skylake's hardware decoder maxes out at 24 fps for 4k video and for h265 also doesn't properly support most hvec coded videos that are around, (only 8 bit in Linux) Biggest improvement of Kabylake was full hardware fixed function support for HVEC 4k@60fps at 10 bit.

the videos are 1080p but the computer is connected to a 2k display so that can have an effect. it does seem to run fine under Windows but it's smoother with the server's Quadra doing transcoding. But it's good to know that a 7th gen CPU would be sufficient as it means we don't need to get a more expensive replacement. It would be nice to get an OPS module pc that can be slotted into the tv but all the cheap ones are like 2nd gen.
Would something like one of these work, assuming a target of 8gb ram and 128gb storage whenever there's multiple options?

Then it's probably the scaling that does the computer in. I love my fanless Kabylake Thinkpad Convertible, but the GPU is not exactly a powerhouse. This hasn't anything to with the decoder really, though. Sounds a bit odd that it wouldn't manage, I would make sure if 3D acceleration is working in whatever you use or if it works in general. Try glxinfo | grep rendering it should say direct rendering: Yes. If it doesn't, then 3D acceleration isn't working and the CPU does everything. If it does, then your linux media player might not use it. Then while you're at it, check the output of vainfo if hardware video decoding is even supported on your system. You might have to install both programs.

Not sure about these Chinese wonderboxes(and the second link doesn't work). You might consider a used Thinclient. They're not only cheaper usually but the build quality is much better. Businesses get rid of them en masse for various reasons all the time. Granted, later gen ones might be more expensive and harder to find.

I've just installed Ubuntu and I'm playing around with linux for the first time. I've found it a lot faster and more response than Kikerosoft windows and less invasive. Using the terminal to install things is a little strange at first but makes me feel like a hackfag which is a bonus.

VLC, Qbit and steam work without issues and I'm suprised by how many games will run on Linux. The last time I heard anyone talking of Linux IRL, they were saying how only a few games worked. Has that changed?
Anyway, installing Linux has revived my old shitty laptop from 2011 which was crushed under the bloat of Windows 10 and is now my primary torrent machine that I use to watch Jewtube.

Currently installing Red Alert 2 Yuris Revenge using Snap and Wine (or something). Hopefully all goes well.

Is there anything I should know about becoming super-autistic, like any bonuses of linux or hidden gems on here?

hmmm.... Updating is as painless as it gets and will make you regret ever changing back to windows if you ever do.

For starters, you probably don't want to stick with plain Ubuntu for too long, since it's been on a downward trajectory for some years now. Mint is usually regarded as a nicer distro that's still based on Ubuntu.

That and Linux Mint isn't chasing all of the new and shiny things in one release (like wayland protocols), and maybe every third release or so they change something you can notice at first glance with the default setup. Only recently did they implement the show-desktop shortcut on the far right on the panel, for instance.

You can thank Lord Gaben for that one. Valve plus a couple of notable autists have done the work of making a translation layer from DirectX to Vulkan called Proton. This is the same translation layer that makes the Steam Deck work. The search function on ProtonDB is where you'll want to check compatibility for your games.

It was actually some other autists that made DXVK, the DirectX to Vulkan layer you are talking about. Proton is a gaming fork of WINE which incorporates DXVK, and came out a bit after DXVK finally broke ground and was actually working. I was watching the development of DXVK in the moment and it was awesome seeing it go from rendering a triangle to being able to run Triple-A titles. D9VK went through that same process before finally being merged with DXVK. Quite an experience being a gaming Linux user of the time. The times I ran Steam in WINE still hold a special place in me.

In my case, yes, this was a linguistic oversight and that's on me.
My comments refer to data being corrupted by pulling out drives before unmounting first.
Some people seem to think Linux users preach the OS as being the perfect solution.
It's far from it and I've been using it for 20+ years and can honestly say I have come across very few who would try and make such a claim of it being perfect.
Linux is just source code like any other software, and there is no such thing as perfect.
More specifically staying on topic, do I think Linux could 'do better' with how it handles mount/unmount and data corruption?
Yes, absolutely.
I honestly wish I didn't have to think about unmounting drives at all.

Never understood why people think lutris is the go to for gaming on linux, you see it a lot with guides for the steam deck even though its almost always a much more complicated solution than just using proton.
I've only used lutris for the few games nested far enough into launchers that you actually need a script to set everything up easily like hearthstone (only example i actually use)
Normal wine is still my most used for games since im a bit of a wine purist and that mostly comes down to the fact that the way proton handles prefixes is a crime against humanity.

It's probably just burned in habit at this point more than anything else that has people still recommending Lutris. I've only ever had it work with 2 games, both were as standalone as you can get and even then it still required a bit of messing with configs to have it actually behave properly and not shit itself after the PC was restarted.

Or... Just use Steam or even Wine directly with each game it's own prefix if you want to go the extra mile. Or you can actually create a VM with QEMU+KVM+GPU passthrough and use Windows as a gaming OS.

On a serious note, running Windows in KVM prison (enjoy) is a bit better than running it on real hardware. Do note that a big caveat of VMs is that kernel rootkit spyware *ahem* "anticheat" will detect VMs and refuse to let you play the games.
