples or something.

Some TV Tropers have commentated on the plot:

"I do find it here amusing that the fans Abby killing Joel makes her unlikable whereas Joel dooming the entire human race somehow doesn’t. Oh well, everyone is allowed a little Moral Dissonance."

"Murdering your way through grunts only to go "it's bad to kill the main villain" isn't just cliche, it's one of the most hackneyed writing tropes out there. It devalues the lives Ellie's taken if she only wises up right at the end.

As a matter of fact it's such a bad take I'm doubtful it's true. I jab a lot at Naughty Dog's writing but even they gotta be smarter than that." (Oh you naive soul)

"I just figured the whole point of TLOU and now its sequel was in devaluing the myth of heroic and cathartic violence. Like, you're not Nathan Drake quipping your way over dead bodies, these are real people trying to survive just like you, and while Joel ran afoul of the occasional cannibal pedophile (a decision to kill them being as morally challenging as swatting a fly with a rolled up newspaper) I thought this one was gonna be about "hey what if we completely pulled back the curtain on your murder fantasy?"

" I would have liked Abby to be trans. First trans hero. Then again, would it benefit or hurt representation given the Internet Backdraft?"

"How evil is Abby really other than wanting to kill Joel who is an Asshole Victim?"
As somebody who reads TvTropes for recreation it really sticks in my craw when these motherfuckers turn trope names into part of their vernacular. It's like when internet debaters drop the names of fallacies every other sentence.

I assume the fungus hyjacks your nervous system like irl cordyceps. To get information on why a host is immune you need samples, biopsies, etc. MRIs or other such devices don’t usually get you the really detailed look you’d want for something like this, and biopsying the brain is profoundly unwise; so the general protocol for finding out anything about this kind of thing would be to remove the organs you think might have some sort of abnormality from a corpse, take and sequence DNA, run chemical tests and fix the tissue samples in a block of something like paraffin so that you can slice it and look at the wafers under a microscope to see what’s different.

Has Troy Baker or Laura Bailey said anything yet? I'm curious
Well I know Baker has made some half-hearted and tone deaf attempts to get people to still play the game. Not too sure about Laura Bailey.

I gotta say though, knowing that Bailey was used as the face model for Abby is seriously depressing. This is the same woman who voiced some of my favorite character, gaming or otherwise, and is also really attractive to boot. And now here she is, being the voice and capture model for one of the least likable and most unattractive characters I've seen in recent years. Seriously Bailey, what led you to take this role?

That's what I always wondered. The fungus is transmitted through bodily fluids (Blood specifically, I think?) and the fungus that Ellie's infected with is a specific mutated strain that's asymptomatic which means she's immune to bites and spores. Technically, couldn't she just do a couple blood oaths with people and spread her asymptomatic strain to them? All they'd have to do is take a few blood samples, no need to hack up her brain.

Revengeance was fun to play, though. And the senator armstrong stuff at the end redeems the retarded plot.

I don't doubt that, my point is just that if you're going to say something is the worst AAA game made, then I would imagine you'd point the finger at a game that was broken, incomplete, and/or rushed and on top of that isn't particularly fun at all, i.e. an accurate description of FF15. At least MGS4 didn't have to be patched or have DLC that "explained" parts of the story that should have already been in it (granted MGS4 has too much explanation but at least you didn't have wait or pay additional money for that).

The problem is shes stolen roles from black actresses and now troons. Yes I know. Troons. Its still not a good look especially for someone who is lacking in range.

Note my wording, one of the worst.

I don't know if I would go that far, but the game is flat out dumb (well...not Metal Gear Revegence dumb but still) and has way too many cutscenes. Now FF15, on the other hand....
Revengeance was dumb in a good way, I think. A Suda51 sort of dumb.

Given the amount of shit AAA games out there I don't think it qualifies even remotely close to worst. It's pretty quality compared to shit that's come out in recent years; like Anthem, ME Andromeda, Gears 5, FF15, FF7 Remake, that XCOM spinoff I can't remember the name of, to name just a few.
Still, this is the "Druckman wishes he wrote for TWD" thread, not the "Kojima could've tied up his plot threads more succinctly and with less handwaving" thread.

She's the face model? I thought it was someone else?

To be fair, the former's character model being black wasn't decided upon until after Bailey did all the mocap for her. Nice going Druckmann.

What do you mean by lack of range for that matter?

Agreed, although kojima's entire gaming portfolio post MGS1 could easily be summarized by saying idiot weeaboos applaud deranged asian man masturbating into a cup.
