As a fan I'd rather build a team first and then try to slot a NEW QB in rather then what the team tried to do with Jones (get the qb first and then fail to build a competent team around him.)
There's no downside to building up the team while there's plenty of risk taking a rookie QB. The Giants don't have a great roster (especially on offense) and taking a QB isn't going to help with that. They had one of the worst o-lines in NFL history last year, and it's not an exaggeration. It crippled the offensive and got multiple QBs knocked out of games. Their WRs aren't anything to write home about either. They haven't had any truly great WRs since Odell left in 2018. Drafting another QB would end the same as Jones, getting beat and injured every year because you have no protection and below average receivers. Plus if the team is built up and a replacement is drafted, then the Giants could compete for a Superbowl with a rookie QB salary.

Rookie QBs (and pretty much every QB) will do well on good teams. They might sound obvious but when teams draft these guys expecting them to be their savior on a crappy roster, they can never live up to the impossible expectations. Mahomes would not have done well if he went to the Bears. Going to Andy Reid, a perennial playoff team and an established QB who will mentor you will do wonders for your development. The Bears could not come close to giving that to Mahomes.

Why they decided to forgo pass rush (something they've been lacking at for almost 10 years) for a complete gamble is beyond me.
Well you see this year's QB class was really good and next year's pass rush class looks really good so they're thinking long term.

Oh except they loaded up on low grade pass rushers and their sixth-round WR wasn't even on anyone's draft boards and could've been taken as a UDFA.

I really have no explanation for what the fuck is going on with their FO.

Schoen is either firmly in the "chuck spaghetti everywhere and see what sticks" mode of being a GM with a hot seat or (what I suspect) the Maras are getting involved in football decisions again.

I hadn't heard about this so I looked it up. Holy smokes, the school is hemorhaging players. It's an exodus. They're losing about 30 and bringing in 8.

I knew Sanders was a nut, but I thought he'd be able to run a COMPETENT football program at the very least. And it's only his 2nd year.

If you're going to be a hardass coach, then you have to at least be WINNING. People tolerate your abrasiveness because it's backed up with success. "Primetime" apparently decided to come in there, be a dick and still not succeed.

Yeah I can't imagine why CU is leaking players. I know I posted in the CFB thread as well, but I can't imagine Saban or Smart doing stuff like this.

Saban was absolutely merciless when it came to booting and replacing players.

The difference of course is that Alabama is a well-run machine where you'll get development as a player. At Colorado your sole purpose is to get Shedeur drafted in the first round.

They also looked at what happened in GB with Jordan Love and in KC with Mahomes and thought "we can do that!" even though both of those came from unique and hard to replicate circumstances. Love was drafted behind 4x (!!!) MVP Rodgers who was consistently throwing for 40+ touchdowns with single digit interceptions. On top of that both of them (Mahomes and Love) had very smart offensively minded coaches who taught them and developed them behind the main starter. Atlanta doesn't have nearly the stability of either of those franchises, nor does it have an offensively minded HC. Why they decided to forgo pass rush (something they've been lacking at for almost 10 years) for a complete gamble is beyond me.
They decided to choke asap this year

It's that time again

The whole Colorado story is exactly what I expected to happen after Deion got hired. There was no doubt in my mind that there would be some dumbfuckery going on when he got there. It was never about coaching young men to be elite players and strong men, it was always about getting him over (which he doesn't need anyway) and to make his son the number 1 overall pick in the draft. So to read this story in the Athletic about the transfer portal and how players were treated is not that surprising.

Nick Saban made some good points in a recent interview with ESPN about the transfer portal, NIL money, and the like. College football has changed drastically over the past 10 years and is slated to change even more in the next 10. A coach like Saban can't survive in the collegiate sport arena now without being able to 100% guarantee whatever their players want. The portal has worked for certain teams to find better talent and gives players another option to explore what they want out of their collegiate career. But you can no longer build a team around tradition, loyalty, and hard work like once before. That is the coach Sanders is trying to portray himself to be. So for Sanders to tell a student coming off injury that he's not gonna be the guy to start and to just leave? Nah, you can't handle shit that way. Don't sugarcoat it, but you can get the point across without being a fucking cockhead.

Sanders had even said last year that they want to treat the transfer portal like free agency in the NFL. Which is what other athletic departments have been doing, though not to the extend of Colorado. But after Sanders left Jackson State to go coach a big school - after however long of acting like the champion of HBCU football - I just knew he'd pull some shit. In today's college football world, should a coach be open and honest to players about their options and potential decisions? Yes. Don't pussyfoot or sugarcoat it if you don't see the potential for a player to make an impactful presence, but don't beat a kid down that's coming off injury who WANTS to prove to you that he's the guy and tell him to fuck off. No wonder Colorado has had a massive exodus: no one wants a coach that acts like a dick and doesn't show up for meetings unless there's cameras to show his ass on Twitter.

I have a feeling we're going to end up seeing major changes in the next year or two with the transfer portal. There should definitely be a portal for players who want to achieve more academically and athletically, but there's going to come a point where a team loses players constantly and can't make a competitive team.

Holy Overpay for Jared Goff. as a Lions guy that's too much.
Im going to hold off judgement on the price tag until I see how much Dallas pays Dak.

Its not going to matter anyways when they bring the Lombardi trophy home to Ford Field. The Fords could give him ownership of the River Rouge plant and I wouldn't give a shit so long as they win the superbowl

I bet if Brock Purdy or Jordan Love got the same contract no one would bat an eye.

Goff has proven himself to be the guy for Detroit. Personally, I wouldn't have given him the extension until next off season to make sure last year wasn't just dumb luck, but Goff has gotten a second wind at the right time. If he can get Detroit back to the playoffs, be repeat conference champions, and a Superbowl appearance, then the extension is perfect.

Detroit Lions management don't even understand how waging players even work. Is the management too nice to Baker and Goff?
I trust Brad Holmes, just by looking at the contracts he's given out this year its evident he has a plan. Hes not just handing out blank checks to make players stay. Sewell, St. Brown, and now Goff are locked up for the next 4-5 years. The next major core contributor up for a contract will be Hutch in '26, so basically this team has 3 years to win a superbowl. And thats not even taking into account the next 3 years of drafting.

I think sticking to 3-5 year increments is smart because the natural cycle of a college football team is about that length. So theoretically you could time the replacement of your key players with when you believe the crop of players at any one given position will be elite.

Additionally, Brad Holmes and Dan Campbells contracts run through the 2027 season, right when most of the core of this team comes up for free agency. So we'll see how the next 3 years goes and then I'll decide on the quality of this contract.

At least Goff has made a SB and brought the Lions to a conference title game, wtf has Dak done in Dallas?

I'm personally not holding my breath on it, though optimistically, I might give Holmes, Campbells and maybe Goff a chance

Same thing with Lamar really, like what has he actually done for the Ravens when it matters? Mahomes is the only QB that actually deserved that gigantic fucking contract. And on that note I hope he breaks his leg on the first play of Game 1.

Harrison Butker gave the 2024 Commencement Speech at Benedictine College.

Twitter was in an uproar over his comments. Upon further investigation, it was equal parts heartwarming and based as fuck.

Someone in this thread mentioned going to a Christian event where Butker spoke to their group and he was equally based in-person.

10/10, would watch again.

Also, as long as Butker remains on the Chiefs, I’m cool with them winning again.
