The Legend of Heroes Series - Possibly The Most Underrated JRPG Series

Ys isn't related to Trails outside of being made by the same company.

Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 are not on the switch and there are no existing plans to bring them over since they're published by XSeed and not NISA. Trails 3 is the first switch game for the series which is going to make it a weird jumping on point for the unfamiliar.

I was just thinking obviously ps4 1 and 2 but 3 on switch because free dlc? Unless that's incorrect

The PS4 had the free DLC as well. I dunno if the swimsuit DLC is still free but usually for the launch window they always offer some sort of free DLC.

The PS4 still has Juna's Lloyd Bannings costume still up and others.

Just beat chapter 1 of the first game. I actually think the voice acting is pretty good from everyone (Laura's a bit stiff tho)
It's fun so far. Kinda dumb that it only focused on the guys tho...

Laura is a precious sword autist and you better take her out on ALL THE DATES.

Finally, I was wondering how to fucking play this series. Someone should do a writeup of the tails series.

Legend of heroes Pre-Trails are all their own thing they're entirely unrelated and don't even get referenced. the US had three of these games come to the PSP. They're all entirely different from a gameplay perspective.

Modern legend of heroes starts with Trails in the Sky and goes to Second Chapter and Third (SC and 3 have no physical copies in the US, TITS only has a physical copy on the PSP). These set up the background. And yes I mean background because there's places mentioned in these games that we still have not gone to yet or properly explored (i.e. Calvard).

The Next games after the Trails in the Sky trilogy is Trails of Azure/Trails of the Blue Duology. These have not been officially released in english yet so their names could change. They're only playable in english from fan translations. Characters from here start to cross over at the end of Trails of Cold Steel 2's epilogue chapter. They make more major appearances in Trails of cold Steel 3 and 4.

Trails of cold Steel is currently a quadrilogy. 4 huge ass games that follow Rean the main character. The first two games don't references any of the previous ones outside of 2's epilogue chapter where it's like a Thanos type build up reveal. TOCS 1 and 2 follow Rean's class 7 from freshmen to graduation, TOCS 3 is post-grad where everyone now has to deal with real life and jobs and Rean is now an instructor teaching his own class(these are the new party members replacing the old class 7 from the past two games) and a huge war breaks out. 4 covers the war escalating to a currently unknown conclusion.

The world building is sprawling which is why there's a two volume encyclopedia

I should tell you though the books were written before NISA got the franchise. X-Seed's translations for the Character Names were rather literal and rough and it's what they gave to Udon who published the books. For example the last name name Orland is changed to Orlando in TOCS3. You find a few discrepancies like that.

I am going to soon marathon the entire series on PC as I going to have more free time.

dude it's like 1,000 hours if you're going to complete each game. 150 to 200 hours some installments can take since the final bosses on nightmare are fucking whores of retardedly high stats. They pretty much force you to be max level 200. Each game in itself is a marathon between all the journal entries, all the enemies you need to scan, the side quests. TOCS2 also has two whole playthroughs required because it opens up more scenes that are absent in the first play-through including an extra boss that's only possible to fight the second time around.

Does this series "start" with Dragon Slayer?
Does it "start" with Romancia? Faxanadu? The PC Engine games?

I'll stick to playing each game once. You need a guide to get everything but if you pay attention and take your time you'll get most things.

This is less the case with Cold Steel.

Once you pull out the guide you really hurt the experience.

All those previous games are not the popular ones people tend to care about.

The games people care about start with Trails in the Sky.

With CS4 on the horizon.

I think NISA did a serviceable job on CS3. While it had some problems early on, it was FAR better than Ys 8.

I absolutely hate they only dubbed what they had to instead of taking that extra effort like the CS remakes did. That said I find myself wondering if I'd rather have no VA work on a scene if it's only half voiced.

I was thinking of romancing Emma. I heard she and Laura are the best candidates especially for the bonuses you get.

Oh hey we have a thread for this series. I just finished Cold Steel 1 as my first game, took me about 80 something hours and was a great time. Combat is better then I thought, but it felt like a game of solitaire once I learned how to spam Jusis' noble command and delay every boss that can be delayed into hell. I eventually threw Machias' burst drive into the mix and the last bosses where delay spam works never had their first turn. I'd consider combat above average, its fun but it is far too easy though from what I've gathered cold steel overall is just easy.

The story though is something else though what a great ending. I'm not super sold on some characters, Emma due to spoiler reasons I wanted to choke by the end of the first game, she has a lot to answer for in the sequel, overall though I'm into most the main cast even ones with minor importance like Gaius because the dude is just so chill. I'm picking up the sequel eventually but after I play that I want to know what happened in Sky to make Olivier do what he does in Cold Steel since supposedly he felt compelled to do all his actions in cold steel due to his involvement in the events of the Sky arc.

Which bonuses? The link bonuses? I found that those aren't super game changing in my experience the 5th one in particular didn't feel very impactful for how long it takes to get it. Also you can easily get multiple rank 5 links (I almost got 3 when I used most my bonding events on Towa) if you use your bonding points on them enough. So pick whichever girl you like. I didn't use Emma much and I never used Laura outside the first chapter because I found that I liked Fie and Gaius more due to Fie's speed and Gaius making craft spam super easy and he had better aoes in the early stages. Jusis is the real mvp though once he gets his 3rd craft (usually in chapter 3) which is an insanely strong buff that chapters with and without him feel like night and day.

My main school house team was Rean, Alisa, Jusis, Fie/Machias/future party member with 2 pistols depending on where I was in the game as Machias for example goes from meh to crazy when he gets his last craft while Fie is good much earlier. Fie with Rean's default master quartz Force is really stupid with her S craft, make sure to use it for chapter 2.

I personally romanced Towa because I felt sorry for her and felt she paired really well with Rean constantly working himself to death alongside helping her student council duties.

Not a bad choice, she becomes patricians choice as the games go on.

They just seem to go together, I get that Falcom tries to force ship Alisa here and there but they don't go quite as well to me. Alisa is pretty good and all as a character, as far as I've played, but I don't think she's good girlfriend material for Rean.

Rean being kind of a person who overworks yet undermines himself in the same breath pairs well with Towa who does mostly the same thing, it is like they're so similar that they can cancel the other out.
