The Linux Thread - The Autist's OS of Choice

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Is there a possibility of having DWM autostart neovim opened to a certain file on startup? I know I can use a shell script:
Bash:
nvim ~/path/to/file/file.md
But if this is put in the .xinitrc it will just be in the background. Any way to have this be opened in an ST instance?
Code:
st -e nvim ~/path/to/file/file.md
oughtta do it

At least with Android, you can run a firmware like LineageOS without Gapps. Not many people are going to, but that's what I do (90% of what I care about is in F-Droid. I pull in a tiny amount of stuff from Auora store). Android without Google services is nice and can add up to an extra day of battery life. I use DavX5 for calendar/contact sync to a CalDav/CardDav server I host. But I realize I'm in the 1% here. I realize GrapheneOS tries to cater to a larger audience, but most people aren't going to remove the bloat off a phone when they get it like people did back in the Windows 95 days. It does suck there isn't just one installer and ARM devices are incredibly difficult to make general purposes install images for.

I might have gone with lineage instead. Though there are some benefits to graphene. I think the security might be the best with graphene, and there are some really great features. The main thing I don't like is because of the strong security it limits the freedom you have to do whatever you want with it.

It's still much better than android, you can easily avoid any Google stuff if you choose. Or you can use the sandboxed Google play, and even install Google stuff to a different user, and separate it from the Google-free stuff.

Now I'm definitely not going to switch over to lineage though at least while I still have this phone. Mostly because of how much work it would be transferring all my stuff over to a new os. In the future I'm open to giving it a shot though.

Question for anyone using Mint 22: I'm curious if there is any program that allows moving desktop backgrounds (akin to Wallpaper Engine since that piece of shit doesn't work with Proton) available for Linux. Apparently, the one that is reliable requires KDE and thus, a new OS. Any ideas?
There's paperview. I don't know what the reliable one is (also I'm assuming X11). Tried to figure out a way to do this on my machine without installing too much shit, this seems to also work:
Bash:
## Install xwininfo and mpv
ID=$(xwininfo -root | grep id | head -1 | cut -d " " -f 4)
## ID should be a hex number, feed it to mpv
mpv --no-osc --no-osd-bar --quiet --wid="$ID" -loop myanim.gif

Xwininfo gives you the id of the top level root window that has no name to refer to, though its output kinda sucks and grep pulls multiple lines. Trim that with head & cut and you get what you need. It worked OK when I launched it mid-usage, I don't know whether it would work like you'd expect on startup. Compositors may possibly fuck with it too, but I don't use those.

Windows support will in most cases tell you to just reinstall Windows once you break it by breathing on it wrong, so being fixable doesn't matter
true, but the moment you propose that the inevitable reply is "what about my programs?" - and if you're smart and done that rodeo before, you know it also affects a fuckload of logins since most people save it and let the browser autofill it.

so even if you install all those programs again (fun fact, windows store apps can be permanently removed even when downloaded before, unless it was a paid version, and even then I wouldn't bet on it) you'll get the inevitably call later about "where's my password?", which means you either have to guide them through the recovery process, or in case of fucking microsoft accounts, good luck and it's probably gone (since MS recovery is completely automated, if you don't have enough info you won't get your account back, simple as).

non-fixable wouldn't be an issue if a new installation wouldn't be as tedious and annoying, if not more so.

I have a script that does similar for xfce and uses:
xprop -root XFCE_DESKTOP_WINDOW | cut -d ' ' -f 5
So similar may work. Check the "xprop -root" output and see what makes sense there.

It's a pretty huge website and he's downplaying how Facebook has been crushing smaller sites for years.
Yep, I liked how he did't gargle the corpo balls but seemed to go against them to defend what is best for the consumer, didn't watch his israel stuff. Now sucking up to facebook, very clearly just because zuckerberg kneeled to his favourite orange man, made me loose any respect I built up for him. What made him anti-estabilishment was he had different political views from the estabilishment, now hes gonna be the governments pet, probably. I hope not, but it seems that he is going that way.

How does one not feel safe on a fucking website? Just turn the computer off, retard.
Just post the tweet:

Imagine if Linux had some sort of foundation that could invest in hosting these different projects...
I would give them the benefit of the doubt, and assume they weren't stupid enough to not to suggest them. But... I dunno. I'm surprised they don't ask Memehat too.

The Debian Publicity Team will no longer post on X/Twitter. We took this decision since we feel X doesn't reflect Debian shared values as stated in our social contract, code of conduct and diversity statement. X evolved into a place where people we care about don't feel safe. You are very much invited to follow us on https://bits.debian.org , on https://micronews.debian.org/ , or any media as listed on https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Publicity/otherSN #debian

This seems to be where the discussion about Debian ceasing to post to Xitter took place:

This is the Debian publicity team mailing list archive. Start at Jan 22. There is a bunch of faggotry (Musk threw a Nazi salute!), and a few dissenting voices.

The decision was posted in a message dated Jan 29:

The author of the post (but not necessarily the decision maker) is Anupa Ann Joseph, depicted here:

From one of the linked socials:
I am Anupa Ann Joseph from India. I have completed post graduation in Applied Electronics Engineering. Worked for a digital publishing company using FOSS. I like to contribute my time promoting Free Software, advocating for Digital Privacy and put effort to bring more diversity in Debian and other Free Software communities.
I was introduced to Free Software and Debian community at my previous work place, International Centre for Free and Open Source Software, which is an institution under Government of Kerala to promote Free and Open Source Software. The project was to create awareness about Free Software among women in technical institutions across Kerala, and the first stage was helping them learn more about Computers and Operating Systems. Debian was chosen for its stability and the opportunity it provided to learn. Members from Debian India community supported us in this mission, which led me to participate in Debutsav Kochi 2018, where I met more Debian community members from India. I started participating more in the Debian Community for DebConf 20, where I was part of the team organizing the Malayalam track, t-shirt team in India and the video team. Later, I volunteered for Debian publicity team during MiniDebConf Online Gaming Edition. I was one of the main coordinators for the multi-lingual MiniDebConf India 2021.
The last event I could volunteer for Debian was DebConf 21, in which I helped to run the Indic track. This year, I want to give Debian packaging a try and also volunteer for upcoming Debian events to spread the Debian philosophy.

The Debian team, does not feel safe on Twitter.

The poor faggots. Truly sad they aren't getting constant affirmation anymore.

Fine, many other distros using Debian as a base will continue to provide for a wide array of use cases without ever acknowledging this -- assuming Devuan, Linux Mint Debian Edition, Q4, Sparky, etc. keep their nose out of the shit pile.
