- Doggo killing is actually a thing, and is even more brutal than we originally thought; in this instance, watching a doggo and their owner - who didn't do actually do anything besides search the area - just burn alive as their last words are them screaming out in pain at their dog burning alongside them is fucking HORRIFYING.
God that scene fucking hurt. Just make it a quick fucking yelp, dont make it a prolonged suffering. Jesus christ, I'd stop killing dogs altogether and just avoid them at all costs.

Also, its fucking weird how long it takes for dying enemies to actually die. We get it, killing people is brutal, stop reminding me every 5 fucking seconds but plaguing me with audio of dying people checking on their own blood.

Makes me appreciate what Raven did with Soldier Of Fortune. It was a cheese fest, but they nailed how enemies react to being dismembered and mortally wounded, without any unnecessary junk.

Because their beloved playbox has a serious problem with exclusives. All fingers on your one hand and some on the other are enough to count the most attractive exclusives worthy of attention, not counting the remasters. Most of the overhyped releases came out as either forgettable, disappointments or trash, and let's not forget that Horizon is being ported to PC, something they still can't stitch their assholes over. TLoU 2 from the start was hyped as one of the biggest games to hit PS4, so they prefer to ignore the problems to keep the hype.

Honestly it’s not that Neil is trying to be dark and edgy , it’s the fact that he’s boringly dark and edgy that makes it for me. The violence that Neil is trying to push doesn’t really work because there are games that are much more violent and there’s probably a couple that are more realistic about it then Neil can be, the fungus zombies that the game is supposedly about are less horrifying then the concept art and the “twists” that Neil’s trying to do are all uninspired and have been done much better in other pieces of media. So he’s not only a talentless hack but he’s also a Uninspired Hack at that.

It's not like the "make you do something bad and make you feel bad" thing is unique to Schmuckmann anyway. Some games did it well. e.g. "No Russian." Some did it in heavy handed, obnoxious ways, e.g. the white phosphorus shit in Spec Ops: The Line, where they force you to use white phosphorus and then are all "you monster you killed civilians." Fuck you.

Schmuckmann is well beyond either of those examples in sheer cheesiness where you want to punch him in his greasy face. Somehow promoting killing dogs while their owners wail is even shittier than having you murder a bunch of civilians.
 
When Batman chucks the rottweilers into the abyss in The Dark Knight, I don't freak out. Mostly because A.) The story and characters are so competent that I'm too invested in the upcoming Batman vs. Joker confrontation to care and B.) the movie isn't jacking off to the idea of the dogs dying horrifically.

I didn't even realized he might have killed the dogs.

I forgot ma'm abby existed since the bitch only showed up in a wobbing ONE trailer back in 2018. Than again people thought she was ellie's mom before it went all IT'S MA'M on us.

That and if attention is paid it can be seen that there are unarmed people in that pit, which ruins the horrifying surprise with the civilians. Ignoring that fuck up, from the perspective of the story that scene is made well, but as an attempt to make you feel bad it's just bullshit thanks to the noticeable cracks.

I liked the WP part in Spec Ops, it kind of reminded me of Funny Games in the sense they both said something like "these people died for your entertainment, if you didn't watch/play it, they'd still be alive".

Don't envy that person. 207-215 Kings Cross Road appears to be a rented office via a company called "HubbleHQ" that specialises in short-term stuff in bright colours that is the hallmark of the soul-destroying office job. They probably are on a contract only a couple steps above workhouse and have to make a quota of DMCA complaints a day.

Anyhow. Slightly amusing anecdote. I just read John Grisham's new novel Camino Winds. In it, a group of Florida Men and Women are stuck on this island during a hurricane and one of their number, an ex lawyer who writes novels about corporate skulduggery, is murdered at the height of same. The perpetrator is a well built woman who used to be military and who did it with a golf club and is caught because one of the Florida Men noticed blood and brain matter on it. I noticed this and immediately thought that the perpetrator was actually going to say, "IT'S MA'AM" at one point. Though she was called Karen.

(The motive was that the victim was writing a novel about how a shitty care home chain was drugging comatose patients with Chinese research chemicals to extend their vegetative states and thus coin more money from the families and also covering up creepy orderlies raping the patients, if you must know. Quite good. Not as good as Rogue Lawyer which is easily Grisham's best and all kinds of crazy awesome and about the sort of lawyering all us IRL lawyers wish we got up to, but it's not bad.)
 
Neil saw how shocking scenes in the first game worked for the audienece, i.e. Joel's little daughter getting shot by a grunt, Henry blowing his brains out after having to kill his brother turned infected, you name it, so he decided to go even further, thinking that people would like it cus your gut gets punched right in the feels. Problem is that he seemingly does not realize that dark and provocative content needs to be done wisely, especially if the aim is to make you, the player, feel bad about your actions. Do it right, it works. Do it wrong, it fails.
I just had another thought. Part of what makes those moments great and work is we see our characters react to them too. It will create a bizarre disconnect if we start killing dogs and listening to owners cry if we the player are supposed to feel bad about it but Ellie/ Abby continue completely stone faced and not reacting in anyway either during or after the fact or more hilariously if they use it as an opening to attack.

Since the WP moment was brought up in Spec Ops whether or not it its message about the player works depends on the player but at least we see how it affects Walker and his men. We don't have the game trying to make the player feel like a piece of shit while having Walker in his men going "oh well that's a bummer" and move on completely straight faced. It isn't just a moment for the player but it has narrative weight to it too.

I'm not saying Ellie needs to break down crying or anything but even small reactions would help. Have her grimace a little, have her mutter something under her breath, have her pass blame back to the dog or its owner. This is supposed to be a narrative game so tie this mechanic back to the narrative somehow so it at least has a little value.

Honestly dont see why people enjoy these overly glorified TV drama simulators that they put into video games. There are so many other games that are.. you know.. Games? Dragon Age Inquisition is a better alternative. Dorian is gay, not the unlikable type. And its a good game overall. Just saying.

Though the fact that i had to mention sexuality at all here, makes it go more to simp meter. So i probably will avoid it next time :)

I don't know how to answer that. I mean the reason why journos likes to compare hard games to dark souls is because during the last generation most games at that time focused so much on narrative that challenge took a back seat. It's why some games today hold your hands telling you what to press.
