So I don't get it, is it a sequel or an alternate universe? Since the latter does the usual thing of making every previous event meaningless, and the latter can only end with Neo failing.

That poster legit looks like something the Nostalgia Critic would use in a skit. Neo and Trinity look ... well... regular, but "mom said it's my turn to be"-Morpheus looks just plain silly, that chick with the tyre-skid-mark on her is just about as insignificant as that tumblr chick.

She hasnt done much. Most ppl would know her as Iron Fist's girlfriend, she looked good in that, wonder why they uglied her up with the zoomer haircut in this.
As far as her role in the movie is concerned, just like everything else, we dont know much yet. I have heard some people online theorize that she's the next One, maybe some things in the trailer alluded to that, Im not sure.

Matrix was a very 90s movies with very 90s idea of "cool". I often wonder if it started the "black leathercoat and sunglasses" trend or if it just picked it up and made it popular...
But Matrix was a condensed version of everything awesome about the 90s. Weird poorly understood internet-stuff, shootouts with awesome effects, some edgy design to everything.
It was (at its time) a very distinct movie.
This new Matrix on the other hand? What is 2010s/20s cool? What could it look like? What would the current zeitgeist look like if it was amped up to 11 like the OG Matrix did with the 90s?
Sadly, I think Matrix 4 got it right, going by the posters linked by @Dr. Pasquale. Dangerhair and eyecancer colors. Great.

Blade came out the year before, but the brothers stole it from Hong Kong action movies, especially John Woo movies, which were the hot shit at the time. They made everything leather because they're big gay.
