The NBA Thread

It's been interesting in this past week to see Zion Williamson start to get the Greg Oden comparison. Zion has actually played LESS games than Oden did in the first three years (85-83), and Ja Morant is very quickly becoming a legit superstar 26.5/5.9/6.8.
Not a terrible comparison. But Oden wasn't nearly the scorer Zion has been. Zion has put up 25+ pts a game on >.600 shooting.

I think Zion will end up as a lesser version (since he isn't great on D) of Grant Hill or Yao Ming. Someone who showed dominant flashes but couldn't stay on the court.

I didn't remember Yao's career being that short. But yeah, after his third season, Yao only played 60+ games once in his entire career. And after that season, he only played 5 more games before NBA retirement.

James Harden is officially the latest All-Star to get traded from the Brooklyn Nets to the Philadelphia 76ers

Which means, Ben Simmons and his 3-point shooting skills is coming to the Brooklyn Nets.

Kevin Durant, who initially did not want Kyrie Irving to be traded for Ben, spoke about the trade earlier today:

I think IF Durant is healthy...
and IF Kyrie can play home games (mandates being dropped in lots of blue states lately!)...
and IF Simmons can put up his 8 reb 8 ast 2.5 stl+blk line (don't even need him to score)...

then the Nets can win it all. But so can Golden State, or Phoenix, or Philly, or Milwaukee, or even Memphis. NBA hasn't been this wide open since Jordan first retired in 1993.

NBA has announced that they redesigned the 2022 All-Star MVP trophy in honor of the late Kobe Bryant

According to what the trophy represents, here’s how it was designed:

–The eight-sided base represents the eight decades of NBA All-Star Games and is a nod to Bryant’s No. 8 jersey number. The 18 stars around the trophy represent his 18 All-Star selections. The base height of 2 inches is a nod to Bryant’s 2002 Kia NBA All-Star MVP.

–Level 1 includes 24 stars, representing each All-Star in the game and Bryant’s No. 24 jersey number. The 7-inch height is a nod to Bryant’s 2007 Kia NBA All-Star MVP.

–Level 2 has 10 stars to represent the All-Star Game starters and Bryant’s USA Basketball No. 10 jersey. The 9-inch height is a nod to Bryant’s 2009 Kia NBA All-Star MVP.

–Level 3 has five stars for the unity of an NBA team and Bryant’s five NBA championships. The 11-inch height is a nod to his 2011 Kia NBA All-Star MVP.

–Atop the trophy, a single star represents the star of stars and Bryant winning The Maurice Podoloff Trophy for the 2007-08 Kia NBA MVP. The 2-inch height of the final star represents Bryant’s two Bill Russell Trophies as the NBA Finals MVP (2009-10).

Official highlights from NBA All-Star Weekend 2022 are here:

1) 3-Point Contest

Karl Anthony-Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young and LA Clippers’ Luke Kennard for the award.

2) Skills Challenge

Darius Garland, Jarret Allen and Evan Mobley of the Cleveland Cavaliers beat Team Rooks (Scottie Barnes, Josh Giddey and Cade Cunningham) and all three of Giannis Antetokoumpo’s brothers for the award.

3) Slam Dunk Contest

New York Knicks’ Obi Toppin beat Houston Rockets’ Jalen Green, Orlando Magic’s Cole Anthony and Golden State Warriors’ Juan Toscano-Anderson for the win.

BONUS: NBA Clorox Clutch Challenge

Product placement aside, this took place during the Rising Stars Challenge yesterday:

Eight players were divided into four teams of two and compete to make shots from five locations on the court tied to iconic shots made in the NBA Playoffs. Giddey will be making an appearance in this event.

Teams:

  • Desmond Bane/Tyrese Haliburton
  • Scottie Barnes/Chris Duarte
  • Josh Giddey/Evan Mobley
  • Michael Foster Jr./Fanbo Zeng (G League Ignite)

Towns getting a 29 in the final was fucking nuts. Always been a big fan of him, just something about bigs that can spread the floor. Truly the only great thing added to the game in the last 25 years. Damn shame we could have had that kind of style earlier if Arvydas Sabonis wasn't stuck in the Soviet Union during his prime.

Absolutely hate this Skills Challenge format. Stop fucking with events that are fine in the first place. Either bring back stars in the abysmal dunk contest or replace it altogether with the return of 2ball.

DJ Khaled and friends played their hits during NBA All-Star Weekend.

The last time an entertainer performed at All-Star Weekend was when J. Cole did it back in 2019:

I know that they don't play defense in the All-Star game, but 94-93 at half time is a little TOO ridiculous. You could at least close the distance and feign interest in defense. Dudes are out here taking threes with nobody within 10 feet of them.

The official highlights for last nights NBA All-Star Game are here:

Stephen Curry ended up being this years’ All-Star MVP, while breaking his own three-point record, with a game high of eight three-pointers

Also, due to the NBA celebrating their 75th Anniversary, they even did a special ceremony honoring and inducting the official NBA 75th Anniversary Team:

You know, I am a fair man. As much as I rip on the WNBA players for being spoiled and fucking ungrateful woke lunatics, I can call a spade a spade.

I don't think they DESERVE to have chartered flights because the league doesn't make any profits. At the same time, if some rich billionaire wants to waste his money, let him.

But no. Providing chartered flights for his team is actually a violation of the CBA, and he was fined $500K and threatened to have the team taken away from him.

I'm sure nothing will be made of this PR nightmare, no sir. It's all about "competitive balance."

The WNBA levied a $500,000 fine against the New York Liberty for their repeated use of charter flights over the back end of the season, an issue that has been at its boiling point for the past few years.

It's a league-record number that was reduced from $1 million and included the removal of Liberty executive Oliver Weisberg from the league's executive committee, according to a Sports Illustrated report. The use of charter flights is a competitive advantage since not all franchise owners are deep-pocketed enough to pay. It is a violation of the collective bargaining agreement.

The travel details during the 2021 All-Star break didn't add up for personnel in the WNBA front office. The weekend held in Las Vegas and featured Liberty guard Betnijah Laney in the game and guard Sami Whitcomb in the 3-point shooting contest. Sabrina Ionescu and Reshanda Gray were among the teammates in attendance.

After someone alerted the WNBA to the Liberty’s violations, possible remedies floated by the league’s general counsel, Jamin Dershowitz, ranged from losing “every draft pick you have ever seen” to suspending ownership, even “grounds for termination of the franchise,” according to a Sept. 21, 2021, communication between the league and the Liberty reviewed by SI.

The Liberty are one of the WNBA's eight founding franchises. They are one of three (Sparks, Mercury) still remaining as the league enters its 26th season in 2022. A fourth, the Utah Starzz, is currently the Las Vegas Aces.

WNBA teams fly commercial throughout the season, creating travel conditions that have been an issue for players, coaches and team owners over the years.

Liberty owner Joseph Tsai tweeted about it in October and said he was working with WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert to find a charter sponsor so that every team could fly charter, without impacting owners' varying financial situations. According to Sports Illustrated, he had already presented an "unofficial" proposal on it to the Board of Governors.

On Sept. 13, according to a source familiar with the call, the WNBA Board of Governors considered an unofficial proposal from the Liberty to make charter flights the default travel option for WNBA teams—the Liberty said they’d found a way to get it comped for everyone in the league for three years—but it lacked majority support. Some owners worried that players would get used to it, so there’d be no going back, and others wondered whether players might just prefer a salary hike instead.

Every postseason there is a problem with cross-country travel arrangements that the league has occasionally stepped in to remedy by allowing charter flights.

In 2021, the Chicago Sky dispersed on three different commercial flights beginning at 3:30 a.m. from Connecticut to Chicago for Game 3 of the semifinal playoff series. Liz Cambage, the 6-foot-8 center who signed with the Sparks in free agency, has spoken openly about paying out of her own pocket for a better, larger seat.

At that point, Tsai had also already taken matters into his hands and was flying the Liberty team to games on charter flights. They reportedly used it for each road game of the second half of the season.

The personnel reported it to the league, resulting in a cease and desist from the league's general counsel, Jamin Dershowitz, per SI. Weisberg replied with a note on gender equity (via SI):

"The focus on objecting to better travel arrangements seems to go against the spirit of what the entire League is trying to achieve under the leadership of WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. We cannot begin to talk about gender equity until we solve some pressing issues that have put extra burdens on the health and well-being of WNBA players. In the spirit of improving working conditions for our female athletes, we are of the strong belief that WNBA teams should be permitted to arrange travel that is consistent with the fact that they are professional athletes.”

At that point, it was September and the WNBA reportedly did not want the off-court story to take over the on-court stories. The Liberty pushed back on the $1 million fine that the WNBA told SI was "floated informally but never formally presented" as punishment. Engelbert reportedly said on a Board of Governors call that she "cut a deal with Joe" for a reduced fine.

Am I the only one not totally sold on the Embiid-Harden pairing? It's been like two games and people are saying the 76ers have a legit shot at the title. I've seen the 76ers get bounced out of the 2nd round too often to have any real hope they'll actual go beyond. I'm happy Simmons is gone, but I'm pumping the brakes on the title talk for the Harden-era Sixers until I see enough to know if they are legit or not.

The Lakers now have the same record as the Zionless Pelicans, and in fact the Pelicans have the tiebreaker, so the Lakers are the 10th seed.

The Lakers are only 2.5 games above the 11th seed Spurs. They've looked so bad, there is a chance the Lakers miss the play-in tournament.

For the record, the Lakers are 5 games back of the 8th seed. So without the play-in tournament, the Lakers would almost certainly already be out of the playoffs.

I'm never sure how long between posts I should go before starting a new one as opposed to editing the old one. 2 1/2 days enough?

Anyway, looks like NYC will finally pull its head out of its ass, and Kyrie Irving will make his home debut on Sunday.

People like Howard Stern already crying that they are making "exceptions" for rich people, despite the fact that literally everywhere else in the country except LA has already moved on. But NYC is doing it right by keeping mandates in place apparently. Expect reeeing on ESPN in the next 48 hours about how Kyrie is a terrible person.

New post? I think I'm the only one posting in this thread despite not actually watching any of these games.

So, to update the playoff race, the Lakers have lost 2 more and LeBron tweaked his ankle again. Meanwhile, the Spurs have won 3 in a row and get to play Houston once and Portland twice in their next four games.

The Lakers are only 1 game up of the Spurs for the 10th seed with 8 games left. The Lakers might miss the playoff tournament entirely.

Edit: The Lakers lost on Tuesday. The Spurs hold the tiebreaker meaning that the Lakers are the 11th seed and currently out of the play-in game. Lebron and Davis are expected to sit out Thursday as well against the Jazz.

The Lakers are officially out of the playoffs.

Lots of parity in the Eastern conference. The 2, 3, and 4 seeds all have the same record, and the 10th seed is only 9 games back from the 2 seed.

Remember when it was the Western conference that was deep? That's been flipped.
