If Ron Rivera gets fired mid-season we'll have our answer. If yes, they're fast-tracking it and throwing Howell to the wolves. If no, they're doing the slow version.
Rivera gets fired, replaced with whatever their Jeff Saturday equivalent is, then they hire McVay for the comeback tour.

The 49ers are a case study in how a rebuild can work. Give a good coach job security and let him do what he wants.

At the opposite end, we have the Texan rebuild digging deeper into the basement.

Must have realized they could recreate a running back from free agents and an offensive line
It definitely sucka for a lot of RBs to have their position become a rental, but it's a business. Though I can't say much since the Bears haven't had an offensive line since before I was born.

It sounds counter-productive, but as a RB I would not want to be drafted. Especially if you had a good college career. If I am gonna last about 3 years, I don't want it to be under a Rookie contract. Give me 3, 1 year deals. Those last 2 years might be better off

I've seen people talk about how the 2011 CBA really fucked over RBs. Sam Bradford limited what rookies can make, hurting RBs earning potential in their prime years. They all sign 4 year contracts with a 5th year option, locking them down 5 years. Then they can get tagged twice for an additional 2 years. After 7 years, they wasted their prime years while missing out on larger contracts of other positions and either take backup roles or they are out of the league.

Most RB's prime years are the first 3 in the league. After that they are done. But yeah, getting tied down for 4-5 years on those rookie deals sucks for them. Then adding to the fact they can be franchise tagged for an additional 2 years if they have any good years left really hurts. Especially since that Franchise tag works as the average salary at your position so that number is pretty low.

And no team is going to pay a running back. The last idiot out there who was willing to do that was Jerry and Zeke really fucked the cowboys over with that contract

I think Sean McVay deserves some of this blame too. They gave Gurley a big contract then that season his knees fell apart on their superbowl run. Since then, he's had a large rb back room of nobodies that get close enough production.

I've had some of those post Gurley rbs for fantasy and I think McVay tries to fuck them over so they can't enough production and ask for more money. One of them would be having a good game and for no reason McVay would bench him for the backup for the rest of the game.

Regarding RB's, I think a balance can easily be made. Yeah, they have a shorter shelf life in a passing league. But you don't have to pay them like peasants either. The one year deal with Saquon seems to be a good one.

But on the other hand, RB's need to be more realistic. Austin Ekler and Dalvin Cook are NOT going to get 10 million a year. Sucks? Yeah. But football is a business.

If I were them, I'd go the Marshawn way. Did he get a big contract? Yeah. But he also did commercials for every business in the Seattle area. Hell, he was even a character in a Predator game.

Take what you can get, then market the hell out of yourself elsewhere.

Saquon's Nike deal alone is around $6.25m a year. I'm sure Henry makes a ton off sponsorships and endorsements too.

Marketing the hell out of yourself is probably the way to go. Fans love RBs.

Which makes me wonder why they put so much effort into getting as big an NFL deal as they can instead of just getting on the team and selling themselves in deals like this.

Going on as a packer fan here so might be a better example, but running backs should look at AJ Dillon. That dude just inserted himself in the packer community at every possible spot and is getting endorsement deals because he is loved. That dude doesn't have more than 5 years in his career based on how he plays but he will be beloved and probably get some endorsement deals after he retires/is cut

Professional athletes aren't the smartest people in the world.

Bo knows. Dude blew out his hip and was out of the league faster than most RBs. Nike still paying him like $1m/yr in residuals.

MJ and Shaq didn't get rich off their NBA salaries...

You still do need a competent running game though. Its just not anything you break the bank for. Unless its your O-line but that is something different than paying a RB who is going to be cut in a year
The other option is a dual threat QB who can run from time to time. Speaking of...

Geez Joe, at least wait until the regular season before getting injured this year.

The Seahawks RB room is once again a hospital ward.
Fire Ivan the Terrible, we absolutely should not have half the roster on IR before a single snap of pro football is played.
It's soft tissue injury season.

Back when Chip Kelly coached the Eagles and people made fun of his special smoothies there was a strength and conditioning coach who came out anonymously and basically said that the majority of NFL players let their conditioning go to shit during the off-season. Probably why you see so many injuries as soon as OTAs start. Wish I could find that article again.

A while back, I was unfortunate to be watching a vikings game with a bunch of vikings fans but they told a funny story. One of their kids worked at a local grocery store and said that Randy Moss use to come into the store every week to buy just an entire cart full of junk food. And I can bet he wasn't the only one. Most likely these NFL players have terrible diets but lift weights basically every day and run through practices throughout the week that just burn off everything. So during the offseason, they just keep eating and don't workout enough

I wonder if Taylor is faking his injury to hold out, or if it's him legit not being recovered from the off-season surgery
