As someone who loved it, from both a narrative and mechanical point, it was a good departure from the normal kind of games we were used to. Even survival horror for the most part wasn't too survival-y or horror-y. But this one was this bleak emptiness that just kept kicking you while your down. And was written competently. Even the ending fit the story and ark. You never feel like a super powered god. You have low ammo and need to think. No rambo-ing.
I agree that it's executed well it just isn't really my thing. Although I will say there's a huge gap in the writing that doesn't seem to be officially addressed (although I'm familiar with this theory through fans): the Fireflies come off as kind of incompetent, which really helps to justify Joel's decision at the end of the game and turn it away from being "morally ambiguous" which I feel was the intention.
