TLoU became sort of the poster child of where they want gaming to head towards. All this cinematic "gameplay", pretentious messages and fuck the fans attitude is the exact thing they want for the future so of course they will praise the shit out of it. Quality be damned.

Also these critics barely know anything about actual games, in fact, most of them are barely gamers and their skills with gaming are barely above that of a journalist.

In fact, critics and journalists are one of the many things that expose how gaming is now filled with people that dont care for gaming or actively hate it.

the multiplayer on the first game was pretty popular. its obviously waned now over time but it still has some dedicated player base. plus it was the one feature missing from the second game and some people did question if it would be a thing

with marketing the budget mightve been like 300 million probably and it likely still made back it's budget in the end anyway
