The Last of Us Franchise - Because it's apparently a franchise now. This thread has been double-DMCA’d by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

So far. Seems some people legit hate it
But i am curious if normies suckered into the game
Normies will probably get suckered in but I wonder if it'll be for long.

Referring back to the UK sales figures a few pages ago, this exact situation happened in the PS2 era with Atari.
They released 2 unfinished stinkers, "Enter the Matrix" and "Driver 3" (Driver 3 infamously having payola'd several magazines for good review scores).

Enter the Matrix sold well on the licence alone but come Driver 3, the sales figures started strong but took a nosedive when everyone realized how crap it was and it basically killed the franchise.

The same thing happened with Mass Effect 3. It sold gangbusters despite being utter poo but then when Andromeda came along nobody fell for it.

"Fool me once" seems to be how these things go in the gaming industry.

A somewhat good thing that comes out of this mess is that TLOU1 had closure and didn't end on a cliffhanger so I wasn't expecting or needing a sequel and didn't get hyped. I do remember however in 2013-14 that people wanted a spinoff game telling the tale of Ish though, which could have been nice. He was an unmet npc but you went inside his safehouse in Pittsburgh and read several messages he wrote. It's probably a good thing that spinoff wasn't made, considering the quality of TLOU2's writing and the part where Ish is a white man, at least according to a kid's drawing.

I’m not going to pretend like I’m a fan of his (though I probably like him better than most people here), but the second half of the video in which he brings up contemporary reviews of Heavy Rain is spot on. And what he says about games journalists desperately trying to validate their position of games being high art also applies to gamers doing the same thing. So many people trying to convince the world that certain games are masterpieces because they are not fun.
Might aswell flog themself 100 times a day, post picture on facebook. And call it art if thats how they view it XD.

Video games is about playing a game, playing chess is not friggin art, its to play a game. How hard of a concept is it for some people haha

So as I said I did play it. Honestly, didn't hate like the first 18 or so hours.

I'm one of those sad austists that really likes the naughty dog way of making a game, so gameplay wise everything was good for me. I like adventuring around in abandoned cities and digging through the trash of the old world and I've actually spent a lot of time in Seattle so it was nice to see it all destroyed, give it another couple years of crazy leftism and we can go play the Last of Us part 2 exploration in real life. Yay.

Some of the flashback scenes with Joel were pretty good, like him and Ellie's dynamic is still the best part of this game series and of course they just par 5'd that right into oblivion. GG cuckmann. The first half where you play as Ellie works well enough with her doggedly hunting down the members of Abby's party who wronged her, torturing one to death in the basement of hospital was pretty good. Killing the support base of the weird love triangle and eventually admitting that yeah, we gotta get the fuck outta here with Dina being preggers and out of leads only for Abby to show up and kill Jesse unceremoniously and wound our boy, Tommy. This part of the game was fine, it should have ended here with a boss battle as you playing as Ellie and killing Abby in a fight but it doesn't, no.

Instead we go to where the game falls apart; after watching all the shit Abs McManshoulders has done to the characters we, the player give a shit about we go and play as her. This segment tries to humanize some of the rando's you end up killing but sadly I don't care. A: I still want them to die because to the player, me, they're still the bad guys who cracked my surrogate daddy's head open with a club. We also go deep into just how much of a fucking retard Butch Manjaw is, she almost immediately disobeys the orders of her faction to go help a friend who shot one of their own. We then go on a 10 fucking hour sidequest to help some dumbass transboy and his sister. I think the devs were trying to set up a Joel/Ellie dynamic with Abby and Translife boy but it doesn't work because you already hate one half of this pairing and the other is a dipshit who constantly makes stupid choices.

Abby then proceeds to betray her faction to get stuff for transboy's sister to amputate her arm. During this segment you callously kill members of transboy's former faction and while he's okay killing the shit out of them he gets mad when Abby calls them names. Like the fuck, dude. At some point during this one of Abby's friends fuck her, cheating on their pregnant girlfriend, couldn't remember when it happens but it does and even by my own degerate standards, I hated it. After this 10 hour sidequest is complete you save transboy's sister's life by having your friend chop her arm off. Transboy then goes back to his crazy cult home to try and convince their mother to join them, an action even the legendarily retarded Abby says is stupid and won't work. We then go to save transboy from his own retardation and find he's killed his own mom. His sister then dies like a retard and the leader of Abby's faction is then killed by the sister in her dying act. Abby then proceeds to just, kill anyone who isn't her or transboy. Coldly slaughtering people not even a few days prior had been friends and allies.

-This is our new hero, wow -

Then the boss battle against Ellie happens and we all know how that goes. I purposefully failed like, twenty times to find all the ways Ellie can kill Bolt Vanderhuge. My fav is still the shotgun to the chest.

The ending has us play a bit as Ellie, broken and jumpy from having her face smashed by Thud Meatcrunch and living with Dina, she decides to go for revenge again because that went so well last time. Translife Boy and Mort Manchest have gone to California because, even in the post apocalypse world that shit hole still attracts the gender weirdos like flies to fucking shit. They get captured by some gang that Ellie then fights her way through to the ending scene we've all watched by now. Like the fuck.

Overall it started strong, Joel's death was stupid and the creative decisions taken have probably murdered the franchise because the best thing going for it was those characters and the ones they wanted to replace them with are just awful. I got paid $4 to take this off the store's hands and honestly, as negative as I am about the game as a whole, I can always just play the first half and have an okay game.

I'd say it definitely seems like Druckmann got out of hand and I'm sure when they started having outsiders play test it they must've gotten more red flags than a parade in North Korea but they still pushed it out anyway. There are flashes of good and even brilliance but it's all buried under a fucking mess, kinda like if your sewer backed up into an art studio, sure there's still some really good things in there, but does anyone want to wade through that to get them?

This does not surprise me. I am beginning to think that the first game was good in spite of, not because of, Neil Druckmann. There, he had people who were actually competent writers and designers to keep a lid on his sperging out.

Andromeda had the same problem. And we know that 90% of Andromeda basically was binned eighteen months before release and they blitzed the rest.

That seems to be symptomatic of this sort of game development. There are remnants of the actually good ideas buried within but mostly it's the face-diarrhoea of wokesters and expectation subverters. The Last Jedi had that problem as well. The whole Canto Bight incident felt like a remnant from a previous draft of the film, and Rose Tico felt like someone they just slapped in there to enable them to reuse it. I bet originally Canto Bight was Finn and possibly Rey cornered by bad guys and having to do a chase through the casino but since Rey was mastering the Force all on her own on a remote island they couldn't do that, and Poe Dameron was meant to have died in the first film. And the script needs the plot to happen and they've already shelled out for all the aliens and creatures and CGI, they need to use it.

Even the niche indie channel I follow is making fun of it.

Somewhat related, is this the AI the Sonyggers are praising? Because that barely looks a step beyond the original Deus Ex's AI.

Nah, Aris enabled all the "Accessbiliy options" in that clip. There's an option where the AI lose sight of you when you go prone. It's basically a built in cheat mode for the handicapped.

Word is that Canto Bight was supposed to be Finn and Poe, but Rian was too inept to write them both without making them sound the same.

I just got to a scene where some dude shot a horse in the head and it just dropped dead instantly. Maybe I'm fucking stupid but isn't it much harder than that to kill such a large animal? Like no doubt it'd die eventually but just an instant death? I don't think so.

In WW1 they'd use something close to .32S&W on the forehead, so I guess just aim right?

I think the biggest thing that helped the first game was that it had a tight narrative and told one story in the least amount of time it could. The characters were better and more grounded but there were also fewer of them so they each got a greater narrative focus. The cast in the second game is too bloated and too many of the characters are too weak to carry the narrative they're being asked to.

In the first game Joel and Ellie are doing all the heavy lifting but the supporting cast is good as well but also again, small. There's less than 15 named characters in the entire first game. You have Sarah, Joel, Tommy, Tess, Robert, Marleen, Ellie, Bill, Sam, Henry, Maria, David and Jimmy. The rest are just nameless goons you kill.

The second game is juggling so many characters and narrative threads it gets lost and fucks itself to death. You have Abby's revenge plot which is resolved when she goes all PGA tour on Joel. Then you have Ellie's revenge. You have the romantic subplot with her and Dina. You have Dina's pregnancy and the fact she's not telling Jesse about it. You have Jesse who just wants to help his friends. You have Tommy off on his own adventure and Ellie trying to find him to join forces in Seattle. You have Abby, Owen and Mel in a love triangle. You have Abby betraying everyone. You have Owen wanting to leave the WLF to go find Fireflies. You have the war between the WLF and the Scars. You have Transboy betraying the scars by being trans and then killing a bunch of them. You have transboy's sister's arm needing to be chopped off. You have Abby deciding to even help these two for what seems to be no reason, she says it's because they saved her life but the first person you saw do that she had no problem torturing them to death so it seems hollow. You have transboy trying to convince his super religious mom. You have Abby and sister trying to save him, and getting the middle of a war to do so. Then you have Abby finding out that Ellie killed her friends and going for revenge. And then you have Abby and transboy taking Owen's goals to find fireflies then you have Ellie's final revenge plot.

Writing that out really shows how much of a mess this game was for its narrative.

Oh wow, I forgot all about Ish, I need to replay the original game.

Last of Us did indeed tell a complete story and there wasn't a need for more.
