It's everything wrong with the NBA rolled into one game. For years people have complained about tanking, noncompetitive games, foulbaiting, and ridiculous pace that deemphasizes all other facets of the game aside from scoring so both teams can have higher box score numbers, and some random fucking scrub breaks the greatest scorer of all time's modern record by flopping and initiating contact on his way to 43FTAs in 30 point blowout against a team who's trying to lose in a game with 20 extra possessions that were generated by his team conceding baskets and intentionally fouling to get the ball back quicker.

To play devil's advocate a bit, Bam got to 70 points mostly because the Wizards suck and were genuinely fouling him rather than any chicanery, and all of these super high scoring games come against bad teams. Spoelstra said that once Bam had 70 in the third, they were like "sure why not see how high he can push it" and that's when the silliness started... but doing that for the entire game was how Wilt got his 100. He was lights out from the free throw line when he was usually like a 50% free throw shooter, his team saw he was on a crazy roll and decided to just feed him as much as possible to see how high he'd get. It was a very silly game, but a silly game every now and then is fine.

Also I dunno how you'd have Kobe as the greatest scorer even if Jordan wasn't in the picture as more or less a direct upgrade tbh

In other news, the NBA is apparently going to vote on whether to expand or not. This would give Vegas a team and give the Supersonics back. If the league is supposedly so concerned about tanking (which I think is overblown) this doesn't really make sense. Everyone knows that expansion teams tank, and they tank even harder than regular bad teams since they're restricted from the top draft picks for a little bit because the other owners were salty about the Magic getting Shaq in their 4th year of existence.

I don't think expanding is a great idea. The league is already two-tiered with a handful of teams being completely uncompetitive every season. This will only water it down further.
The league could shrink in my opinion. So many teams never actually compete and the league won't allow them to have top tier talent via the lottery. So why do they even need to exist? If they really want the Supersonics back in Seattle, just relocate another Western conference team there and have them rebrand. Would Sacramento really miss the Kings? Why does Los Angeles need two basketball teams? Have the Clippers relocate.

Also, can someone explain to me why Vegas is such a hot commodity right now for sports teams? Is the city really doing everything it can to attract professional sports there. I don't think you are ever going to have a reliable fanbase there. It will always be tourists visiting the city. And with tourism struggling in Vegas right now, are you really going to get a decent return?

i thought it was waves of foreign middle eastern investment, i think they are or perhaps now were trying to become an entertainment and tourist hub rather than a camel and oil depot.

Vegas was always prohibited from having teams due to the nefarious affect gambling would have on sports. Now that everything is brought to you by Fanduel the restrictions are off. As to why it's a better fit than teams in Nashville or whatever other city is always in the mix for expansion, I dunno. Event driven city, people always going there to spend money. But I don't know how you develop a hardcore fanbase with a transient population.

The NBA clearly could not give a shit about a core fanbase anymore. People who watch the highlights on Youtube and put bets on are more valuable to them than fans who actually attend home games in person.

There's an interesting vlog about the NBA facing some backlash after the Bulls fired Jaden Ivey.

One youtuber dropped that comment then lots of KF users probably thing of the same thing.

@borednapoleon5296

Im curious, if he was a Muslim and made similar comments, would he still been fired?

Could he not sue for being fired on the basis of his religion?

Nah. He's not being fired for being Christian, he's being fired for creating bad PR for the league and not being good enough to be worth sweeping for (Anthony Edwards). Wrongful termination/hiring discrimination lawsuits on the basis of protected categories basically only happen when you have a massive pattern of behavior or someone fucks up and accidentally says the quiet part out loud. There's also that he's not really fired. A waived player still has the rest of their contract paid out, they're basically just paying you to not show up to work and expressing that they're not gonna renew with you. Add in that the vast majority of the league and league officiants are also Christian... that's not gonna work. These guys have contractual stipulations around not engaging in behavior that makes the team and league look bad anyways, meant to give ownership leverage due to how pro athletes aren't always known for being the best people.

It really is just an issue that he's a bit player so it's not worth the hassle. Anthony Edwards has all the baby mama drama and calls people faggots and he skirts by. There's a bunch of domestic abusers in the league, because for some reason not enough people complain about that to cause the sort of consumer threat that would get them booted. Even Donald Stirling who's been racist for ages and got sued by the United States Federal Government of all people due to racist leasing practices only got booted when he was racist in such a silly way that his team was threatening to refuse to play unless he was outta there. These decisions are made under a thin veneer of morality but it's a profit motive behind them at the end of the day.

Yup, sports league will tolerate borderline criminal behavior if you are good enough. But when you are glorified role player for a mediocre org they will easily cut you to not just deal with the ensuing bullshit.

Shit just look at Karl Malone. The paternity suit from him knocking up a 13-year old was filed in the late 80s. The Jazz absolutely had to have known about it. If he was a bench player he would have been quietly traded or waived before it became a PR nightmare.

(I also find it funny that he teamed up with Kobe and Shaq for his last try at a ring. The all-allegation team I guess.)

Hell people know now and he was still honored at the NBA 75th Anniversary Team and he still appears in events around a league.

Luka Doughcic out for the rest of the season. It's unironically over.

Looks like Nicobros win again kek. Imagine being Luka, lost his team, city, wife, kids, MVP and now his season.

How does Luka get hurt so much despite having the most unathletic game of all time? You would expect him to get hurt at a similar rate to Jokic - basically never. And he is like 5 years younger than Jokic as well.
