That already puts you head and shoulders above the average computer user nowadays, congratulations, which was my point earlier. The average user has no want to figure things out, they just want the damned thing to work, and if it doesn't work, again on average, they don't really bother checking online, they either chunk it for a new one (the Apple way, but not unique to Apple mind you) or they take it to a computer guy to make it work. For each install of Linux there are a myriad of pseudo unique problems that have few and far between overlap, and as evidenced in this thread and when it comes to Linux as a whole, everyone has shit to do, they don't really have time to hold people's hands and walk them through fixing their problems. Some do, and that's great. Could they afford to be less curmudgeonly about it? Absolutely, but far be it from me to tell people how to carry themselves.

The average user has no want to figure things out
I strongly believe this type of "average user" should just leave the x86 space, Windows or Linux, whatever, this hardware platform as a whole, and move to Mac or get an Android phone with a USB-C dock with how now Android is going to have a desktop mode. Everything just works, they don't have to thing, they are locked into the most niggerlicious ecosystem known to man, and they should stay there as that's where they belong.

Back on the topic of Linux and not some longhouse shit:

I added my main desktop gaming rig to my k8s cluster (network is hardwired in the house so no need to rack it) and it's been a couple more weeks of this experiment. No noticing any slowdowns or issues on the desktop. It's a good way to efficiently use up the household compute. Setup a command that spins down some heavy work loads when I fire up a steam game, only tweak I've needed to make. It gets shit in the ops world, but microk8s is easy and a good place to start unless you have unique needs.

It got me thinking though, tossing the gaming rig in the server rack and going fully thin client in the house. Gaming over sunshine is almost 100% there, I'm sure someone's shoved it into a container (and if not, I'm sure I could).

I know k8s and containers bother some, it's more abstraction layers to learn but back in the day with beuwolf clusters you needed to parralize your code to use the compute (different use cases but still). It blows my mind how easy it is to cluster these days

Nigger point to me where I was asking for help with Linux. Unless you assume anyone criticizing Linux's status quo is asking for IT help, in which case lol
The gaslighting, arrogant assholes that are driven by emotions and ideologies first, then pragmatism and software second. The worst kind of people you could be dealing with as an IT guy.
If you don't need help, why would you be dealing with IT guys or fearing how they would treat you? "IT nazis might be here."

That's what I've been telling you to do, yes. Go to whatever ecosystem wants to cater to your needs.

Linux fanatics are not IT guys, fundamentally. An IT guy will be pragmatic and call a spade a spade, a Linux fanatic will gaslight and do mental gymnastics because ideology is more important to him than the software.
I said that a Linux person is not an IT person. One is driven by ideology and other is driven by pragmatism. An IT person can be a Linux person but a Linux person cannot be an IT person. Like I said before, there are IT people that know Linux and work on Linux, but don't delude themselves into using Linux on desktops if they can tell from first-hand experience they suffer with desktop Linux more than they do with Windows/Mac so they choose the right tool for the job. A Linux person will insist that he has to use Linux on everything and act like everything other than Linux is inferior.

Going back to the whole "it's always the user's fault" of this conversation. What is the difference between a distro maintainer pushing a faulty update that breaks something, and Microsoft pushing a faulty update that breaks something? As in, what's so different that only with Linux it's the fault of the user who updated if something broke? Occam's razor will cut through every argument and come to the conclusion that what's different about Linux is that it's not Windows, which is a non-sequitur. It doesn't matter if it's an unpaid volunteer or a vibe coding jeet, the source of the problem is not the end user.

It's rough out there. Best of luck.
Thank you so much.
The IT market is dead. So is the hobby, as is evident by this flame war where people prefer to argue and bicker more than anything else. Get a trade job. Electrician, HVAC technician, forklift operator.
My last (and only) IT job was for $18 an hour with some React (🤢🤮) coding thrown in. Also in freshman year of high school. My tech ed teacher personally met with me and my parents because I did perfect on the electricity test and recommended I become an engineer.
Boy I wish I listened to him.
I'm having better luck in the computer programmer market than in the IT job market. I hate Indians and the H-1B visa so much more now.

It's even worse now that everyone is hellbent on replacing everything and everyone with AI and it's all a race to the bottom full of fake job offers or some of the worst job offers known to man that expect you to work for free. Not that other markets didn't get fucked like that but IT got fucked the hardest.

I don't think linux is generally superior (people who think like me are typically more BSD inclined anyways), and I've agreed with you at every turn that if it doesn't meet your needs you should use something else. But I'm willing to call helpless net loss users a helpless net loss, and this (very pragmatic!) observation can only be interpreted as "ideology" by the Church of Market Share.

If you're not extracting value from helpless users in some other way, there's no reason to cater to them. People who do provide value become disgruntled when free riders receive better representation than them by virtue of being a larger (but useless) audience. Trannies may call this fanatical gaslighting, but to me it's merely acknowledging the ups and downs of a free market. If catering to retards was free or net positive I'd love to do it, that's the dream of communism but it's just not true.

Microsoft or Apple don't try and gaslight the user into believing that they're at fault, they admit that there's an issue and try to fix it.

Mr. "You are holding it wrong",, "Butterfly switch keyboards aren't faulty", "You need entire mobo replaced for that tiny issue, which is more expensive than new macbook, so just go buy new one" Apple does not try to gaslight anyone?

Microsoft changing setting during updates, and doing weird shenanigans with payment plans aren't gaslighting anyone?
Windows is in free fall since 11. Teams fucking sucks, with weird ass random bugs like history not loading, audio not being detected etc.
And all they did was paint over it with new UX which is almost the same as old one.

Not to mention that Microsoft have stolen my legally bought copy of Minecraft. Fuck that shit man.
Some autist telling you to git gud on linux forum is nothing compared to this.

Also my mom has been running linux for over a decade now, first Ubuntu now Mint. And I think she is more representative of average user over Windows power-users who just want to shit work the same way in Linux like it does in Windows cuz that's what they are familiar with.

Not exactly individual/average user issues I'm aware, but the chokehold Microsoft have over the vast majority of large scale environment cloud and on prem enterprise identity management solutions is a complete shambles imo, particularly as azure outages have been more common over the last 6 or so months which has been a real pain when trying to actually do/view anything in Entra ID as it kills your visibility, and AD is a menace to properly keep secure these days when you're dealing with the average threat landscape a lot of enterprise clients face

I'm holding out for a more feasible linux/FOSS solution which would act as a true replacement, and allow no AD/Entra involvement in the (probably distant) future as Samba can be a bit painful depending on your environment and Keycloak needs a lot of work out the box before it can be set up in a POC, but that'll require a decent amount of investment from a large number of corporate clients pouring funding into it, who already won't want to give it the time of day unless they already heavily prefer to run FOSS/OSS over proprietary solutions and are willing to drop the dosh on something that will remain experimental for a while. They'll also need to invest in a dedicated FTE (or a few) to actually manage and maintain it in the first place, so that's admittedly a bit :optimistic: on my end tbh. There's a few solutions using multiple tools which work for smaller businesses but when you get to large scale, 1000+ workstation environments it turns into a different story, feels bad

Linux developers design hardware? I can't remember the last time Apple gaslit their users over software bugs in macOS. Probably because they just do their job, take in the bug reports and fix them when it's clear that their devs caused them and they have to fix it. The hardware side of Apple's business is a completely different story.
Microsoft changing setting during updates, and doing weird shenanigans with payment plans aren't gaslighting anyone?
In this particular case, the gaslighting is supposed to mean telling the user that they're at fault for a software bug caused by the developer. None of these are an example of that. You have extrapolated into the entire scope of companies that are composed of multiple vastly differing subdivisions, while I was focusing on two specific teams by mentioning these two corporations: the Windows development team and the macOS development team. And how they conduct themselves when it comes to software bugs caused by them. I get it that by using Linux you have to hate big corporations, but at least know what you're fighting against instead of applying these broad generalizations.
Windows is in free fall since 11.
Yet instead of going "it's the user's fault that Win11 is a piece of shit", they did the bare minimum of acknowledging they fucked up, doing half-assed attempts at pulling up and keeping an active list of issues they're aware of and are working on. I'm yet to see Windows team pull the same type of shit Linux users do when they blame the user for a fuck-up that without a doubt came from the package devs or distro maintainers.
The mere fact that they admitted they fucked up is impressive even if the improvements are marginal and they still manage to fuck things up in the most intriguing ways possible, given how companies like Nvidia genuinely gaslight their customers into believing that they're wrong about their products. If you want a good example of a smarmy corpo that gaslights their clients, Nvidia.

What is there to elaborate? If you have an update screwing up your system because a package maintainer couldn't be bothered to do his job right, then it's literally not your fault. If you install a distro and it refuses to boot because it misconfigured something, it is not your fault. It's not that hard.
just don't use arch then

Gaming over sunshine is almost 100% there, I'm sure someone's shoved it into a container (and if not, I'm sure I could).

Lizardbyte provide a base to work from. I hadn't thought about running it in a container before now. I've got my gaymin rig in a VM on proxmix these days, so putting a container inside that might be overkill. Almost at the thin client level for everything, as soon as I get my main work computer into another VM. Or maybe I'll just rack it by itself.

I prefer kubes to microk8s, fwiw. Feels lighter somehow.

If you want a good example of a smarmy corpo that gaslights their clients, Nvidia.
Just like in Apple's case, they gaslight their customers about their hardware, not software. Maybe with the exception of HDMI 2.1 on Linux, because I keep reading about how it's now Le Fully Supported, and then I check it out, and it's another Linux Lie, though this time it's coming from NVidia instead of the Linux fandom.
