The Metroid 2 Effect - Is this real or am I insane

Metroid II's a funny case for me in that I really like what it's going for, where you have to descend deeper into the planet as you exterminate all the metroids and eventually you go so far down that the only living things are you and the shrinking number of metroids. That's cool and it reinforces the feeling of isolation that comes with playing Metroid. But for me, the limitations of the Game Boy and the lack of features such as a map really hold it back. Every area looks the same, and it's real easy for me to get lost. And I find much of the music somewhat grating after a while.

I really wanna like it and every now and then I'll give it another shot, but it just hasn't clicked with me.

I feel the same way about the original RE 2 and 3. For the longest time, I always felt like I was in the minority for liking RE2 the best and it felt like everybody else liked RE3 more, but now that the remakes have come out, everyone is saying how great 2 was and how 3 was an inferior sequel.

I've noticed this phenomena of games getting reevaluated too.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is another example, most gamers treated it as an embarrassing disappointment until now it's hailed as a masterpiece because it predicted the future.

Wind Waker is another example too, people didn't like toon Link, now it's considered a classic, it's the same deal with Super Mario Sunshine, it was seen as just a souped up Mario 64, now it's considered a classic, unless it was Metroid Prime or Smash Bros melee the entire GameCube lineup did not get the respect it deserved at the time.
All great examples. MGS2 and Wind Waker I remember quite well from the time, people being so salty on forums because of the former's lack of Snake and the latter's style. But you overlook those things and they're both great games.

Just like how Metroid: Other M will someday be seen. Yes, I'm that guy; the guy who will shit up the thread with the hot take that Other M is a great Metroid game, if you overlook the plot. On pure gameplay it's a lot of fun and demonstrates classic Metroid gameplay elements very well.

On the other hand, the Star Wars prequels were crap, and they are still crap. Same with Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, which I have seen people unironically call the last great Sonic games lol what? They'd have to be Sonic games in the first place to qualify… I was a Sonic fan at the time and bought both at launch (the Dreamcast is still the one and only console I've bought at launch) and was disappointed by them both with their abundance of decidedly non-Sonic-like gameplay (Big the Cat's levels? I gotta catch fish to progress in this game? Bitches be smokin' crack.) You will never convince me otherwise on either of these. (BTW, the last great Sonic games, if you don't count Sonic Mania, were the ones on GBA and DS, which were identifiably Sonic games.)

even before RE2make was a twinkle in anyone's eyes, I've always heard people calling RE2 their favorite and ignoring RE3, mostly because it recycles a lot from RE2. but that's just me

Metroid 2 felt more mission based. In the first one is was "Go everywhere and kill everything. In 2, you had to hunt down a certain number of metroids in each zone.

The gameplay falls apart once you realize that you can dodge enemies by constantly taping the dpad. Plus the inability to use missiles while moving due to the stupid first person mode is dumb.

The guys who made the Megaman Zero series and more recently the Gunvolt games have apparently asked Nintendo multiple times for a crack at it, so maybe one day.
I hope if it ever does get remade, it's fairly faithful to the original. It's a great game as is, could use some more polish though.

Ideally there would be an "Original" and "Arranged/Easy" mode like in the Final Fantasy Origins games.

I personally never heard anyone shit on Samus Returns or AM2R. I only ever heard people say how they expanded upon and fully realised a game that was limited by its hardware.

On an unrelated note, I enjoyed both remakes: AM2R was just as great (if not better) than Super, Zero Mission & Fusion and I liked that Samus Returns took a somewhat different approach to combat than the previous games. I like that you need to choose between your mobility or range of fire, either jumping and running but only being able to fire in a few directions or being able to shoot 360 degrees at the cost of locking yourself in place. It’s also cool that the melee counter offered an alternative to avoiding damage other than just dodging enemy attacks (though, similar to BotW’s Flurry Rush, I wish the timing was a lot tighter or there was some mechanic to prevent you from being able to abuse it.)

Weird, it's the inverse of, "(Popular thing) was never good."

Part of me thinks contrarianism is just a popular thing to do nowadays.
more like boomers vs zoomers. you got a lot of retards these days who just regurgitate whatever epic meme they picked up at some point, over and over in their echo chamber, be it reddit, 4chan or whatever.

personally I never had an issue with metroid 2, but then I never thought metroid 1 was that ultra super classic people consider it to be. super metroid was great, but that was a one and done deal for me, I never really needed "more" metroid, especially since we all know from experience too much of anything makes it inevitably shit. it was nice when it happened and we got a great alongside it, lulzy when not, but most of the time I was playing something else anyway already.

All I know regarding the remake Samus Returns is that the folks on the Metroid subreddit have since become extremely bitter with it, saying that it is too bright and colorful, has too much action and not enough atmosphere, and that the more action-packed finale completely ruins the somber tone of the original's last level. More to the point, anything that isn't a dark Alien-esque experience is seen by them as completely against the core of the series, and that any sort of Japanese element, especially any anime influence, needs to be erased from the franchise, along with portraying Samus as being conventionally attractive or sexy in any manner (they seem to unanimously think that the Nintendo Power Super Metroid comic version of her is the only way she should be shown physically).

It's made me rather frustrated, if you can't already tell.

When Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire came out, everyone was claiming that the originals were their favorite games. I remember people hating those games when they came out, largely for the lack of a day/night cycle (which the previous games had) and the inability to transfer pokémon from previous games (which, again, was a feature in Gold/Silver/Crystal)..
I think that started even before ORAS came out, remember the "hoenn confirmed" meme had been floating around since at least 2011. I believe it is as others described in this thread: gen 3 was the first gen of many players who 12 years later started getting nostalgic
I was stuck playing on emulators back when gen 3 came out and didn't read pokemon forums so it wasn't until a decade later that I read about people being rightfully pissed about the inability to transfer pokemon from previous games (not to mention it was a huge pain in the ass to acquire johto pokemonin gen 3 without the gamecube games), which speaking of fans found ways to do so even before the virtual console release of RBY.
It is funny to look back at GSC and RSE, and see how some of the current complains, such as new and good features not carrying over to the next games go as far back as the third gen, masuda's retarded philosophy did a number on the games.

Hmm, okay, let me throw three to the ringer since everyone is doing and lets see if you guys agree/disagree

Bioshock 2

Arkham Origins

Borderlands Pre-Sequel

Gamers: So you think these games are fun ?

me: Yes and Im tired of pretend they are not.

Bioshock 2 had its flaws, sure, but it was still a touching story with gameplay that surpasses the original's in my opinion. I still love 1 more but I think that calling 2 unworthy is just extremely unfair. Ironically or fittingly, depending on how you look at it, I find Bioshock Infinite preeeetty fucking overrated, the two gun slot shit really annoys me and the whole quantum physics oozes of the "intellectual" crowd that THINKS they know what they are talking about but they are as clueless as you as they hope you assume they know what they are talking about. You are free to disagree, of course.

Arkham Origins was more of City, sure, but Im a huge fan of the Arkham series so I never minded that much. Do I prefer Origins over City? No but I still consider it major part of the series thats worth playing. Feels good playing as a younger, inexperienced and quick to anger Batman. I guess I just dig these type of stories. My only issue was throwing Black Mask under the bus for more Joker when I really think he should have been a sidequest villain at most instead of a major one. Bane was done amazingly in Origins tho, no doubt his best in the series.

Borderlands Pre-sequel bothered giving a new setting with unique rules and Handsome Jack's origin story was surprisingly investing and makes you rethink his character in B2. I could go on but this post is pretty long already. Maybe Borderlands 3 coming out and it being a stinker (plotwise anyway) helped people look back and appreciate the simplistic but decent plot of the pre-sequel.

Besides I fucking love space.

Infinite is overrated trash. But BS2 is the best of the series, minus one too many KOTH segments. BS1 is a putter while BS2 is a driver.
