I really like how they handled references in the older seasons.

Stuff like this is really tasteful. A nice, tongue in cheek parody that pays respects to the source material. Here's another perfect example:

In the new seasons, they just slap the pop culture references in directly with no taste. Shit like this.

I once heard someone say "You can't parody something you don't love" and I think that's really true. When NuSimpsons parodies something it's done out of obligation. Whereas when the old Simpsons referenced something it was out of a source of admiration.

And it's a great parody too because you don't have to know or watch the original King Kong to enjoy the parody, but I think it helps.

a reference is fine, but you need to still have jokes in your jokes
